Inside this Issue:

Thank you for allowing me to serve and extend OUR reach!

Since the end of July 2015, I have been a reserve chaplain in the United States Air Force.

You have understood and supported my service and been though#ul and caring for my

family when I’m away, especially during those long training absences in 2016 and 2017.

Now, having returned from my two week annual tour to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland,

I want to again thank you for allowing me to serve and understanding when my ministry

is out of the area, serving Airmen and families in the Washington DC area. So, you may

ask, what does a reserve chaplain do on an annual tour? During my annual tour this year

I: Preached at the tradi2onal and community worship services; prayed an invoca2on for

an agency star2ng at the Defense Health Headquarters in Falls Church, VA; spent an

evening of fellowship with families enjoying games and Chinese food; gave a devo2on for

security forces (law enforcement) members during roll call before their shi:; watched

computer based trainings; answered my annual health ques2onnaire; performed my

physical fitness test; and I conducted four counseling sessions with airmen who walked in

hope and impart it to these Airmen. God gave me those precious moments to tes2fy to

my faith. In each of these counseling sessions I found a way to reference my faith, even

On This Rock

We aend a beau/ful church

on the corner of Broad and Main

For all that God has given us,

We certainly can not complain.

We appear to be so prominent.

Could a beer place be found?

This seems to be a pres/gious spot

located in the middle of town.

So what really is important and

what message should we present

Should we boast about our building

or never make one comment?

In old Luray my fellow friends,

We’ve built on the solid rock

Remembering Jesus Christ Our Lord

is where we’ve put our stock.

Our forefathers built with faith

and the people didn’t have to search

Let’s build like Peter taught us

“On This Rock” we will build our Church.

Walton Gordon

Read Mahew 16: 17-18

I interpret this scripture:

Jesus wants us to be the rock

because of our belief.

The name Peter means rock. Do you qualify?

Thank you all so much for your cards, kind words,

thoughts & prayers for myself & our family on the loss

of my father. It is a difficult /me, however, we have the

most fond & loving memories to heal our hearts.

Sincerely,

Carla & the Chamberlain-Ondish Family

Spiritual Formation

Be still and know that I AM God, Psalm 46:10

One of my favorite words describing spiritual formation is jour-ney. I find it ironic that the longest, deepest and most challeng-ing journey of my life calls me to be still, and beyond that, to just be. Inward, solitary and nebulous with regard to an exact process, this experience guides my attention to silence accompa-nied by an inward ear tuned to unfamiliar channels. The goal of this journey is transformation rooted in relationship with (in contrast to knowledge about) God as Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. As a pilgrim whose natural proclivity favors more easily grasped facts and actions I find transformation of my heart through the spiritual practices of silence and listening to be two (among other) channels to this elusive, can’t-be-borrowed, bought or taught outcome. Our relationships in the Sisterhood of Grace become deeper and more fruitful as transformation comes to individual hearts through courageous and intentional sole journeys of the soul. One approach to developing this spiritual discipline is the prac-tice of Lectio Divina, (LEX -ee-oh dih-VEE-nuh), Latin for “divine or sacred reading.” My first experience with this prac-tice occurred in a Companions in Christ setting.* Lectio Divina includes four movements of internalizing scripture: lectio - slow reading of scripture; meditatio pondering the words; oratorio - prayer as dialogue with oneself and with God about the scrip-ture; and contemplatio - practicing the presence of God or being.

A Lectio Divina Exercise: Choose several verses of a favorite scripture. You might begin by singing John Bell’s Be Still and Know found in The Faith We Sing, 2057. Sing this short setting numerous times to settle into this time of discernment. Read the passage slowly, fir st silently and then aloud. Read the passage again and listen for a word or phrase that speaks to you. Re-Read the passage and pay attention to your feelings or emotions. Pray and give to God the words and emo-tions that have come to mind. Rest in God’s care, be in God’s presence, and listen. Enjoy the opportunity to relax in God’s presence. This is not a test! Write about your experience in a journal. Give thanks for this quiet time with God and consider a response that reflects your gratitude. Additional information about Lectio Divina is found in the CIC Participant’s Book, Foundational 28 week session, pp. 91-92. Laura Douglass, Spiritual Growth Coordinator

News from Russia:

Pastor Irina reports they have purchased the new house

in Novatroitskaya which will be used to develop a new

United Methodist Church there, used to minister to the

Roma popula2on in this village, used for a:er school help

and used as a gathering place. The house is quite large

(see Picture 2), it has several good-sized rooms (see Pic-

ture 1), a separate garage, what is called a Summer Room

between the house and garage (see Picture 3), and a large

undeveloped lot (see Picture 4). This house is quite typi-

cal of the homes you see in Russian villages. (If you are

curious, the pipe you see running above the wall in Pic-

ture 2 is the natural gas line that provides gas for hea2ng,

domes2c hot water and cooking.)

Members from a United Methodist church in Tulsa, Okla-

homa are traveling to Russia this summer to help con-

struct a fence around the back yard. Irina was able to buy

this home using grants funds she received from German

United Methodist Youth who are engaged in helping the

Roma people in both Russia and Belarus. Irina is planning

to replace the windows and interior doors, update the

kitchen and bathroom and do some pain2ng. The pic-

tures she sent (see Pictures 5 and 6) show several volun-

teers scraping off the exis2ng wallpaper and preparing for

other renova2on work. The people working in these pic-

tures are Roma to whom Irina’s church has been minister-

ing. They are overjoyed to receive Irina’s help.
