MARCH WITH CORK – NEW YORK C ITY ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE ON TUESDAY, MARCH 17TH. Cork will assemble at 2:45 p.m. on West 47th St., between 5th & 6th Avenues. Please dress appropriately for both the solemnity of the occasion and for the weather. Friends and family of Cork are welcome to march with the contingent as long as they follow the appropriate dress code – no beads, silly hats, brightly colored hair. Please remember that this is a day to show pride in our Irish heritage and its contributions to history and culture. Be sure to tune your TV to WNBC, Channel 4, from 11 am to 4 pm to watch Treasa Goodwin-Smyth and Tommy Smyth, along with their co-anchors, deliver commentary and history, and share many personal stories, for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade broadcast.

EASTCHESTER ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE: Join the Cork contingent on Sunday, March 15th at 3pm. The Parade starts at the Immaculate Conception School and proceeds north on Main Street, Eastchester, ending at the Lake Isle Country Club. For information on assembling and/or viewing, please visit their website: www.eastchesterirish.org.

YONKERS ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE ON MCLEAN AVENUE: The Cork contingent will also march in Yonkers on Saturday, March 21st at 1pm. Mass at St. Barnabas High School Chapel on McLean Avenue at 11:30 am. The marchers will step off at 1 pm on McLean Avenue west of Bronx River Road. For information on assembling and/or viewing, please visit www.yonkersstpatricksparade.org.

JEREMIAH O'D ONOVAN R OSSA C ENTENARY: Plans are under way to host a Centenary Commemoration of the death of Cork-born Fenian Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa in June. O’Donovan Rossa was born in Rosscarberry, County Cork. After being imprisioned for plotting a Fenian rising in 1865 and serving five years in prison, he was exiled to America and took up residence in New York City, where he joined Clan na Gael and the Fenian Brotherhood. He died in Staten Island 1915 at the age of 83 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetary. The committee is also working to coordinate our commemoration with others being held in Ireland and here in New York. More information will be shared as plans are finalized.

In February 2008 member Mary Naughton brought to our attention the plight of her cousin, 2-year-old Grace O'Gorman, whose father came from Passage West in Co. Cork and lived in England. Grace had been diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma and was receiving treatment

at Sloan Kettering. The estimated cost of her treatment was approximately $800,000. The Cork Association hosted a fundraiser on June 21, 2008.

With the assistance of Michael Gubbins from the Emerald Guild, O'Malley's Charity Golf Outing, Start Elevator and Barry Riordan from Emerald Guild who hosted a pub quiz at the Kinsale Tavern and the Frances Pope Foundation, we raised over $100,000 for Grace's treatment. The family relocated to New York and lived here for over a year so that Grace could be treated.

The good news today from her Dad Kevin is that Grace has been advised by Sloan Kettering that she is in good health and does not need to return for any further check ups. She is nine years old now and attends school in London and is thriving.
