Welcome

Coombe Wood Golf Club, one of the friendliest clubs in Surrey, is only nine miles from central London yet offers peace and tranquillity and stunning views over the Surrey Downs.

The course, situated within the exclusive Coombe Estate near Kingston upon Thames, was conceived by Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, and his two younger sons. It opened for play as a nine-hole layout in 1904, expanding to 18 holes in 1922.

The 5,285-yard course (par 66) has an excellent reputation both for its condition and design, while there is something to interest golfers at all levels, with each hole offering its own unique challenge.

The club has been progressive ever since its inception,

with developments continually being made to the club complex to expand and improve the facilities for both members and visitors.

We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap.

Our impressive clubhouse has excellent facilities including the bar, restaurant and main function room where social and business functions take place throughout the year.

We work hard at ensuring we provide everyone with a fantastic service so come and see what makes us special.

About the Course

Coombe Wood is a mature parkland course renowned for its challenging par 3s comple-mented by the tree-lined par 4s and heavily bunkered greens.

The course is tight and sets a premium on accuracy and shot control. Out of bounds is a danger at many holes and there are numerous other hazards to be negotiated.

In 1922 the course was extended to 18 holes with a par of 66 and currently measures 5,285 yards from the white tees. The key to keeping a good score going is to always ensure careful positioning of tee shots.

The toughest hole on the course is the par-4 13th. This hole requires two long, straight shots before approaching a green surrounded by bunkers, while the green has many subtle borrows to be cautious of.

Water comes into play on several holes, with a number of strategically-placed ditches and brooks, while the more than adequate bunkering makes the course a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Our signature hole is the challenging par-4 11th. This picturesque hole has a right to left sloping fairway, while a ditch and numerous bunkers make the approach to the green challenging.

But don’t just take our word for it. Search the internet for reviews of our course from unbiased yet demanding golf-ers and you will find – consistently – that we come highly recommended from the people that matter.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com8

History of the Club

The course, which was originally a nine-hole layout, was officially opened in 1904 on part of the 1,300-acre Coombe Estate which had been acquired by the Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge.

The Duke’s son, Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, was Commander in Chief of the British Army from 1856-1895 and it was he and his sons who decided to convert an unsightly gravel pit into the magnificent golf course we find today.

Sadly, Prince George did not live to see his dream come to fruition. He died in 1904 and later that year his two sons, Colonel Sir Augustus and Admiral Sir Aldolphus Fitzgeorge, opened the course. The Hon Arthur Balfour, the Prime Minister, no less, was named Captain.

We are proud of our heritage and one of our trophies, the Cambridge Cup, is named after the Duke of Cambridge. Our oldest piece of silverware, it was first played for in 1911.

Following the conclusion of the First World War, the local hockey and cricket clubs disappeared, releasing the land they had occupied, allowing the development of an 18-hole golf course – 10 holes above George Road and eight below.

This new 18-hole version was opened in 1922 by Field Marshall Earl Haig, the then Captain. The Ladies’ section, meanwhile, was flourishing as it became autonomous by 1925 and had its own captain.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 9

After the Colonel’s death in 1933, the remaining 700 acres of the Estate were sold. Malden and Coombe Council saved the Club from extinction by purchasing the land from Higgs and Hill and leasing it back to the Club.

A series of short-term leases were negotiated over the ensuing years, but with no long term security investment into the Club was sparse and after the Second World War the clubhouse and course were badly run down

The club only managed to survive due to its then members, who invested both financially and physically. It paid off, as the club survived and in 1994 purchased a new 125-year lease, securing our tenure until 2119. This security enabled us to redevelop the clubhouse in 2002-03, just in time to celebrate our centenary.

Some names now legendary in the world of golf are forever linked with Coombe Wood golf course.

We have had some outstanding golfers at Coombe Wood over the years. John de Forest was English Amateur champion in 1932 and P W L Risdon was an English international during the 30s. Pam Barton was British Ladies Champion in 1936 and more recently James Heath won the Lytham trophy by a record 10 shots and also the English Amateur Championship, both in 2004.

While many things have changed since inception, the course still provides as stern a challenge now as it did in the pioneering days at the start of the 20th century.

Course Tour

If you have never played at Coombe Wood Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1, 494 yards, par 5The tee shot should be aimed slightly right of centre to give the best line for the second shot, which is played blind over the ‘cliff’ to the second half of the fairway. Take note of the marker post at the back of the green. Long hitters should be aware of running out of fairway to the right off the tee and being blocked out by trees.

Hole 2, 362 yards, par 4The tee shot needs to favour centre/right of the fairway to

open up the green for the second shot. A well struck drive will leave only a short second to a generous green.

Hole 3, 212 yards, par 3A real challenge of a par 3. Long and with trouble on all sides. Higher handicaps would do well to play a medium iron from the tee and not risk the greenside bunkers or out of bounds on the right and left.

Hole 4, 354 yards, par 4 As is so often the case at Coombe Wood the emphasis here is on accuracy. For the longer hitters a three wood or long iron from the tee as close as you dare to the line of poplars on the left will leave only a short pitch to the green. Safety off the tee can be found right of centre of the fairway, but a much longer second to a well bunkered green is the result.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com12

Course TourCONTINUED

Hole 5, 180 yards, par 3A two tiered green, so check the pin placement before selecting your club. The tee is sheltered from everything but a headwind, be careful to check the direction.

Hole 6, 428 yards, par 4A straight drive landing centre/right is ideal as the fairway tends to kick the ball to the left. Club selection is important going into the green as a front or back pin placement makes a big difference.

Hole 7, 337 yards, par 4Don’t get greedy from the tee, the fairway bunkers are deeper than you might think and will make it difficult to reach the green. A three wood or long iron to the fairway will leave only a short shot.

Hole 8, 212 yards, par 3Another long par 3. Aim slightly left for the shortest route over the ‘cliff’. Anything hit too far to the right is in big trouble.

Hole 9, 294 yards, par 4Longer hitters may take on this par 4 and be rewarded, but the entrance to the green is narrow. Any doubts, then hit an iron from the tee but beware the fairway bunkers to the right.

Hole 10, 152 yards, par 3Another tough par 3 before crossing the road on to the bottom half of the course. This hole can be deceptive from the tee. When the pin is at the back left of the green aim for the bank and let the ball run down to the flag.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 13

Hole 11, 392 yards, par 4Aim the drive just to the right of centre as the fairway kicks the ball to the left. Longer hitters might consider a long iron from the tee if downwind to avoid the ditch running across the fairway. The green, like the fairway will tend to kick the ball from right to left.

Hole 12, 184 yards, par 3A tee shot finishing below the hole will leave the best chance of a makeable putt. Anything from above the hole when running quickly could have your nerves in tatters on this sloping green.

Hole 13, 434 yards, par 4A good straight drive is paramount on this tough par 4. The second shot plays longer than the yardage might suggest and should be aimed centre/right of the green.

Hole 14, 135 yards, par 3A swirling wind should be carefully studied on this tee as should pin placement, both making a big difference to club selection.

Hole 15, 296 yards, par 4A fairway wood or long iron tee aimed just to the left of the fairway bunker will leave a short iron to the green. The second shot needs to be played positively to this uphill green.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 15

Course TourCONTINUED

Hole 16, 282 yards, par 4Aim left of centre off the tee to allow the slope to take the ball to the right. Anything too far left however and the out of bounds is waiting. A risky tee shot for the longer hitters to take on the green but the reward could be great.

Hole 17, 149 yards, par 3Club selection is again the emphasis on this tricky downhill par 3 but if in doubt, take the shorter club as the big trouble is at the back of the green.

Hole 18, 393 yards, par 4Uphill all the way, the tee shot must be well struck to avoid a very long second shot. The line from the tee should be at the right half of the clubhouse. Longer hitters should be aware of the ditch that runs across the fairway. Take plenty of club on the second shot up the hill to the narrow green.

Practice Facilities

One of the often-overlooked criteria in choosing a golf club to belong to is the standard of its practice facilities.

While the course is obviously of paramount importance, the game of golf is a never-ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence and the only way to improve is by spending time working on the areas of our game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations.

The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a large putting green that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle borrows of the greens on the course.

A chipping area and practice bunker are also available for golfers looking to perfect those round-saving up-and-downs and sand saves. For those who find time is at a premium, there are two practice nets that afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

The long game is not overlooked, either, with a practice range accessible to those wishing to acclimatise themselves to how they are actually striking the ball.

Members’ Golf

Members at Coombe Wood enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

One of the big attractions to new and established members are the ‘Roll up’ games we host on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while our non-competition weekends are also available for members to come along and enjoy a friendly day of golf.

There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at Coombe Wood and you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities.

GentlemenThe men’s section at Coombe Wood Golf Club is strong on competitive golf both within the club and with other golf clubs and leagues.

The full members meet up to play in the regular ‘roll ups’, a great way to meet other members, as well as monthly medals and trophy competitions held either on a Saturday or Sunday.

Coombe Wood also hosts a number of Club Matches, while members with a recognised handicap are able to play for the club’s league teams in the Warren League and the Hilliard League.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 31

The Club plays in many friendlies, both men and mixed, while there are also men’s and mixed knockout competitions running throughout the summer.

While there is a keen focus on competitive golf – and a likely contributory factor as to why we have competed so well in the team competitions – balance is always a good thing.

We provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.

Success is celebrated at the annual dinner, at which bragging rights are gained, golfing anecdotes and conquests are relived and trophies are polished.

LadiesThe Ladies section at Coombe Wood has a full range of playing abilities catering for all standard of golfers.

We have a busy calendar with medals, Stablefords and trophy competitions played throughout the year, as well as ample opportunity for social golf during our Ladies’ Day every Tuesday.

The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with members entering the prestigious Aston Martin competition that takes place in mid-October.

We also play a number of friendly matches against other clubs on a home and away basis both mid-week and at the weekend.

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com32

These matches are very sociable occasions, with the chance to socialise and catch up with old friends as eagerly anticipated as the opportunity to play golf itself.

Ladies will find Coombe Wood the ideal place to play and improve their golf, with a warm welcome awaiting new members.

JuniorsAt Coombe Wood Golf Club we welcome juniors of all ages and standards to come and have a fun, safe and positive experience when playing golf.

We currently have a number of junior members aged 8 to 18 with the opportunity to compete in regular weekly competitions and inter-club team matches.

In the summer months Junior groups play on Friday evenings, while matches are played against other Surrey club teams on a home and away basis.

We hold one open competition a year at the club, which is the September Junior Open, an 18 hole scratch and handicap medal competition, with winners qualifying for the SCGU Junior Order of Merit.

Coombe Wood is now well established as one of the leading club in the development of junior golfers, having achieved England Golf’s highly-coveted GolfMark accreditation.

We have a dedicated team of adults to ensure our golfers are looked after and encouraged. Over the last several years Coombe Wood has produced many fine young players including former English Amateur champion and now tournament professional, James Heath.

Members’ GolfCONTINUED

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 33

SeniorsThe Seniors are a very strong section of the Club, meeting every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for either fun competitions or qualifying medals and Stablefords.

We currently have over 100 Senior members with those that compete naming their group The Fellowship Of Retired Gentlemen Golfers, or ‘FROGGS’.

They organise a number of social events throughout the year, including regular new members’ evenings to ensure that early experiences for newcomers are completely positive. Not for nothing are they known as ‘the friendliest Club in Surrey.’

Coombe Wood Golf Club - www.coombewoodgolf.com 35

The Academy

A successful innovation introduced to Coombe Wood recently is our Golf Academy Member-ship that offers the chance of lessons and to play the course. This is an ideal way for adults to sample the game before taking the step to full membership and will be particularly attractive to both beginners and those returning to golf after an absence.

It offers a fantastic all-round package at an incredible price featuring a great deal of golf, tuition and the chance to make use of the club’s excellent off-course facilities. Having discovered the delights of the game of golf and of Coombe Wood in particular, Academy members are then entitled to a discount on full club membership.

While the membership is of a one-year duration, fast improvers will be encouraged to upgrade to full member-ship as soon as they are ready. This membership is overseen by the Professionals at the Pro Shop, including monitoring of playing standards, allocating handicaps and assessment of readiness for full membership.

The Academy has provided many new golfers with the opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment and make many new friends on their way to full membership.

If you would like any further information or an application form to join the Academy please contact Phil Wright, the Club Professional, on 02089 426764.

Functions

Here at Coombe Wood we want to dispel the preconceived notion that golf clubs are stuffy, old-fashioned places that are unwelcoming to anyone aside from their members.

We are a lively, forward-thinking club and have invested heavily in creating a purpose-built facility that is comparable to any other in the county or beyond. Nothing would make us happier than welcoming our non-golfing neighbours and turning them into friends who view their local club as a community facility.

If you are planning a special occasion such as a notable birthday or retirement party, pay us a visit and see what Coombe Wood has to offer.

We now have two function suites that will cater for most occasions, be those Christmas, New Year or birthday parties, wakes, christenings, weddings or Bah Mitzvahs. The main room can hold up to 120 for seated dinner or up to 200 for a buffet-style meal and this spacious room also has a built-in dance floor and bar.

In our bar the House Manager is always keen to ensure we are well stocked with exciting wines and beers that are competitively priced.

Whatever the nature or size of your event, you can rely on the skill, enthusiasm and dedication of our experienced team to ensure your event runs smoothly.

Social activities

Our splendid course should be reason enough to become part of Coombe Wood but the club has an active social scene too. The members are renowned for their friendliness and if not trying to break par, like nothing better than to spend an evening in each other’s company.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

Members celebrate Guy Fawkes night together in the surrounds of our course, while New Year’s Eve is always a very special time of year at the Club and is celebrated with a sit-down meal before dancing and welcoming in the new year.

The catering at Coombe Wood is held in high regard and many of our social gatherings are an excellent excuse to sample the fare provided by our superb caterers.

One of the highlights of the year is the Valedictory Dinner Dance in September, a black tie event that celebrates the end of the current Club Captain’s tenure with a 3-course meal, entertainment and a boogie on the dance floor.

Live bands and singers always prove to be very popular, as do our regular quiz nights, while barbeques and comedy nights are always well attended.

For more information or if you would like to book tickets for any of our social events, please do not hesitate to call us on 0208 942 3828.
