The Consequence of Sin- Man Separated From God
Isaiah 59:1-8
Man’s Greatest Problem
• Why?– Can cost one his or her soul
– Cannot be solved by man
Recall
• Sin depends on two things– A totally righteous God
– A man who is free to make choices
• As a result– Man is accountable
– Sin is ultimately rebellion
Sin Brings Separation
• Separated from God– True of Israel (Isaiah 59:1, 2)
– Necessary because God is light (1 John 1:5, 6)
Sin Brings Separation
• Separated from self– Shame (Genesis 3:8-11)
– Anger (Genesis 4:5-8)
– Paranoia (Proverbs 28:1)
– Darkened mind (Romans 1:21, 28)
– Seared conscience (1 Timothy 4:2)
– Further sin (Ephesians 4:18, 19)
Sin Brings Separation
• Separated from others– Adam accused Eve (Genesis 3:12)
– Mistreat others (Psalm 7:12-16; Titus 3:3)
Sin Brings Separation
• Separated from nature– It too was cursed (Genesis 3:16-19)
– Live in a hostile environment
– Need to learn the emptiness of life without God (Ecclesiastes 1:1-11)
Sin Brings Slavery
• Desire for freedom– “I Did It My Way” (Frank Sinatra)
– Wars are fought for freedom
– Some became slaves in order to gain freedom
Sin Brings Slavery
• Result is slavery– All men (Romans 3:23)
– The “bait” is the promise of liberty. (2 Peter 3:18-22)
Freedom Versus Slavery
• Free lifestyle– Pleasure
– No commitment
• Free from pain
• Fornication– Diseases
– Aborted child
• Euthanasia (murder)
Sin Brings Slavery
• Overcome and enslaved– Desire for riches? Serve mammon
(Matthew 6:24; 1 Timothy 6:9-11)
– Desire for power? Serve our own lusts (1 John 2:15-17)
– Desire for fame? Serve other’s wishes (John 12:42)
Sin Brings Slavery
• Desire for freedom ends in destruction– Always begins with a desire
(Matthew 15:18-20; James 1:13-16)
– Produces action (1 Kings 21)
– Ends in destruction (Romans 6:23)
– Sin is an act of war against God
Conclusion
• Are you in bondage to Satan? (Romans 6:16-18)
• Why not come to Jesus and be free? (Romans 8:1, 2)
