I remember when I was really young, I used to visit the nursing home when my mom was working and color with them by numbers. This always put a big smile on their face and making them smile is what always stuck with me. Allstate melts away winter worries with hot tips for homeownersIf history is any indication,

Allstate agency owner TimVanden Heuvel says home-owners could be withoutpower, using space heatersand worrying about frozenpipes after the cold weatherNortheast Wisconsin has ex-perienced in the last fewweeks.

After the last stretch of se-vere cold weather in 2014,Allstate had nearly twice asmany water-related propertyclaims compared to themonths of January, February

and March in 2016, 2017 and2018 (and approximately35% more than 2015). As wecontinue to see cold tempera-tures, Allstate reminds home-owners of a few simple tipsand tricks to help stop furtherdamage:

Avoiding or ThawingFrozen Pipes

• The Red Cross suggestsleaving cabinet doorsopen and using a fan tocirculate the warmer air

around pipes near exteriorwalls during a hardfreeze.

• Let water faucets slowlydrip to help prevent waterfrom freezing and to re-lieve pressure in the eventthat some water doesfreeze, says the InsuranceInstitute for Business andHome Safety (IBHS).

• If your pipes do freeze, leave the faucet on anduse a blow dryer (neveran open flame torch orother device) to help heat

the pipe until there’s asteady flow of water, saysIBHS.

Handling and PreventingIce Dams

• In the event an ice damforms, the NationalWeather Service suggestskeeping the attic wellventilated — the colderthe attic, the less meltingand refreezing on yourroof.

• To help prevent ice dams

in the future, homeownerscan add extra attic floormaterial to help keep thewarm air inside theirhome and out of the atticbefore the next big coldsnap, according to ThisOld House.

How and When to Use Space Heaters

• Set space heaters up on alevel surface and out ofreach of anything flam-mable (at least three feet

away from clothing, cur-tains, etc.).

• A space heater should beplugged in directly to anoutlet – not used with apower strip.

• Space heaters should beturned off before youleave a room or go tosleep. If possible, use onewith an automatic shutoffin case it falls over.

Following these tips couldhelp prevent additional lossesthis winter.

Back pain? When toget some helpSubmitted by Bob Brady PT,ProMotion in Howard

With all of the snow we aregetting, many of you aredoing more shoveling andsnow blowing than you areused to. This may result inyou feeling some pain in yourlow back. At what pointshould you get some treat-ment? Should you wait awhile for it to go away or gettreatment right away? Does itreally matter?

For most episodes of a newonset of back pain, I am not aproponent of someone rush-ing to get treatment rightaway. Research has shown usthat most new back pain willget better if a person follows afew simple steps:

• Attempt to stay active withhome, exercise, and workactivities. Make some re-visions as needed, but at-tempt to keep doingactivities you are used to.

• Minimize worry aboutyour back-although it can

hurt a lot, in only rare sit-uations (less than 5% ofback pain) is there some-thing seriously wrong.

• Change positions fre-quently throughout theday and evening-sit a bit,stand a bit, lay down a bit.

• Attempt to maintain qual-ity sleep-getting adequaterest will help you recoverquicker.

However, what if you aredoing some of these thingsand the pain does not seem tobe improving? Or, more con-cerning, what if it is gettingworse? In this situation, itmight be better to get in forsome treatment and appropri-ate advice sooner, rather thanwaiting longer. This is sup-ported by research.

In a 2018 research paper byElizabeth Arnold and col-leagues, the impact of thetiming of physical therapy ona variety of outcomes was as-sessed. In reviewing 11 stud-ies that looked at the timingof physical therapy treatment

for an acute onset of low backpain, the authors concludedthat getting treatment withinthe first 30 days of the onsetof back pain reduced the needfor further health care utiliza-tion (Dr. visits, MRIs, X-rays,injections, surgeries), de-creased overall cost, reducedopioid use, and may improvehealth care efficiency i.e. howsoon you get better.

What does this mean foryou? If you are experiencinga new onset of low back pain,it is totally appropriate to giveit a few days to see if it startsto get better on its own-mostback pain will. However, ifyours is not getting better, oris getting worse, call to getsome assistance by someonespecifically trained in the ev-idence-based care for lowback pain. Overall, it mayhelp you recover quicker, de-crease the need for furthercare, and importantly reducethe risk that you will be of-fered more risky medicationsand/or procedures.

Winter Slip And Fall Prevention- Stretch before going outside. When muscles are limber it can reduce chances of breaks.- Wear appropriate footwear that provides traction on ice and in snow.- Take short steps and shuffle your feet for stability.- Keep your center of gravity over your feet and both hands free for balance, rather than in your pockets.- Use special care when entering vehicles.- Avoid listening to music, talking on the phone, or texting.- If you start to fall, worry only about falling. Drop what you’re holding and do not tense up. Spread the impact. You’re more likely to break something if only a single part of your body takes the full force of the fall.

Be careful whereyou dump yourtrash

Garbage dumpsters and recycling dumpsters located onprivate business properties are not intended for publicuse. Most businesses have pickup schedules designedfor their needs and public use creates issues and additional costs for those businesses. Some businesseshave attempted to deter illegal dumping by lockingdumpsters and even placing surveillance cameras onthem. Roth vs. Traditional 401(k):Which is right for you? submitted by Ilya Dayter, Ed-ward Jones Financial Advi-sor

For many years, employeesof companies that offered401(k) plans only faced acouple of key decisions –how much to contribute andhow to allocate their dollarsamong the various investmentoptions in their plan. But inrecent years, a third choicehas emerged: the traditionalversus Roth 401(k). Which isright for you?

To begin with, you need tounderstand the key differencebetween the two types of401(k) plans. When you in-vest in a traditional 401(k),you put in pre-tax dollars, sothe more you contribute, thelower your taxable income.Your contributions and earn-ings grow tax-deferred untilyou begin taking with-drawals, which will be taxedat your ordinary tax rate. Witha Roth 401(k), the situation isessentially reversed. You con-tribute after-tax dollars, soyou won’t lower your taxable

income, but withdrawals ofcontributions and earningsare tax-free at age 59-1/2, aslong as you’ve held the ac-count at least five years.

So, now that you’ve got thebasics of the two types of401(k) plans, which shouldyou choose? There’s no oneright answer for everyone. You essentially need to askyourself these questions:When do you want to paytaxes? And what will your taxrate be in the future?

If you’re just starting out inyour career, and you’re in arelatively low income taxbracket, but you think youmight be in a higher onewhen you retire, you mightwant to consider the Roth401(k). You’ll be payingtaxes now on the money youearn and contribute to yourRoth account, but you’llavoid being taxed at thehigher rate when you starttaking withdrawals. Con-versely, if you think your taxrate will be lower when youretire, you might be more in-clined to go with the tradi-

tional 401(k), which allowsyou to avoid paying taxes onyour contributions now, whenyour tax rate is high.

Of course, you can see theobvious problem with thesechoices – specifically, howcan you know with any cer-tainty if your tax bracket willbe lower or higher when youretire? Many people automat-ically assume that once theystop working, their tax liabil-ities will drop, but that’s notalways the case. Given theirsources of retirement incomefrom investment accounts andSocial Security, many peoplesee no drop in their taxbracket once they retire.

Since you can’t see into thefuture, your best move mightbe to split the difference, so tospeak. Although not all busi-

nesses offer the Roth 401(k)option, many of those that dowill allow employees to di-vide their contributions be-tween the Roth andtraditional accounts. If youchose this route, you couldenjoy the benefits of both, butyou still can’t exceed the totalannual 401(k) contributionlimit, which for 2019 is$19,000, or $25,000 if you’re50 or older.

You may want to consultwith your tax advisor beforemaking any decisions about aRoth or traditional 401(k) – orRoth and traditional 401(k) –but in the final analysis, theseare positive choices to make, because a 401(k), in whateverform, is a great way to savefor retirement. Try to take fulladvantage of it.

From the Howard-Suamico School District School Board

HSSD safety updateThe tragic school shooting

that claimed 17 lives at ahigh school in Parkland,Florida a year ago promptedmourning, debate, and reflec-tion across the nation. TheHSSD Board and districtleadership reflected deeplyand decided to review ourown safety and security poli-cies and protocols. Mediacoverage of, and subsequentdebates after the Parkland in-cident, unlike past schoolshootings, illustrated a strongstudent and parent voiceacross the nation regardingsafety and security inschools.

On August 22, 2018, theDistrict hosted a StudentSafety and School SecuritySummit at Lineville Interme-diate School. This event wasthe first of its kind atHoward-Suamico. Boardmembers, district leaders, staff members, parents andstudents attended. The mainobjective was to understandour community’s feelings, questions and ideas on safetyand security. Since the Sum-

mit, much work has takenplace. This communication isdesigned to share what ac-tions have been taken.

After the Parkland HighSchool event, District leader-ship decided HSSD wouldtake action in two ways.

First, leadership ensuredthat any surplus District fi-nancial resources would beearmarked only for staffinginvestments that helped cre-ate a more safe and securelearning environment. To thisend, the following positionswere added: Bay Port HighSchool Associate Principal, one full-time social worker, one full-time school coun-selor, two Student Advocates, and a Safety and SecurityCoordinator. These invest-ments were made before thefirst day of school in Septem-ber, 2018.

Second, District leadershipinitiated a new committeewith a diverse team of repre-sentatives including studentsand parents. The team hasmet seven times thus far. TheSafety and Security Commit-

tee mission is: to foster safeand secure educational envi-ronments for all Districtstakeholders. The functionsof the Committee are to con-duct proactive policy andprotocol review, recommendinvestments related to safetyand security, and to enhancestudent, staff, district, com-munity engagement and part-nership.

The Safety and SecurityCommittee started thisschool year by securing over$528,000 in State SafetyGrants. The bulk of the grantfunding has been utilized totrain all employees in bothALICE (threat response) andTrauma Informed Care (men-tal wellness). By the end ofthis year, all employees willbe trained in each of the pro-grams. Grant funds werecontingent on the Districtcompleting school buildingassessments. The assess-ments were submitted to theState Office of School Safetyand resulted in 12 recom-mendations on shoring upour building access protocol.

At this time, school buildingsare testing the recommenda-tions to inform how we canmake all schools safer.

The Safety and SecurityCommittee has more work todo. Each month the team isdiscussing what enhance-ments are needed to keep im-proving the learningenvironment for all. Cur-rently the Committee isworking on ways to engagemore students, parents, andcommunity partners. Perhapsthis is the most importantwork the Committee is ac-complishing, as everyone’svoice matters in regard tosafety and security. Doingwhat we can to protect ourstudents, parents, and staff isour most important responsi-bility.
