Welcome to God’s House “I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” This was God’s promise. The Festival of Pentecost

fulfills that promise as we celebrate the person and work of the Holy

Spirit. Fifty days after Christ’s resurrection, the Spirit’s arrival brought

life and vitality to the Church. That same Spirit continues to lead,

feed, and give life to God’s people through God’s Word and sacraments. Through these

means of grace, the Church continues to be renewed and to grow.

Opening Hymn Holy Spirit, Light Divine CW #183:1-4 Holy Spirit, Light divine, shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the gloom of night away; turn the darkness into day. Holy Spirit, Love divine, cleanse this guilty heart of mine;

In your mercy pity me; from sin’s bondage set me free. Holy Spirit, Joy divine, cheer this saddened heart of mine;

Fill me with your heav’nly peace; let it grow and still increase. Holy Spirit, Pow’r divine, dwell within this heart of mine;

Cast down ev’ry idol throne; reign supreme and reign alone.

Invocation and Opening Dialogue M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. M: Come Holy Ghost, Creator blest,

C: And make our hearts your place of rest. M: Come with your grace and heavenly aid,

C: And fill the hearts which you have made. M: Drive far away our wily foe,

C: And your abiding peace bestow. M: If you are our protecting guide,

C: No evil can with us abide. M: Teach us to know the Father, Son,

C: And you, from both, as Three in One, M: That we your name may ever bless

C: And in our lives the truth confess. C: ♫ See, to you I give my heart; cleanse my life in ev’ry part; CW #183:5

Your own temple I would be now and for eternity.

Confession of Sins and Absolution M: When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said, “What shall we

do?”

C: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the

forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 M: Let us then confess our sins to God…

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what

we have left undone. We have not loved with our whole heart; we have not loved

our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your temporal and eternal

punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways.

Amen. M: The promise is for you and your children, for all whom the Lord will call, and God’s

promise is that he forgives sin and remembers it no more, for the sake of Jesus Christ.

As a called servant of Christ, and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the

name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. Thanks be to God! Come, Holy Spirit! M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise…

C: ♫ Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

Prayer of the Day M: Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace.

Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may

tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the

Father, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Lesson Joel 2:28-29 28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams,

your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Psalm 51:10-12 Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God CW #272

Second Lesson Acts 2:1-21 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound

Page 5: THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT HE DAY OF ENTECOSTzionallenton.org/zionmobile/doc/Bulletin 2020-05-31.pdf · Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your

like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they

were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest

on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other

tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one

heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these

men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own

native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and

Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near

Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we

hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed,

they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow

Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what

I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is

what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below,

blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood

before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Verse of the Day M: Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people,

C: and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

Gospel John 16:5-11 5"Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.7But I tell you the truth: It is for

your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if

I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to

sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no

longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands

condemned. M: This is the gospel of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God!

Confession of Faith Luther’s Explanation to the Third Article I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or

come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his

gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers,

enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus

Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me

and all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to

me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

Hymn of the Day Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest CW#177 Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and make our hearts your place of rest;

Come with your grace and heav’nly aid, and fill the hearts which you have made. To you, the Counselor, we cry, to you, the gift of God most high;

The fount of life, the fire of love, the soul’s anointing from above. Your light to ev’ry thought impart, and shed your love in ev’ry heart;

The weakness of our mortal state with deathless might invigorate.

Prayer of the Church for Pentecost M: Holy Spirit, we worship and glorify you as the Lord and giver of all spiritual life. By our

own thinking and choosing, we would still be lost in our sins, wandering in the

spiritual darkness toward eternal death. Only by your gift of faith do we now confess

that Jesus Christ is our Lord; only by your enlightenment do we know the loving heart

of our Father in heaven and his promise of eternal life in Christ.

C: With the Father and the Son, you are one God, one Lord. M: We thank you for fulfilling the Word you gave by the prophets and the promise

spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ. You came down on the Day of Pentecost to guide

and comfort the apostles, to lead them into all truth, and to reveal your plan to save

us.

C: Extend your Church throughout the world by the words we speak and the

messengers we send. M: We praise you for calling us by the gospel and making us sons and daughters of God

by faith in Christ Jesus. By Baptism you clothed us in his righteousness. You gathered

us into his flock, the one holy Christian Church, where we hear the Shepherd’s voice

proclaiming the forgiveness of all our sins. Live in us, Holy Spirit, and warm our hearts

with the fire of your love.

C: Continue to preserve us in this one true faith by the means you have chosen, our

Savior’s gospel in Word and sacraments. Enable us to present ourselves with all our

abilities as thank offerings to him who sacrificed himself for us. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Sacrament M: The Lord be with you.

C: ♫ And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts.

C: ♫ We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: ♫ It is right to give him thanks and praise. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with

every spiritual blessing. By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he empowered his

Church to be witnesses of Christ to the ends of the earth. Now have come the

salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ.

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and

glory for ever and ever.

C: ♫ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory.

You are my God, and I will exalt you. I will give you thanks, for you have become my

salvation. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory.

Words of Institution M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had

given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my

body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of

you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the

forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: ♫ Amen. C: ♫ O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Distribution Hymn Come, Oh, Come, Life-Giving Spirit #181 Come, oh, come, life-giving Spirit, God from all eternity!

May your power never fail us; dwell within us constantly.

Then shall truth and life and light banish all the gloom of night. Show us, Lord, the path of blessing; when we trespass on our way,

Cast, O Lord, our sins behind you and be with us day by day.

Should we stray, O Lord, recall; work repentance when we fall. With our spirit, Lord, bear witness that we are the saints of God

Who rely upon him solely when we’re chastened by the rod;

For we know, as children should, that the cross is for our good. Prompt us, Lord, to come before him with a childlike heart to pray;

Sigh for us, O Holy Spirit, when we know not what to say.

Then our prayer is not in vain, and our faith new strength shall gain. Grant our hearts in fullest measure wisdom, counsel, purity,

That we always strive to please you, working for you willingly.

Let the gospel spread and grow, bringing Satan’s overthrow.

Thanksgiving C: ♫ Thank the Lord and sing his praise. Tell ev’ryone what he has done. Let all who

seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name. He renews his promises and leads

his people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia! Alleluia! M: Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may

glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may

long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood

the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through

Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and forever.

C: ♫ Amen.

The Blessing M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another.

Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

Closing Hymn O Holy Spirit, Enter In CW #184:2 Give to your Word impressive pow’r that in our hearts from this good hour

As fire it may be glowing,

10:30 a.m. Confirmation Service (confirmands and limited family only) Baptism In a private ceremony yesterday afternoon, Charlotte Jade Bakiras, daughter of

Nick and Brooke, was made a child of God through Holy Baptism. May God keep her in her

baptismal grace all the days of her life. Holy Communion We believe that the Lord comes to us visibly and tangibly in the Lord’s

Supper or Holy Communion. Participation in this Sacrament is a statement of agreement in

this teaching and also our unity in the faith (1 Corinthians 10:17). For these reasons, if you

are not a member of Zion or a sister congregation of the WELS or ELS, we respectfully ask

you to refrain from receiving the Lord’s Supper until we have had an opportunity to explain

this wonderful gift in more detail.

Page 11: THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT HE DAY OF ENTECOSTzionallenton.org/zionmobile/doc/Bulletin 2020-05-31.pdf · Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your

Confirmation Our confirmation service had originally been scheduled for May 10th this

year. Due to the restrictions we were under, that service was moved to next Sunday, June

7th, at 10:30 a.m. Please note that this service will be only for the confirmands and a limited

number of family members. This year’s confirmands are Sophia Bartelt, Nolan Breuer, Lydia

Galleske, Alyce Herman, Dan Jungers, Ryan Roemer and C.J. West. Despite the strange

circumstances this year, Confirmation Day is still a joyous day for students as well as their

congregation. After years of public instructions, they will now profess their faith, enjoy the

privilege of Holy Communion, and be encouraged to grow in faith through the continued

use of God’s Word and Sacrament. We thank Liz Dettmann (Thursday) and Bea Pamperin (Sunday) for serving as our

accompanists this weekend. The flowers on the altar today were placed by Gene and Janet Salzman on the occasion of

their wedding anniversary as well as by Kiki Bruger on the occasion of her birthday.

Check Your Church Mailboxes Even though we’re not worshiping in church for the time

being, please take a quick side trip to your church mailbox. Our church secretary, Janet

Salzman, is going through our membership records to make sure everything is up to date. To

do that, you might find a membership update sheet in your church mailbox. Please take a

minute to complete the information and put it in her mailbox (top row, left side). Thank

you! Please pick up the new Meditations booklet on the table near the kitchen. The devotions

started already last Sunday but it’s not too late to catch up. Copies of the June Forward in

Christ and the church calendars may be picked up there as well. Large Print Bulletins If you would prefer a large-print bulletin, they are available on the

table next to the kitchen in the fellowship hall. Summer Worship Schedule For those who cannot worship on Sundays, we have a year-

round worship service on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m. Plan your week accordingly and join

us. If you can’t make either, either call the church office for area churches which offer

different days and times for services or log onto www.wels.net, click on the “church locator”

in the upper right-hand corner, and follow the directions to find a church near you.
