As Christians united in common faith, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church exists to nurture

believers and bring the lost to faith in Jesus through God’s Holy Word and Sacraments.

Welcome! Restrooms are in the church basement located just at the bottom of the

front stairs. Changing tables are available to parents.

An elevator is available on the north side of the church entrance.

The basement is available to parents needing to quiet small children. The

area is equipped with closed circuit TV.

Hearing assistance devices are also available from the ushers.

Out of respect for all who worship today, please silence all electronic devices.

Those wishing to attend Holy Communion

Lutherans understand Holy Communion as, among other things, a

statement of agreement with the church’s teachings. For this reason, you

will not want to commune with us until you have had a chance to

compare your beliefs with our church’s. Please speak to our pastor about

this before receiving communion with us.

The Day of Pentecost May 31st & June 1st, 2020

Come, Holy Spirit Pentecost marks the birthday of the New Testament Church and celebrates the harvest of

souls won by the Son and gathered by the Spirit through his servants.

HYMN This Day at Your Creating Word – CW 229

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: (spoken) Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and

that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I

have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I

deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly

sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:

Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

KYRIE

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his

only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called

servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the

name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: (spoken) Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold

gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a

true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus

Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and

forever.

C: (spoken) Amen.

FIRST LESSON Joel 2:28, 29 The Prophecy of the Spirit

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and

daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young

men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will

pour out my Spirit in those days.

SERMON TEXT Acts 2:1-21

The outpouring of the Spirit

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven

and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what

seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of

them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in

Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When

they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because

each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they

asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that

each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and

Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and

Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;

visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and

Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own

tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does

this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have

had too much wine.” 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his

voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in

Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the

morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the

last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and

daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men

will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will

pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show

wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and

fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the

moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the

Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

VERSE OF THE DAY (Refrain of Psalm 51b)

GOSPEL LESSON John 16:5-11 The Promise of the Spirit

but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where

are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said

these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going

away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I

will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in

the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,

because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I

am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about

judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son

is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.
