Donations will benefit the United Way of Columbia County and the First Meth- odist benevolence fund. The all-you-can-eat event features a variety of home- made soups as well as rolls, dessert and beverages. The church is located at 101 C Street East in Rainier. An international research team has embarked on a three-year field campaign to measure the key flow, sedi- ment transport and deposi- tional processes operating in the Lower Columbia River. The project is funded by the United Kingdom (UK) Natu- ral Environment Research Council (NERC), which is described as the British equivalent of the National Science Foundation (NSF).) Based at the Clatsop Com- munity College (CCC) Ma- rine and Environmental Re- search and Training Station (MERTS) campus at Tongue Point, just east of Astoria. The project started last De- cember and had its first field season in June and again in September of this year. The NERC project will run for three years and is fo- cused on the river-tidal area between the former Beaver Army Terminal (Port West- ward near Clatskanie) and Hammond. The project team, led by Professor Phil Ash- worth with the University of Brighton in the UK, hopes to be able to share results and project outcomes through a series of seminars, illus- trated talks and workshops for MERTS staff, students, stakeholders and the general public. The first step in this out- reach program is the recent launch of the project website at www.brighton.ac.uk/co- lumbia. The website pro- vides downloads for educa- tional use and archives some of the many photographs of the fieldwork in action. Re- search activities can also be followed on Twitter at #TIFZColumbia and tweets by @RioParana and @bed- form. The June and September 2011 field seasons have been extremely productive and il- luminating, a press release about the project stated. Re- search has now shown that the Columbia frequently changes its shape and form and is particularly responsive to tidal events. The sand islands in Cathlamet Bay build up lay- ers of sediment but preserve few clays or organic matter. The Columbia fieldwork is linked to a mathematical model that aims to predict how the Columbia River will respond to future changes in river discharge and sediment transport. The next field season for the project is scheduled for June 2012 when the team will return to map the bed morphology in the estuary. The NERC project continues to work in partnership with MERTS. “Our international research team received a friendly, open and enthusiastic welcome from the staff at MERTS. We are particularly grateful for the training received on CCC Hosts International Estuary Study the dangers of the Colum- bia River tidal zone, the ac- cess to the rib boat and the use of workshop space for equipment storage and sedi- ment core preparation. We are indebted to both Michael Wilson and Katie Rathmell for the time spent sharing their knowledge and exper- tise of the Columbia River. The workshop/fabrication staff also kindly helped us construct various equipment rigs. You have an impressive and envious infrastructure and we thank you for allow- ing access to it,” commented project leader Ashworth on the MERTS partnership. Those who wish fur- ther information or to pro- vide feedback, may con- tact the project leader, Professor Phil Ashworth at [email protected], visit the project webpage at www.brighton.ac.uk/colum- bia or tweet to @RioParana and add #TIFZColumbia. An international research team has embarked on a three-year field campaign to measure the key flow, sedi-ment transport and deposi-tional processes operating in the Lower Columbia River. The project is funded by the United Kingdom (UK) Natu-ral Environment Research Council (NERC), which is described as the British equivalent of the National Science Foundation (NSF).) Based at the Clatsop Com-munity College (CCC) Ma-rine and Environmental Re-search and Training Station (MERTS) campus at Tongue Point, just east of Astoria. The project started last De-cember and had its first field season in June and again in September of this year. The NERC project will run for three years and is fo-cused on the river-tidal area between the former Beaver Army Terminal (Port West-ward near Clatskanie) and Hammond. The project team, led by Professor Phil Ash-worth with the University of Brighton in the UK, hopes to be able to share results and project outcomes through

a series of seminars, illus-trated talks and workshops for MERTS staff, students, stakeholders and the general public. The first step in this out-reach program is the recent launch of the project website at www.brighton.ac.uk/co-lumbia. The website pro-vides downloads for educa-tional use and archives some of the many photographs of the fieldwork in action. Re-search activities can also be followed on Twitter at #TIFZColumbia and tweets by @RioParana and @bed-form. The June and September 2011 field seasons have been extremely productive and il-luminating, a press release about the project stated. Re-search has now shown that the Columbia frequently changes its shape and form and is particularly responsive to tidal events. The sand islands in Cathlamet Bay build up lay-ers of sediment but preserve few clays or organic matter. We are particularly grateful for the training received on

CCC Hosts International Estuary Studythe dangers of the Colum-bia River tidal zone, the ac-cess to the rib boat and the use of workshop space for equipment storage and sedi-ment core preparation. We are indebted to both Michael Wilson and Katie Rathmell for the time spent sharing their knowledge and exper-tise of the Columbia River. The workshop/fabrication staff also kindly helped us construct various equipment rigs. You have an impressive and envious infrastructure and we thank you for allow-ing access to it,” commented project leader Ashworth on the MERTS partnership.
