Dear Friends,

What is the spirit of adventure? Where does it come from? An innate desire to explore? A need to know what is out there and where we come from? Does the exploration of our physical world speak to that of our inner world? How better to contemplate both than through an exquisite cruise through the ancient worlds of the Greco-Roman Empire while being treated to private concerts of stirring chamber music by artists from the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival. In the spirit of musical adventure, we’ll bring along gypsy-jazz guitarist Stephane Wrembel—perhaps best well known for his soundtrack to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris —who will treat you to his particularly far-reaching musical style, inspired by the Romani, and encompassing styles from many continents. I am delighted that I will be performing for you with Stephane and our other superb artists, including festival-favorites Orion Weiss, Cindy Wu, and Raman Ramakrishnan, whose biographies appear on the facing page.

Also exciting is having Lewis Lapham with us on this voyage. For thirty years Lewis was editor of Harper’s Magazine. The New York Times has likened him to H. L. Mencken, Vanity Fair suggests that he is a 21st-century Mark Twain, and Tom Wolfe has compared him to Montaigne. And joining him is Stacy Madeleine Schiff, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and guest columnist for The New York Times. Among her several books are Cleopatra, Vera, A Great Inquisition, and the recently released The Witches: Salem, 1692. Sharing with us their insights on culture will be a highlight of the voyage.

And now let’s talk about the itinerary. Our voyage includes some the best sites of ancient Greece and imperial Rome. We’ll visit Pompeii, a city of the first century frozen in time. We’ll also explore the sacred island of Delos, in Greek mythology the birthplace of Apollo and his sister Artemis. We’ll wander the streets of the extraordinary ancient city Ephesus, a city that was known to Alexander the Great and St. Paul. And we’ll sail to the island of Mykonos, a place renowned for its whitewashed cubic architecture and multitude of tiny chapels.

What truly sets this voyage apart is the unique combination of musicians, presenting works from the classical tradition and those newly arranged just for the musicians onboard this voyage. This voyage is an exceptional opportunity for us to enjoy exquisite musical performances aboard an intimate ship while visiting some of the finest sites in the Mediterranean. I urge you to book early—our last cruise sold out quickly—and I look forward to seeing you aboard Le Lyrial.

Sincerely,

Marya Martin Founder and Artistic Director Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival

Internationally acclaimed flutist Marya Martin is Founder and Artistic Director of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival. She enjoys a career of remarkable breadth and achievement. Gracefully balancing the roles of chamber musician, festival director, soloist, and teacher, she has appeared with major orchestras, leading festivals, and chamber music series worldwide. A top prize-winner in the Naumburg, Rampal International, and Munich competitions, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Martin has appeared in London’s Royal Albert

Hall and Wigmore Hall, and Sydney Opera House, among many others. Committed to expanding the flute repertoire, she has commissioned more than twenty works. A New Zealand native, Martin serves on the Manhattan School of Music’s faculty.

He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award-winning film Midnight in Paris. French-born, Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer stephane Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Romanis at campsites in the French countryside—has made his mark as one of today’s most original guitar voices. Although he built his reputation as a stylist in the mode of the iconic French Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel’s music touches upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock.

Pianist orion Weiss is among the most sought-after soloists and collaborators of his generation. In recent seasons he has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, and New York Philharmonic. As a recitalist and chamber musician, he has appeared at Ravinia, Seattle Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society SummerFest, and Chamber Music Northwest. In 2005, he made recital debuts at New York’s Alice Tully Hall and

the Louvre in Paris. Mr. Weiss graduated from The Juilliard School where he studied with Emanuel Ax.

Violinist/Violist Tien-hsin Cindy Wu enjoys a versatile career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Wu has collaborated in concert with celebrated artists Teddy Abrahms, Gary Graffman, Kim Kashkashian, Ida Kavafian, Midori, Thomas Quasthoff, Yuja Wang, and members of the Alban Berg, Brentano, Cleveland, Guarneri, Miró, and Tokyo string quartets at venues including Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and at festivals including La Jolla Summerfest, Santa Fe Chamber Music

Festival, and Marlboro Music Festival. She is currently the Artist in Residence of the Da Camera Society in Los Angeles.

As a founding member of the Daedalus Quartet, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan won the grand prize at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition. He has performed with the quartet across North America and Europe, and in Japan, Hong Kong, and Panama. He has given recitals in New York, Boston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., and performed chamber music at Caramoor, Bargemusic, and the Boston Chamber Music Society, and at the Bridgehampton, Aspen, Marlboro, Mehli Mehta (India), and Vail Music Festivals. He toured with musicians from

Marlboro, is a member of the East Coast Chamber Orchestra, and performed with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

Thor Jensen was born in New York City, and grew up in southeastern Connecticut. Jensen is a self-taught guitarist who has toured extensively in the United States in different rock and roll bands. He's been studying jazz and the music of Django Reinhardt for over a decade, and is a longtime student of jazz.

CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTOur concern for the health and well-being of the planet is demonstrated by our active involvement in organizations dedicated to the promotion of ecologically responsible tourism and to the sharing of best practices. We are a proud member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators and a signatory of La Charte Bleue d’Armateurs de France, both of which bind us to follow the most stringent rules and regulations governing safety and environmental protection.

CLEAN SHIPSAbove and beyond participation in these organizations, we have taken the additional step of having all four of our sister ships certified “Clean Ship” by the French classification society, Bureau Veritas, one of the world’s major ship classification societies. This coveted and seldom-awarded certification recognizes that the PONANT fleet—from initial design and construction to seagoing operations—has adopted the most environmentally responsible materials, equipment, and management procedures possible.

The PonanT shiPsThe only ships in their class certified as “Clean Ships”
