Take the reading with you throughout the day. Continue to ponder the Word and allow your mind and heart to be filled with God rather than the constant clutter that seems to reside there. Take a specific phrase with you as the reading is concluded. Listen for the prompting of the Holy Spirit who may speak a word of comfort, encouragement or chastisement directly to your heart. Continue to ponder this message throughout your day. Let it lead you into deeper self-knowledge, conversion of heart, prayer and action. Renewed and refreshed we return next week to our continuing study of the weekly read-ings.

Weekly Reflection for the Year of Mercy Visiting the sick calls us to spend quality time with individuals in hospitals and institutions, as well as the homebound. A friendly visit may include conversation, reading services, offering to write a note or letter, and, of course, bringing the Eucharist. We can send flowers and cards to those who are infirm. We can also volunteer to drive patients to appoint-ments, run their errands, help out with chores, cook and deliver meals to the infirm, and as-sist full-time caregivers. The “infirm” among us may also be those who have recently lost a loved one, those who are lonely and feeling estranged from the community, those of spe-cial needs who feel socially isolated.

Weekly Bible Study

Looking back and moving forward As summer winds down and the new aca-demic year is upon us, we pause to offer re-minders and helpful hints for Bible study and reflection. Let us give ourselves permission at this juncture to be “takers.” Take yourself into the passage. Place your-self at the feet of Jesus as one who finds comfort, healing, enlightenment. Become a part of the crowd listening intently to the Lord, hanging on his every word. Respond to the Lord from this experience. Immerse yourself in the faith struggles and triumphs of the men and women of the Hebrew Scrip-tures (Old Testament) and of those who are in the presence of Jesus. Take to heart the senti-ments of the psalmists as they cry out in joy, anguish and gratitude. Take time to understand the passage. Con-sult footnotes and commentary to help put the passage in its proper context, enhancing its meaning. Take the opportunity to “sleep on the Gos-pels” as the monastics tell us. Prepare your heart for receiving the proclaimed word, par-ticularly the Gospels, by reading the passage before bedtime. As the Sacred Word grace-fully penetrates the subconscious, hear and respond to the Word more deeply when it is proclaimed at Mass.

Humble yourself and you will find favor with God. Are you being called to become a priest or deacon, brother or sister? Humbly ask the Lord. If he answers “yes”, call Fr. Jeffrey Gubbiotti, Director of Vocations, Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas Seminary, Tel. 860-242-5573, email [email protected] or visit the web at www.vocationshartford.org. Join us at The Church of the Incarnation the First Friday of the month at 9:30am, Blessed Sacrament Chapel, for Voca-tions Holy Hour. Incarnation Choir Rehearsals will begin on Monday, September 12th at 7:30pm in the Choir Loft. We welcome new members. If interested, see Mrs. Niver in the Choir Loft after any of the Masses. We are also looking for new members for our Bell Choir. No musical experience is needed. See Mrs. Niver in the Choir Loft. We are blessed to have such a talented Director of Music and Choir!

Married couples observing their 25th, 50th, 60th & other special wedding an-niversaries in 2016 are invited to at-tend the Archdiocesan Anniversary Mass on Sun., October 16th, 2pm at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hart-ford. Archbishop Blair will be the main celebrant. Mass will include the renewal of marriage vows, followed by a simple reception & photo opportunity with Archbishop Blair. Family members & friends are invited. Call Audrey/Teri at (860) 529-2533 to RSVP.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: The Passion of St. John the Baptist Friday: First Friday Saturday: St. Gregory the Great; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Perhaps the most familiar traditional symbol that identifies bishops is the crosier that they carry. We see the shepherd’s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ’s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is use-ful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indi-cating their ministry to the wider flock, while ab-bots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre-“popemobile” days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn’t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI intro-duced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II’s walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a “pastoral staff” rather than a crosier. Precisely be-cause the pope’s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks.

HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people—maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church—and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn’t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such “regular” folks. What is it that makes people seem so “regular”? Today’s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a differ-ence to people, and if we don’t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Conduct your affairs with humility and God will favor you (Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29). Psalm — God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor (Psalm 68). Second Reading — You have approached Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a). Gospel — When invited to dine, take the lowest place. Those who humble themselves will be exalted (Luke 14:1, 7-14). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Cor 2:1-5; Ps 119:97-102; Mk 6:17-29 Tuesday: 1 Cor 2:10b-16; Ps 145:8-14; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday: 1 Cor 3:1-9; Ps 33:12-15, 20-21; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday: 1 Cor 3:18-23; Ps 24:1bc-4ab, 5-6; Lk 5:1-11 Friday: 1 Cor 4:1-5; Ps 37:3-6, 27-28, 39-40; Lk 5:33-39 Saturday: 1 Cor 4:6b-15; Ps 145:17-21; Lk 6:1-5 Sunday: Wis 9:13-18b; Ps 90:3-6, 12-17; Phlm 9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33

Church of the Incarnation Women's Club

Installation -- Save the Date

This year, the Women's Club Installation Ceremony will be held as part of the an-nual Membership Tea at 7 pm on Thurs., September 15th, in Fr. Crawford Hall. Due to several resignations among the women previously elected to the 2016-18 executive committee, a brief business meeting will be held at the start of the even-ing to elect members to fill those vacancies. Immediately after the election, all of the women taking office for 2016-18 will be sworn in during a simple, brief cere-mony in Fr. Crawford Hall. This will be followed by refreshments & socializing. Women’s Club renewal letters will be mailed in August, and the full slate of mem-bers up for election to the executive committee will be listed in the September Bi-Lines.

Join Archbishop Leonard P. Blair to Honor First Responders at the 2016 Blue Mass Sunday, Sept. 11th at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 11am, Police, Fire, Emergency Responders, the Department of Corrections and other organizations who are in the service of protecting the public’s well-being, will participate in an opening procession on Farmington Avenue in Hartford on Sept. 11th. It will lead into the Cathedral, the mother Church of the Archdiocese, where Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will celebrate the Sunday Liturgy. While this annual event will once again honor the courage, generosity, personal sacrifice and life-saving com-petencies of first-responders, it will also be an occasion to reflect prayerfully on our unity as “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

F.Y.I. We have low gluten hosts available for those who require them. There is always a Minister of Holy Communion available at communion time in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Please come to the Sacristy and see either Fr. Moran or Toni prior to mass, to let them know you will be needing one. Thanks.
