Dear Parishioners, THUS SAYS THE LORD:
All you who are thirsty, come to the water!
Isaiah 55:1-3 Chapter 55 of the Book of Isaiah could be described as the Lord’s great invita on to grace: to freely receive from Him what we absolutely need for life, but what we ourselves cannot obtain and cannot earn. But as Chapters 53 and 54 remind us, it is the work, the labor of God Himself, accomplished in His Messiah’s suffering, death and resurrec on, that makes this offer of boundless, life-giving grace possible. Romans 8:35, 37-39 In this reading from Paul’s le er to the Roman community of believers, he reminds them and us what it means to believe in Christ: to trust that because He is God, the work of salva on He accomplished for us cannot be undone by any force or power or creature, in either the natural or the supernatural realm. Ma hew 14:13-21 According to the first-century Roman historian Josephus, Herod An pas imprisoned and then executed John the Bap st because he feared that John’s influence over the people might enable him to lead a rebellion. When Jesus hears of John’s execu on, His response is to withdraw from the people to a deserted place. Jesus had not come to take up where John le off, not residing and preaching in the desert and calling the people to return to the Lord, but to do something completely new. It is the mere news of Jesus’ whereabouts that draws the people to Him—because He is the Lord Himself come among them, and the only One Who can feed them with bread from heaven.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS
HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
“Thus says the Lord: All you who are thirsty, come to the wa-ter. Come without paying and without cost... Heed me and you shall eat well. You who have no money, come receive grain and eat. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlas ng covenant.”
During the hot days of summer we are constantly looking for relief. A refreshing drink, a cool breeze, a pool or lake, a break from oppression and toil. Water is o en the most welcome solu on.
It was the water of bap sm which gave us new life, and allowed us to live the covenant the Lord made with His people. Water was a constant in the bible from crea on, the flood, the Red Sea, and even the side of Jesus on Calvary.
It is the water of grace which enables us to have a personal rela onship with Jesus Christ. When we celebrate the sacraments, every me we receive the Eucharist, we are touched by God’s saving grace. Maybe it is worth a minute to ask the Lord to help me appreciate the great gi He offers me constantly.
Remember this spring when the virus reminded us to wash our hands for twenty seconds? It was not only a precau on, but a remedy. May we “come to the water’ and be renewed.

THE RINGING OF THE BELLS Tradi onally church bells ring as a call to unite us in prayer. Our church bells ring at 12 Noon and 6PM. Take a moment to bow your head and thank God for all the blessings he has poured upon us. Prayers typically prayed are the Angelus and the Our Father. Our church is also open 6AM to 4PM for personal
prayer. Spend some me in God’s presence and rest in His loving care.
THE ANGELUS The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy Word. Hail Mary... And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary... Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarna on of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrec on, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
