HILLSBOROUGH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
102 West Tryon Street Post Office Box 717 Hillsborough, NC 27278 (919) 732-3131 (Office) (919) 644-1185 Dr. Robert Brizendine, Pastor [email protected] www.hillsboroughpres.org
The Church Mouse August, 2016
Dear Friends,
Hillsborough Presbyterian Church has had twenty-five Ministers serve in its first 200 years. John Knox
Witherspoon was the first Minister. The shortest tenure was our second Minister, Samuel Joseph Price, who served
1834-1835. The longest tenure was that of Dr. Harvey Smith Bradshaw, who served the church at two different
times, for a total of thirty-nine years. His first pastorate was for six years, and then, he came back once more to stay
thirty-three years. Dr. Bradshaw was the third and last minister of the Church to be buried in the Old Town
Cemetery adjoining the church. He also served as Minister of New Hope Presbyterian Church.
Hillsborough Presbyterian Church and New Hope Presbyterian Church shared a Minister for many years.
The last Minister we shared was Dr. Samuel Wilds DuBose, Jr. This yoked relationship ended in 1945. Dr. DuBose
earned his Ph.D at Duke University and later moved to Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia to become
Professor of Bible.
In recognition of this historic connection between our congregations, we have scheduled a Pulpit Exchange
on August 14. New Hope Presbyterian Church will be celebrating its 260th anniversary at Homecoming on August
28, and Hillsborough Presbyterian Church will be celebrating our 200th anniversary on September 25. I will be
preaching at New Hope on August 14, and the Rev. Kerri Hefner will be preaching at HPC on that day. We continue
to share together each year with a joint service on Ash Wednesday.
The demolition for our Renovation Project has begun, and the projected completion date is early March,
2017. During the next few months, we will have reduced space available for meetings and programs, and we will
need to be flexible. We have reached out to the Museum next door about using the room upstairs for Sunday School
this fall. Weaver St. Market has offered us their conference room for session meetings. We will be having VBS at
the Commons Pavilion at Cornwallis Hills. Book Club will meet in the homes of members.
We are planning a special celebration of our 200th anniversary on September 25. Our worship service will
begin at 10:00 AM on that day. We have a number of special guests who will be sharing reflections about our
history. We will have a service of worship with wonderful music, culminating in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper,
using the silver service from 1884.
Following our worship on September 25, we will move to New Hope Camp and Conference Center for a
catered lunch at 12:30 PM. The meal will reflect what our forebears may have eaten 200 years ago. The menu
includes grilled chicken, potato salad, salad, potato wedges, black-eyed peas, and rolls. Church members will be
providing pies for dessert. The cost of the lunch is $13 for adults, and $8.50 for children.
We are ordering commemorative plates which have the beautiful photo of “HPC in snow” taken by Alex
Armstrong. Plates are $25 each and the deadline for ordering is August 7. Contact Katherine Cathey or the church
office. During lunch at New Hope, we will be showing the video which Beth Ely is putting together for our 200 th
anniversary. If you would like to order a copy of the video, they are $15 for a standard DVD and $20 for Blu-Ray.
Contact the church office by September 1 to order the video. We need to give New Hope a head-count for the
catered lunch, so please make your reservations for lunch by contacting the church office by September 1. These are
exciting times in the life of our church!

OCIM UPDATE
Feed our Neighbors this Summer.
Continue to fill our OCIM
food basket each month.
HPC has committed to giving 200 pounds of food
each month to commemorate our 200th
anniversary.
But there are real reasons why we need to support
OCIM food pantry this summer as well.
School is out: students who normally get
free or reduced lunch and breakfast at school
are no longer getting it. Their parents’
income did not change; but their needs did.
School employees like teacher assistants,
bus drivers, and cafeteria workers do not
earn money in the summer. Each summer,
OCIM gets more requests for food from
these populations.
Donations generally drop in the summer
because people who give regularly during
the year are away and out of their routine.
Church attendance drops, which then
impacts food brought to the food pantry.
As we celebrate our anniversary, let us share our
abundance with those who might otherwise go
hungry.
Jane McIver,
Mission Commission

Book Club News!
Book Club meets one
Sunday evening most
months of the year at
7:00. Please join us for
discussion of any or all
of these upcoming
selections! Refreshments will be served, and
visitors and guests are always welcome.
On August 14th
we will meet at Robin
Bedingfield’s home to discuss our summer
selection, The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk
Kidd “…a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest
for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the
world. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in
early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life
beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within
the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s
daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she
is meant to do something large in the world, but she
is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s
eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of
ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid.
We follow their remarkable journeys over the next
thirty five years… Inspired by the historical figure
of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to
flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her
characters, both real and invented… a triumph of
storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a
devastating wound in American history, through
women whose struggles for liberation,
empowerment, and expression will leave no reader
unmoved.”(amazon.com) Call Robin (919-732-
6369) for directions.
September’s selection is Caleb's Crossing: A
Novel by Geraldine Brooks “Bethia Mayfield is a
restless and curious young woman growing up in
Martha's vineyard in the 1660s amid a small band
of pioneering English Puritans. At age twelve, she
meets Caleb, the young son of a chieftain, and the
two forge a secret bond that draws each into the
alien world of the other. Bethia's father is a
Calvinist minister who seeks to convert the native
Wampanoag, and Caleb becomes a prize in the
contest between old ways and new, eventually
becoming the first Native American graduate of
Harvard College. Inspired by a true story and
narrated by the irresistible Bethia, Caleb’s
Crossing brilliantly captures the triumphs and
turmoil of two brave, openhearted spirits who risk
everything in a search for knowledge at a time of
superstition and ignorance.”(amazon.com)
And October’s selection is An Indigenous People’s
History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-
Ortiz
2015 Recipient of the American Book Award
The first history of the United States told from the
perspective of indigenous peoples
“Today in the United States, there are more than
five hundred federally recognized Indigenous
nations comprising nearly three million people,
descendants of the fifteen million Native people who
once inhabited this land. The centuries-long
genocidal program of the US settler-colonial
regimen has largely been omitted from history…”

SUNSET GAP REPORT
The Hillsborough Presbyterian Church team worked
from July 4 – 8, 2016.
The house at one time belonged to Jimmy’s brother
and his wife Peggy. We met Peggy in March and
she was so pleased we were fixing her home. She
called several friends to tell them about us and the
future repairs. Sadly, Peggy died in April of this
year and the house transferred to their daughter,
Sandy.
Sandy stopped by a couple of times and she is a
sweet person. She wrote us a long and thoughtful
Thank You card. That means a lot to all of us.
We repaired, taped, and mudded the sheetrock in
the kitchen. It was painted three times and we put
up new crown molding. We repaired, taped, and
mudded the sheetrock in the bathroom ceiling. We
gave the ceiling two coats of paint. In one bedroom,
we put up new sheetrock in the ceiling. We mudded,
taped, and put up a textured ceiling. We painted the
ceiling twice and put up crown molding. We
installed new sheetrock in the hallway ceiling.
Again, we taped and mudded and applied two coats
of paint.
We put new siding on the north side which included
new framing. We put up new trim board on all
corners. We installed new gable vents on the east
and west side. We also installed new soffits. Then
we gave the entire house two coats of paint.
We observed a major drainage problem and
installed a catchment basin and corrugated drainage
pipe to take the water away from the house.
We applied Kool-seal on most of the roof. We
would have finished but Mother Nature didn’t
cooperate.
We installed a new electrical fixture for the
backdoor flood light.
We did lots and lots of cleaning. We repaired and
cleaned the kitchen floor.
Martin, once again, assisted us and what a great
support person he is for us. We really enjoyed his
company and the valuable guidance that he
provides. Matt also helped us obtain materials.
We accomplished all of this work with only nine
people. Bob Brizendine, Joe Crane, Cathy Ely,
Cynthia Latta, Karoline Mathewson, Jim
Mathewson, Sam Nesbit, Grayson Parker, and
James Watts.
