Transformation "Transformed by Christ, we will tell the world about Christ, teach the world about Christ and touch the world for Christ so that the whole world will know the love of Christ." So goes the mission statement for First United Methodist Church of Maryville. The focus of this statement, for many of us who live with the mission daily, has been on the three key words, tell, teach, touch. While these words are key, the most significant word is the first word, transformed. The reason I say this is because in order for the tell, teach and touch part of the mission to have any power, the transformation by Christ must occur first. It is only those who have been transformed by Christ who have the passion, power, and perseverance to tell, teach and touch the world in way that can make a real impact for Christ. Here is the good news, however. The transformation can occur while one is engaged in the telling, the teaching and the touching the world. For example, a person may have a heart for helping people and be involved in one of the many outreach efforts sponsored by the church - Welcome Table, Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Good Neighbors, Recovery at Maryville. Perhaps their motivation is spurred by innate compassion. However, while involved in the ministry, the Holy Spirit begins to work on their heart and the transformation occurs. They begin to realize that their motivation has more to do with the presence of Christ in their life rather than just an innate desire to do good. This is transformation. With the transformation comes the desire to share the Good News of Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection. My prayer is that the transformation continue throughout the community of faith known as FUMC of Maryville. Will you join me in this prayer? Come, Holy Spirit, come! Transformation

"Transformed by Christ, we will tell the world about Christ, teach the

world about Christ and touch the world for Christ so that the whole

world will know the love of Christ." So goes the mission statement

for First United Methodist Church of Maryville.

The focus of this statement, for many of us who live with the mission

daily, has been on the three key words, tell, teach, touch. While

these words are key, the most significant word is the first word,

transformed. The reason I say this is because in order for the tell, teach and touch part of the mission to have any power, the

transformation by Christ must occur first.

It is only those who have been transformed by Christ who have the

passion, power, and perseverance to tell, teach and touch the world in way that can make a real impact for Christ. Here is the good news,

however. The transformation can occur while one is engaged in the

telling, the teaching and the touching the world.

For example, a person may have a heart for helping people and be

involved in one of the many outreach efforts sponsored by the church - Welcome Table, Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Good

Neighbors, Recovery at Maryville. Perhaps their motivation is spurred

by innate compassion. However, while involved in the ministry, the

Holy Spirit begins to work on their heart and the transformation

occurs. They begin to realize that their motivation has more to do with the presence of Christ in their life rather than just an innate

desire to do good. This is transformation. With the transformation

comes the desire to share the Good News of Jesus' birth, life, death

and resurrection.

My prayer is that the transformation continue throughout the

community of faith known as FUMC of Maryville. Will you join me in

this prayer? Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Grace and Peace,

Larry

Fill the buckets The Holston Conference is asking for your help with this year’s Hands-on Mission Project. For the next few weeks you can bring items to fill food buckets for Liberia. The Maryville District has been asked to put together 250 of them by Annual Conference which begins June 9th. The total cost for the items in each bucket is about $20 each with another $5 needed for packing and

shipping each bucket. Unlike school supplies, food items do have expiration dates. Be sure and check the dates and make sure they do not expire until 2014 in order to cover transport time and having a useful life for the people of Liberia.

Items needed for each bucket: 1—5lb. Bag sugar 1—2 lb. Bag rice

1—2 lb. Bag dried beans 2 cans (total) meat: ham, spam, or tuna

1 box powdered milk (9oz. or less) 1 box oatmeal (small—18 oz.)

1 bottle cooking oil (48 oz. or less) If you prefer to pay the $25 for the bucket and let us do the

shopping, make checks to 1st UMC.

Take me out to the ball game!

The threat of thunderstorms and downpours didn’t keep this dedicated group of Young Adults from taking in a Smokies game last Friday. The outing was just one of several planned for the next couple of months. In the end, the rain held off and it was a great night to be at the ballpark. However, Tennessee didn’t pull off a win, losing to Birmingham 4 to 5.

Lakeside fun and fellowship

Next month YOU are invited to join the Young Adults for a weekend relaxing on the shores of Tellico Lake. The camping weekend is set for June 21st and 22nd. This will be a great time to have a little fun, relax and get to know the Young Adults of 1st UMC. You can bring a tent or enjoy the comforts of the cabin that weekend. If you are interested in this outing please contact Asa (information in blue box above) or register online at www.fumc-maryville.org.

Artful additions It is hard not to notice the beautiful pieces of artwork lining the hallways of 1st UMC. From paintings, to needleart and photographs, this program remains a great

way to show of the talents of people in the church and community. On Tuesday, May 21st (at 1:30 pm), it will once again be time to switch out the art work. If you have artwork that you would like to see displayed, please contact Jan Jennings at 977-1389.

Stitches in time Quilters are also working to display their skills For the last couple of months you’ve probably had a chance to see the beautiful quilts hanging in Asbury Hall. Laurie Byrne said response to the quilts has been “terrific.” If you have one or more quilts you would like to display for the next couple of months, please bring them to Asbury Hall on Wednesday, May 22nd at 1:30 pm. Be sure and include your name and contact information on each quilt. Those of you currently displaying quilts can pick them up on the same day. If you have a quilt to leave or pick up and can’t be there on the 22nd please contact Laurie Byrne at 292-5910 to make other arrangements.

Children ‘s Corner While children are excited about the school year coming to an end, chances are they are equally excited about Vacation Bible School.

Here at 1st UMC, the Kingdom will rock and children will learn to “stand strong for God” as characters like Chadder the Chipmunk and Pip the Mouse guide them through a world where God’s love and wisdom abound! This year, Tom Toombs (who performed at this year’s RezKidz event in Gatlinburg) will join the epic adventure as he brings his comedy, magic and passion to Vacation Bible School. We want this to be a fantastic few days, so be sure and join in on the fun and invite your friends!

Promotion Sunday reminder Coming up this Sunday, the 6th graders of the church will be “promoted” so they can become part of the Youth Group this summer. Then, a couple of months later, the rest of the children will join in on Promotion Sunday which is set for Sunday, July 28th. This will allow the Children’s Ministry team extra time to plan a special event for the big day.

If you need more information on any of these Children’s ministries activities please contact Denise

Johns: [email protected]

Volunteers still needed! If you have a passion for serving the children of the church and community please consider volunteering with Vacation Bible School. There are many ways you can lend your time and talents. More information is available online at www.fumc-maryville.org or you can contact Denise Johns at 865-982-1273.

Making a joyful noise! The preschool children will be singing this Sunday at the Crossing service at 10:30. This past Sunday the children brought joy to the congregation as they sang in the Traditional service. What a special treat to see these precious little members of our church joining in worship through song.

Asking for donations The VBS program is in need of clean, empty, 16 oz. plastic water bottles for a craft project. The plastic caps need to be on top of them. If you have some bottles you would like to donate, please bring them to Denise Johns or the church office.

Summer Sunday School Vacation Bible School is only part of the fun children will experience this summer at 1st UMC. The Elementary classes will be focusing on “friendship” through a variety of experiences like storytelling, cooking, computers, games, art, music, science and videos. Each class in grades K-6 will go to a different station each week for eight weeks. This exciting new program kicks off on June 2nd with friendship activities in Wesley Hall. Several caring volunteers are already involved in this special Sunday School time, but more are certainly welcome. Just contact Denise Johns for more information on how YOU can be a part of this “friendship” experience for the children!
