The very first day of February is Freedom Day. This holiday is one that many people are not aware of. This date represents liberty. It stands for freedom from slavery in America. It honors the fact that by Lincoln’s signing of a joint resolution between the U.S House and Senate it became the 13th amendment to the United States Constitution. Although Lincoln signed this bill on February 1, 1865, it was not ratified by all the states until later. Therefore, February 1st is recognized as National Freedom Day. On June 3, 1948, President Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day. While this is all well and good, this writer does understand why when one president signs a proclamation for a national observation, why then does another president more than a hundred years later sign a duplicate proclamation, stating the exact same thing? Do you think he was trying to reinvent the wheel, so to speak? Two presidents’ birthdays occur in February. Lincoln’s birthday is the 12th and George Washington’s is on the 22nd. Lincoln and I share the same birthday date, although there is a difference of a “few” years. The 14th is Valentine’s Day-when all the world thinks of love and romance. Hope your February was good and not too cold. See you in March!

Telephone Assurance Program Do you live alone? Are you recuperating from a hospital stay or rehab? Do you want to feel secure that someone is checking on you each day? If you answered Yes to any of these questions, then the Telephone Assurance Program can be of service to you. T.A.P. is a free service provided by Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and a group of Auxiliary Volunteers. T.A.P. is a daily person-to-person telephone call for individuals who have medical problems but wish to maintain their independence by remaining in their home. The participant who registers with the program provides a medical history and emergency contact or someone willing to consent to the “Good Neighbor Program.” The duties are to check on the well-being of the participant when the volun-teer is unable to contact you by telephone. A return call to the T.A.P. volunteer is re-quired by the good neighbor. State, county, and local police agencies participate in the program as an emergency back up in the event the participant and the good neighbor cannot be reached. If this occurs, an officer will make a check on the resi-dence and call the volunteer with information. All information received by T.A.P. is kept confidential. The participant will also receive a birthday card from the T.A.P. volunteers. If interested, please contact Janet McDonald at 410-942-2112
