( ( >< D ^ ^ INTRODUCTION In this summer camp, kids learn Chinese music, art, and dance taught by teachers all the way from Yunan, China. These activities are all fun yet education and will allow the children to practice speaking Chinese, explore Chinese culture, and just have fun in general! After the activities are over, there will be a performance to show what they have learned. RED, YELLOW, & BLUE The kids are split into different age groups. The youngest kids (age 5-7) are the little red flags, the kids in the middle (age 8-9) are the little yellow flags, and the oldest kids (age 10-12) are the little blue flags. INTRODUCTIONIn this summer camp, kids learn Chinese music, art, and dance taught by teachers all the way from Yunan, China. These activities are all fun yet education and will allow the children to practice speaking Chinese, explore Chinese culture, and just have fun in general! After the activities are over, there will be a performance to show what they have learned.

RED, YELLOW, & BLUEThe kids are split into different age groups. Ms. Chen:Ms. Chen is a music teacher from Yunan. She is from an arts school and teaches music to high school age kids. She also leads a children’s choir group so she has experience teaching younger kids too.

Some songs that she has taught the children to sing so far include ”床前明月光”, “家

乡”, “锄禾日当午” etc.

Ms. Chen says that the kids are very lively and that even though sometimes it seems like the children are just playing around, they are actually listening and work hard in class.

Ms. Li:Ms. Li is an art teacher from Yunan. She is from an arts school and teaches art. She teaches older children at the school but outside of school she has taught younger children.

In art class, the kids learn Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional painting, paper cutting, print and engraving, etc.

Ms. Li says teaching the kids is very fun and all of the kids are very cute. They’re all good students who enjoy art class.

Ms. Ge:Ms. Ge is a teacher from Yellow River Chinese School. At this summer camp, she teaches the children poetry, tongue twisters, and speech-making skills. She likes all of the children very much as she feels she is also still a child at heart.

Mr. Cao:Mr. Cao is a dance teacher form Yunan. He is from an arts school and teaches Chinese traditional dance, ballet, etc. to students age 10 to 20 Outside of the school, he has taught younger students.

The dance the kids are learning is a traditional Chinese dance that mimics the movements of an elephant. The arm represents the elephants long nose. He will also be teaching them more dances, including kungfu and children’s dance.

Mr. Cao says that sometimes it can be tiring since the kids are small but they all work very hard in class and are great students.

PLAYTIMETime to play!During breaks and lunchtime, the kids are allowed to go outside to play on the playground. Some run out to play while others choose to stay inside. The kids all have a lot of fun playing games together with each other and with the volunteers.

What they do:The volunteers choose to work either the morning or afternoon shift. The morning volunteers come in at around 8 to help the kids sign-in. The morning volunteers also help set up and serve lunch. In the afternoon, the afternoon volunteers arrive and take over the jobs of the morning volunteers.

The volunteers help the students and teachers in class. During breaks and lunch time, the volunteers will lead the children out to play and watch over them.

Lastly, the volunteers also take photos, make presentations, and write news articles about the summer camp.
