Buildings last because they rest upon solid foundations. Without a good
foundation, they may exist for a while, but they can’t stand for a long period
of time. Similarly, John Wesley understood that Methodism could begin and
remain vital when it is built upon a good foundation. But what makes a good
foundation?
Over the last two months, I have been meeting with the Confirmation class to
discuss what it means to be a Methodist; what are the distinguishing marks of
a Methodist. During the month of August I will share with you, “The Five Marks
of a Methodist”. In a world where words are cheap and character is counter-
feited, can we be assured we are giving ourselves to something real?
During August, we will also have a “Back Pack Blessing” and celebrate getting
back to Sunday school.
In September, we will welcome our new confirmands and I will follow up the
sermon series , “The Five Marks of a Methodist” with a new series on the “Five
Means of Grace”. We will look at prayer, scripture, Holy Communion, fasting,
and Christian conferencing as a pathway to encounter the healing, loving,
peaceful presence of God.
I think it is going to be an exciting fall at Hebron UMC. I hope you join us.
Blessings
Pete

Rev. Dr. Saneta Maiko, our new District Superintendent
I write this letter with excitement, conviction and hope that my call to serve North District at such a time as this one is God’s right timing. I want to thank our Bishop Julius Trimble, all our churches, leaders and pastors of our district for your faithfulness and service of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our friend Rev. Larry Whitehead deserves thanks and appreciation of the wonderful work he has done for our district. A little bit about me, originally from Kenya, I am the middle child of a family of nine adult children (4 sisters and 4 brothers). I have been married for 18 years to Beatrice (a microbiologist) and blessed with four children (3 daughters and a son). I am thankful to God for her and the children God has given us. We have made Mishawaka/Granger our new home as I get to know you and fellowship with you in the months to come. I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in December of 1991. I have been a pastor for 22 years and been involved in ministry in Kenya (4 years) and in Indiana (18 years). I served as a superintendent pastor in Kenya before I came to the United States for graduate studies. I have been associated with North UMC, Indianapolis, Christ UMC, Greenwood, St. Joseph UMC, Fort Wayne, Zion UMC, Butler, Meese Chapel UMC, Auburn Fishers UMC, Fishers, and Milledgeville UMC, Lebanon since 2001. Most recently I have been working with Indiana University Health conducting clinical research on cancer patients and their families. I have also recently served the Indiana Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. I am convinced that the Lord has anointed and called me “…to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” Isaiah 61:1. I am excited that we are the church to influence the conditions in which people live (social determinants of health) through disciple-making and world transformation. Three questions to ask:
What future do we want for our family, our church, and our community?
What legacy do we want to leave for our family, our church, and our community?
What should you do to influence others to commit to faith in making disciples that make disciples and continues to make disciples for the transformation of the world?
I come to you as a servant with hopes that we can get to know each other and establish strong trusting relationships, discern good ways to identify and appoint pastors to churches, be present and visible to you and to our communities, and be able to promote clergy effectiveness and accountability. I look forward to you all holding me ac-countable as I hold you accountable in the making disciples of Jesus Christ process. I am here for you and your churches as we advance God’s Great Commission, the Bishop and cabinet’s strategy in our North District. Stay blessed and stay tuned! Rev. Dr. Saneta Maikod
