    The Teacher

ByLeilaDurkinFor the past 6months I have been drivingDanny to and from ourhouse, as he

    continuestoworkonarestorationproject.Initially,wespentmostofthedriveinsilence-

unlessIhadaquestion, whichhewouldanswerpolitely, butwithfewwords.Aswequietlydrove along, Iwould think about his Amish culture, weighing the pros and consof his

lifestyle compared tomine. The difference in our energy levelswas acutely evident. I

raced, spun and rushed - always a bit late. He maintained the same pace, slow and

methodical no matter how pressing the day might be. I couldnt help but notice the

    contrast.Onemorningheaskedmetomeethisfamily.Iwasequallyhumbledandflattered.

His wife and three young daughters had been awaiting my visit. They all had on their

    bonnetsandgreetedmewithsweetnessandcuriosity.

    AtthattimetheSundayservicewasbeingheldattheirhouse.Thelivingroomhad

    beencleared,therewasbleachertypeseatingsetupalongthefarwall.Thesimplicityof

their home struckme as a fine example of having enough to be content. I did notice apotholderIhadgiventhempinnedtothewallasdecoration.Intheirhouse,Ifelttoolarge

    andtooloud.ItwasaverytouchingexperienceasIabsorbedthebeautyoftheirsimplicity.

There is the saying, when you are ready, your teacher will appear. For years I

assumedaphysicalguruofsome sortwouldappear - a very literal interpretation. Only

    recentlydid Ibegintohaveadifferentunderstandingofwhat thatmeans.Teachersareeverywhere-notonlyintheformofGurus,Rinpochesandpreachers-butwiththepeople

    andeventsineverydaylife.Translated- tome,itmeansthatwhenIamready,openandreceptive,tolearningfromthesemoments-Ido.So,Dannyinhissimplicityandquietness

    becameoneofmyteachers.
