Beat The Spring Rush...Originality, Beauty & Value
The Lowlands farm is a historic area with wetlands that housed many species of animals and sometimes even swans. Today, there is a historic barn still standing and the remains of a house on the property. I have traced the farm back as far as 1759 by a land grant from Lord Fairfax. Lowlands Farm has been bought and passed on through many generations of kids or family.
Currently the barn and farm are owned by Loudoun County Parks & Recreation. This happened from a proffer by a builder/developer in 2006. ( a proffer is when a developer gives something to the government planners in exchange for rights to develop the property). This usually translates to cut down trees and destroy wildlife habitat and stream buffers. The proffer states that the property must be preserved and made into a passive park (no ball fields, motorized vehicles, or commuter parking lots).
I am trying to get someone to take responsibility to protect the Wetlands and save the barn. This barn and other small buildings have been here since before 1853. I am doing this because I live next to the barn and enjoy looking at it and the Wetlands every day. The problem is that Parks & Rec are not fixing the barn and the barn is deteriorating and the areas around it are, too.
I have gone through many steps to preserve the barn. I have gotten people’s signatures of who wants to see it restored. I have researched old articles, maps, books, and documents at the Balch Library. I have studied old pictures and drawings from 1853 to find where the farm house was because it is no longer standing. However, I have found the foundation.
I have sent emails, made phone calls, and spoken to several people and organizations to find someone responsible. I have contacted the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, Loudoun County Parks & Recreation Department, Northern
Virginia Regional Park Authority, Piedmont Environmental Council, and the Loudoun Heritage Commission.
The Wetlands next to the barn have historical significance because it was there before the barn on many old maps of Brambleton. It houses many species of animals like snakes, fish, turtles, frogs, toads, geese, deer, foxes, beavers, and many bird species.
The current status of the property and barn seem to be a mystery. In 2010, the property was supposed to be conveyed to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority to become part of Beaverdam Reservoir Park. This did not happen, so it is still the property of Loudoun County Parks & Rec. However, as you can see, the barn is being neglected and deteriorating. Loudoun County Parks & Rec said that they would come out and repair the roof, but that did not happen. All they did was put up “no trespassing” signs.
At this time I have the Piedmont Environmental Council and the Loudoun Heritage Commission looking into forcing Loudoun County Parks & Rec to do something through a new County ordinance called “Demolition by Neglect”. This is supposed to protect historic properties from deteriorating because no one takes care of them.
My next step is to give this presentation before the new Board of Supervisors in hope that they will force some action to be taken.
Please help support my efforts to restore the historic Lowlands Farm. If you are interested in starting and joining a barn preservation committee (not currently chartered by the HOA) please contact me at: [email protected]

PRESS RELEASE
4th Annual Tommy’s Run for a Reason Sunday, May 20th 2012
ALGONKIAN REGIONAL PARK, Sterling VA
Thomas was a happy and wonderful child. At the age of 2, Tommy went to sleep and never woke up. We still do not know why. Since Tommy was over the age of one year; his passing is not considered Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Instead, it belongs to a lesser-known category, Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood (SUDC) that occurs when an apparently healthy child beyond the age of 12 months dies without warning and without a known cause found after a thorough investigation. Tommy’s Run for a Reason is in memory of Tommy to raise awareness for SUDC and help bring about a future where no family ever has to experience SUDC again. The 4th Annual Tommy’s Run For A Reason will take place on Sunday, May 20th 2012, at Algonkian Regional Park in Sterling, VA. It will include a 5K Run and 2K Fitness Walk. The event is catered towards families. Children’s activities include pony rides, face painting, crafts and games. An extensive raffle and silent auction will be held that includes plane tickets, Disney World Tickets, gift cards, gift bags, golf outings and much more. A catered BBQ lunch will be served. Registration opens at 9 am, 5K Race starts at 10:15, 2K Family Fun Walk begins at 10:30. Cost is $30 per adult and $5 for children under 10. All proceeds directly benefit the SUDC Program which was created in 2001 as part of the CJ Foundation for SIDS. It is the only program in the world devoted solely to supporting families affected by SUDC and advocating for SUDC research to find answers. While The SUDC Program is making progress, much work remains ahead. Contact: Beth Marshall Telephone: 703-220-3730 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.run4tommy.com
A Warm Welcome to all our new neighbors to Martin’s Chase!
There are many improvements and activities to report on this Spring. Summer is just around the corner, so I’ll start with the Pool - We look forward to a lot of fun activities, including extended pool hours on special dates throughout the Summer. Also, you should be happy to hear we will be ordering additional chairs, tables and umbrellas for the 2012 Summer Pool Season. As our neighborhood has grown by leaps and bounds since last Summer, the Facilities Committee will be sending a query to all neighbors to get feedback on a few items regarding the pool, to highlight a few: In the years past we have had a late opening of the pool during weekdays until school was out - then extended the opening past Labor Day. We have also had swim lessons for the Children **Free of Charge** as part of our contract with High Sierra. We want your feedback! Look for the query to be sent to your home within the next few weeks so we can gain a Community quorum.
Walking Path Status: Bids have been requested, Lennar will be doing another walk-thru with the contractors and meet with the county. They do not have an exact date but expect to start within the next 60 days.
Bike Rack - We will be installing a Bike Rack by the pool. This should be in place in time for the Pool Opening.
Common Area Parking Spaces - Just a friendly reminder not to
block Homeowner mailboxes at any time.
Community Gas Grill - currently the gas grill is still running on propane. A conversion kit has been ordered to run a direct gas line.
If you've noticed some Survey equipment and flags in the areas behind Mill Quarter and the area between Brickshire and Reservoir Road it's for a rain garden which is required by the County. The Rain Garden is designed for better water quality for the Aquifer. The Rain Garden creates better water quality for the community. The following two links will explain the Aquifer and Rain Garden.

CULTURAL CORNERCinco De Mayo
The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances, and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16.
History of Cinco de Mayo: Battle of Puebla
In 1861 Mexican Benito Juárez (1806-1872) became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory.
Certain that success would come swiftly, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez (1814-1892) set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. President
Juárez rounded up a rag-tag force of 2,000 loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862), the vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans prepared for the French assault. On May 5, 1862, Lorencez drew his army of 6,000 well prepared troops, before the city of Puebla. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers. Fewer than 100 Mexicans had been killed in the clash.
Unfortunately, the victory was short lived. Upon hearing the bad news, Napoleon III had found an excuse to send more troops overseas to try and invade Mexico again. 30,000 more troops and a full year later, the French were eventually able to depose the Mexican army and take over Mexico City. By this time, the American Civil War now over, the U.S. began to provide more assistance to Mexico to expel the French. So despite the eventual French invasion of Mexico City, Cinco de Mayo honors the bravery and victory of General Zaragoza's smaller, outnumbered militia at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
Notes from CMC......1- Please use proper etiquette in the Club House Gym. We ask that you do not drop weights after use. Not only does this severally impact the drywall and structure on the main level it also distrupts the card reader system. The vibration from the weights cause the power supply to dislocate. 2-CMC offers two programs for residents to take advantage of in the community. Associa Advantage and Associerge. Please check Facebook, CMC website and your email for additional info.3-Spring is approaching and this is a great time to get your lawns healthy and green. Spring also promotes growth and lawn repair.
Thank you,Jimmy Hames

Our book club is growing! Close to a dozen of us gathered in March at Mary Krygiel's lovely home to enjoy wine, appetizers and a thought-provoking discussion of The Hunger Games. Several in the group met a week later for dinner and to see The Hunger Games at the theater in Brambleton.
Our next meeting will be on April 24 at 7:00, at Laurie Kelly's house. The address is 41965 Donnington Place. For that meeting we will be reading Those Who Save Us, by Jenna Blum. Below is the Amazon synopsis of the book:
For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota.
Trudy's sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald. Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother's life. Combining a passionate, doomed love story, a vivid evocation of life during the war, and a poignant mother/daughter drama, Those Who Save Us is a profound exploration of what we endure to survive and the legacy of shame.
Happy reading and we look forward to seeing you in April! If you have questions please contact Nancy Graham [email protected].
