Liturgical Ministers
Dear Friends in Christ,
1) Just one last reminder to come and join us for a time of food and prayer for the intention of Christian Unity! It's
held on Monday, Jan 20 at St. Patrick, with a potluck at 5pm and prayer at 6:30pm.
2) Next week includes the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision which legalized abortion. On Wednesday,
January 22, the U.S. Bishops call upon the faithful to pray and even fast, if possible, for the intention of the legal
protection of unborn children. Please join in this spiritual effort. This weekend's readings are a good reminder of
the value and dignity of every human life, including those not yet born. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah revealed his belief that
God "formed me as his servant in the womb." The Gospel tells us more about John the Baptist, who once leaped in his mother's
womb when Mary visited Elizabeth. Thus the word of God teaches that the womb is a sacred space where the identity and vocation
of the human person is already unfolding. God knows and has a plan for every human life. That plan ultimately is all about seeing him
and possessing a share in his life in heaven. But it also is a plan that involves life before heaven, for the sake of heaven and the sake of
others. We are called to be stewards of human life, not gods who rule over it. There are so many ways that we have become
comfortable in our modern culture with exercising a god-like rule over life; this always winds up involving death. An example would
be the practice of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which I have even heard practicing Catholics celebrate as a positive option for couples
experiencing infertility. Without downplaying the pain of that struggle, we still need to open our eyes to the fact that several embryos
(human lives!) are brought into being through each IVF treatment, and the most healthy or desirable one(s) implanted, while the
lesser ones are destroyed or frozen. It is like a mini-eugenics program every time. No one would agree to do this with triplets who
were already born, but we turn a blind eye to this reality when it comes to the question of human persons in a much earlier stage of
development. When we play like gods with life, we always promote death instead. This is not to say that people born through IVF are
bad or wrong--on the contrary, God loves them, calls them, and has a plan for them. It is to say that we are also called to hear his
voice and follow his plan, trusting in his way. Like Isaiah, you were formed in the womb to be the servant of the Lord. Like John the
Baptist, you stirred in your mother's womb when you heard voices you recognized. God's guidance and call did not stop when you
were born, though! It continues every day. He calls you first of all to himself, to the life of heaven. He calls you to share in his life
already on earth. Your vocation began before you were born (and even, we can say, before you were conceived, in the foresight of
God!) How good to know that life is not just random. May we together carry our crosses with faithfulness so that we may reach our
heavenly calling.
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Nick
