It is suggested (but not necessary at this time) that donations no longer be put in plastic bags but recycla-ble bags which will then be used at the pantries.

PASTOR’S NOTE

Peter’s Profession of Faith

It is normal to ask someone their opinion about something. Whether it is about a certain food, beverage, music, television show, or even talk-ing politics, people all have different answers and opinions.

This weekend, we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary

Time and the readings focus on faith. In the first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, we read how a faithful servant of God is entrusted with the power to steer the kingdom to-ward peace. In the Gospel from St. Matthew, Jesus heads to Caesarea Philippi and asks his disciples “Who do people say that I am?” Some say Elijah, some say John the Baptist. It is Peter who gives the correct an-swer; Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus deeply trusts Peter to hold not only the key to God’s house, but the key to God’s heart and proclaims him as the rock up-on whom he will build his church. Jesus made the prom-ise to Peter and the other disciples giving him authority. We can trust them and their successors to help us under-stand who Jesus is, and how to live as his disciples.

How prepared are we to be disciples upon whom Christ builds his church? The Church’s true foundation is Christ himself.

As we prepare to go back to school, work or maybe even continue to stay at home as we still go through the Covid-19 pandemic and adjusting our routine and new measures, let us see how we can dig deep into getting to know Jesus, even amongst the daily stress and fears that we may encounter.

Fr. Matthew Hawkins

For the past three weeks in this space I have been discussing the concept of “synodality”. Pope Fran-cis has said that “The church must be synodal, characterized by ‘walking together’ as the pilgrim people of God.” The pontiff said that the Church has to listen to all voices -- Catholic or not. He added

that “the Church is a communion; all Catholics are re-sponsible for the life and mission of the Church although each person has been given different gifts and roles by the Holy Spirit.” Synodality is based on the baptismal gifts and responsibilities of each Catholic.

As I pointed out last week, parish councils (pastoral coun-cils and finance councils) are church exercises in syn-odality. Other examples include diocesan presbyterial councils, national bishops’ conferences, regional councils of bishops, the synods of bishops of the Eastern Catholic churches, the World Synod of Bishops and ecumenical councils such as Vatican II.

If we focus our attention on parish pastoral councils we will begin to understand why it is important for the laity to be involved in pastoral planning. A study titled Synodality in the Life and Mission of the Church, by the International Theological Commission in the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (2018) explains why “the par-ticipation of the lay faithful is essential.” The document says, “They are the vast majority of the people of God. There is much to learn from their participation in the vari-ous expressions of the life and mission of the ecclesial

community, in popular piety and in pastoral work as a whole, as well as in their specific competence in the vari-ous spheres of cultural and social life.”

The document makes clear that any process of church discernment should begin with a consultation of the laity. This, in turn, requires that the laity must be properly edu-cated and formed in the liturgy and teaching of the Catho-lic Church. One cannot, after all, offer what one does not have.

The document emphasizes that effectiveness in consult-ing the laity will require overcoming “a clerical mentality that risks keeping [the laity] at the margins of church life”. To bring the laity in from the margins requires “that lay-men and laywomen be given more opportunities for edu-cation in the faith and more spaces in the church where they can learn to express themselves within the discourse of the [Catholic] church.”

This also means that parish councils must be centers of listening and dialogue with all of the parishioners, not simply with an elite group, clique, or faction within the par-ish. This is to be done in the Eucharistic spirit of com-munion which brings us together as one in the Body of Christ. “All church members must be better educated in the spirituality of communion and the practice of listening, dialogue and communal discernment,” the document says.

This is how we should understand synodality and it is how we should understand the role of parish councils in the life of the parish.

Fr. David Taylor

Catholic Schools A Beacon of Hope

Some of you may not be aware that your priests now serve in three Catholic schools. St Bede, St. Benedict the Moor and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy. These three schools are a part of our two parishes. They are a real blessing to the communities which

we serve. The schools ,although somewhat different, are part of the Church’s ministry of service, and of sharing the faith with others.

Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy, a merger of the former Holy Rosary School and St James School ,serve primarily the communities of the East End. I served as pastor of Holy Rosary school until the merger in 2010. The Sisters of St. Joseph served Holy Rosary school from its beginning until the early nineties. The Sisters of Chari-ty historically served in St James until the last few years. The school is served by the Extra Mile Educational Foun-dation. Mrs. Stephanie Michael is principal of STBCA.

St Benedict the Moor School has a long history of service in the Hill District. The School was formerly housed in the Webster Avenue Campus of St. Benedict the Moor Par-ish. It is now located in the former Vann school building in the Hill. The school was historically served by the Sis-ters of St. Joseph from Baden. Some of the sisters still live on the parish campus. The school is served by the Extra Mile Educational Foundation. The principal is Mrs. Audrey Bowser.

Most recently I have had the opportunity to serve at St. Bede School in Point Breeze. When I first came to Home-wood, the Sisters of St Joseph were serving in the school. Holy Rosary partnered with St. Bede in Summer pro-grams for the students. Today St Bede serves many stu-dents in the East End Communities. The school recently opened a Stream Lab that enhances the educational pro-gram. Sr. Daniela Bronka is principal of St. Bede’s.

We pray for our schools as they prepare for a new chal-lenge under real challenging circumstances. Let’s do eve-rything we can to support them.
