MARCH 15, 2015 — THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 3

Briefs From Father McMahon

“We are not called upon to do all the good that is possible, but only that which we can do.” - St. Mother Theodore Guerin I think that this quote from Mother Guerin is an appropriate one as we arrive at this Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday: literally, “Be Joyful Sunday” because we have made it halfway through the season of Lent. How has Lent been for you? The Gospel today speaks a lot about seeing and darkness and light. What do you see differently this Lent? Do you see your salvation as a gift brought about by and through God’s saving grace? Do you have faith in that? Do you see God’s eternal love in that? Jesus was lifted up high for our life, healing and salvation. Pope Francis, in his apostolic exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, encourages Christians “to embark on a journey of faith and evangelization marked by joy. “…Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew.” That is a joyful message and one that we are called to receive and share as a people of faith who raise one another to be more faithful and charitable. I truly believe that we can all become more devoted and close to God in this holy season. There is still time. Embrace the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. By letting go we can open ourselves to receive the Lord. As we look ahead to Holy Week please make note of the Easter Schedule printed below which should also have been mailed to you with a special Easter Offertory envelope for your convenience. I encourage everyone to plan ahead and attend the Holy Week Services. These sacred days are the summit of the entire Church Year. Let us all get into the spirit of this very important week. May we all be filled with joy this day as we participate in the self-offering of Jesus Christ who is our Hope, our Light and our Truth.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the dissipation of the catechumenate’s energy since almost everyone was born into the Church, Lent began to be seen more as a preparation to follow the Passion of Christ with devotion. In the city of Rome, creative spirits set-tled on “stational churches” as a way of keeping the energy flowing. Everyone would be directed to a certain “station” each day, and the name of that church provided a theme for the liturgy. So, for example, on certain Saturdays in Lent, everything centered on the church of St. Vitale. Now, this poor fellow had been thrown into a hole and covered in stones at his martyrdom, so the readings recalled Joseph thrown down the well by his brothers, and the wicked ser-vants killing the son of the owner of the vineyard. Gradu-ally, travelers to Rome noted the celebration and worked it into liturgical schedules back home. Eventually, calendars everywhere bore the curious footnote on a Lenten Satur-day: “Station S. Vitale.” This served the priority of getting ready to hear the Passion fairly well, but was hardly satis-factory for Lent’s baptismal character. Now, at last, our liturgy is reorganized to serve the deepest level of our tra-dition exceedingly well. Lent, once again, is all about baptism.
