DECEMBER 7, 2014 — 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 3

Briefs from Father McMahon

What a wonderful time of year this is! Advent and Christmas celebrate not only the miracle of every birth but also the mystery of a particular birth that opened the way for all human life to find its divine destiny. Mary, whose Immaculate Conception we celebrate on Monday, December 8th, a Holy Day of Obligation, holds us all in her openhearted consent to bear and give birth to Jesus, who made possible our rebirth and journey toward eternal life with God. Advent and Christmas are more than a beginning. In the same way that every conception contains the full potential for human life, the Incarnation holds the entire plan for the future of all creation. This was shown to us and shared in the God- made- Man, Jesus Christ, who came to show us how to be human beings, how to live fully in relationship, how to lose ourselves in the larger mystery of community-the living, visible Body of Christ. The whole story is made clear in the moving and poignant words of the prophet Isaiah in today’s first reading. “Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.” Our anxious, impatient world can so often weary us and drain our souls. In a spiritually sterile world we “bring forth” the Lord in new and surprising ways. Something that we cannot control is coming to us .We rejoice and open our hearts to receive the gift beyond our wildest imaginings. “Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it!” Today’s Gospel suggests that there was frenzied excitement among the people who listened to John the Baptist’s prophecy: “Reform your lives and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins!” Maybe John was a bit of a loner and even more of an outcast. Dressed in course, crude garments and existing on what amounted to bugs for food he would not be the first person you would want to sit next to at a dinner party. Yet John makes a crucial difference because he is willing to challenge the status quo and be a countersign for those around him. He was not being ‘weird’ for the sake of just getting attention, but pointing all to the Messiah, the Promised One of Ages. Fine for John the Baptist, but what about you and I? Will we make a difference in the world this Advent? How can we bring forth the Lord and point him out to others? Who needs our help in bringing “Comfort” to “My People?” Will we just fit in this Christmas or “Go, make a difference”? When we make a choice that is based on faith rather than selfishness, we make it easier for people to believe in God. Let your light shine so that people can see Jesus, the Light of the World. Now is our time. Prepare the way of the Lord!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma’s wall, often hold a “sick call crucifix.” It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini‑stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini‑altar that can be propped up by a sick person’s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The “sick call crucifix” is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ’s presence.
