Dear Friends: The question about the number of people who will be saved is always one that catches our attention. We want to be part of the group that is saved, and at times we wonder if we are doing enough. Jesus gives a

very good answer. He says keep on striving. At times we think that once we have made a commitment to God, we can sit back and relax. In the Christian life we must always be going forward with fire in our belly, or we will be slipping back. It is easy for us to sit back on our laurels, and that can be a big danger. The other danger Jesus points out is that just by being a Christian in name, or by receiving all the sacraments, or by having attended a Catholic school, does not save us. Living in a Christian environment does not necessarily make us a Christian. We may enjoy all the benefits of being Christian; however, can we love our enemies, can we forgive the one who betrayed us, can we turn the other cheek when insulted? Many times we find it impossible to love as a Christian. This is the first step to developing our life of faith, and it is a great grace. I see that in this situation, or with this person, I cannot love, wow! Now God can help us, now we can pray with humility. Remember the standards of heaven are different from the standards of this earth. Those who are in the first place will be last. Who are those in the first place? The rock stars, athletes, movie stars, millionaires and billionaires, many of the people we look up to and read about in the paper. It is not difficult to see that even in this life they are not happy; they marry a different person every other year, and what a misery. Brothers and sisters, let us ask God to help us to keep striving with fire in our belly to experience eternal life, which begins here, and to bring it to others.

RECTORY REPAIRS

The Lord blesses your generous heart!

REMEMBER THE CHURCH IN YOUR WILL Do you have a will? A wonderful way to help our parish and to save taxes is to remember St. Joe’s in your will. There are still

many large renovations that will be needed to reopen the Lyceum and the Convent. Some small steps make it possible to leave a legacy for decades to the place that has

nourished you for many years. If you need more information in setting up a will, please call the parish office. It is possible to arrange for some practical help on this and related topics. Thank you for your consideration.

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL 2013 AAA

Our Goal is $28,000.00 How We Are Doing:

Total pledged to date- $25,425.00 Number of Donors– 136

Many thanks to the Parishioners who gave so generously to the AAA. Don’t delay in giving

anything that you can to the Archbishop’s appeal. Thank you for your generosity.

FOOD PANTRY Once again deepest thanks to so many of you who

continue to support the Food Pantry with your food and cash contributions. Right now we're in

special need of canned ravioli, spaghetti (e.g. Chef Boyardee) and soup. Now I know that those

of you who are lucky enough to be Italian are beginning to twitch over the thought of pasta

from a can but, believe me, it is very welcome to many of our guests. During the summer when children are not being fed in school, it is very

difficult for some families to feed their kids those extra meals. Please be assured that anything you can contribute - no matter how small - is making a

big difference in the lives of others. Thank you again fort all your help and may God

bless you for your generosity

SOCIAL CONCERNS

"In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you

did it to me.”

“ The Lord hears the cry of the poor.” JAMAICA MISSION

You can’t imagine how much we appreciate your support and care. This gift helps us to evangelize those who have not yet come to know the Lord, provide for

some of the basic needs of our poor, educate the young, house the destitute elderly in a dignified way and put a roof over the heads of families without a

home. Your parish family has blessed the poor with some of what they deserve as God’s children; I am confident that the good Lord will bless the parishioners of St.

Joseph for this most generous sacrifice for our poor. Truly, “...the Lord hears the cry of the poor” and has touched the hearts of your parish family as they have so generously responded in the Lord’s name. We are

very grateful! From Fr. Gary Wiesmann.

ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY Due to Labor Day holiday, our monthly

meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 4th at 7:30 PM in Cafeteria. Please make every effort to attend as plans

will be discussed for the coming year. Thank you!

TD BANK We thank TD Bank for visiting us recently and speaking about their Affinity Program. The program works on existing and

new accounts and a small fee is paid to the parish for each account and as a percentage of the balances. This fee is not taken from the personal accounts but is paid by the Bank as a help to the

community. Forms to sign up for the Affinity Program are at the back of the church.

NEW ENERGIES NEWS Our New Energies Parish Partnership with St. Mary’s is ongoing and important for the life and new energy of our parishes. Archbishop Myers has stated, “A primary project goal is to strengthen the presence and ministry of the Church throughout the Archdiocese.” A team from both parishes is working to achieve this goal. In evaluating and planning together, the team is working on reaching out to the adults to

provide adult faith formation opportunities. Coming this fall St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s will offer the Neocatechumenate Catechesis and the Discovering Christ Program. Both offer you the opportunity to

draw closer to Christ. The Neocatechumenate catechesis will be offered at St. Joseph’s. The Discovering Christ Program will be offered at St. Mary’s and lead by a team of parishioners from both parishes. The Discovering Christ Program is beginning to form the team that will lead this program. You are invited to be part of the team! Discovering Christ offers opportunities for us to draw closer to Jesus. Want to know more? Please call the parish office for more information.

A Thank You from Josh Hammond

Hello, I would like to thank the parish of St.

Joseph's for helping me. In May, I stood before

many of you as I gave my experience of what the

Lord has done for me in 18 years of life, and asked

you to help support me in my endeavor to go to

Brazil for WYD to see the successor of Peter: Pope

Francis. With your prayers and your support I was

able to see the Pope and to be a witness of Christ.

I had an amazing experience, one which I will keep

for the rest of my life. For this I thank the parish of

St. Joseph's and all the parishioners. It was

through your help that made this pilgrimage a

reality. And now I ask you for one last thing: your

prayers as I go on to the seminary in Avignon,

France. With your prayers our Lord will give me

the graces I need in order to do His will. Again, I

cordially thank you all for your support. May the

Lord be with you always, and bless you in every

way.

My Experience of World Youth Day! I was amazed when at the last minute the Lord provided for me to go to World Youth Day. While it was not always what I expected, I had a wonderful experience overall. I was glad to interact with Catholics from various locations: Italy, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Arizona and the Bronx. It was unique to hear Pope Francis speak live where, in his usual style, he challenged us with direct words and questions that I needed to take time to reflect on in prayer. Two of the main spiritual lessons that I gained from this pilgrimage were being detached from my plans and being in control as well as persevering through suffering. I had to be detached from my plans on the trip because I did not know what we would be doing each day and was not in control of the schedule. This is also a good spiritual lesson in the future: to not be so attached to any of my ideas and plans so as to be closed off to the Lord’s will for me. While I did not suffer that much compared to other trips, I was challenged to not complain when we had to walk a great deal, did not eat or had to wait for a while. One great insight that I heard from a talk on the trip was that when we are complaining we are not listening to what the Lord has to say to us. The trip allowed me to experience more about the Neo-Catechumenal Way, both through the activities of our group as well as a meeting with Kiko Argüello and Carmen Hernández, the co-initiators of The Way. I really enjoyed listening to Kiko speak, to see the diversity of nations where The Way exists and witness thousands of young people stand up to declare that they felt called to the priesthood or religious life. I hope that I can continue to keep in touch with those I met on the trip and apply its spiritual lessons to my life. I thank those who helped me to go on this pilgrimage. —Dan Grossano

World Youth Day! I didn't think that someone in her 30's would get something out of going to World Youth Day but I was luckily mistaken. The pilgrimage helped me appreciate the things that I have which I frankly take for granted. It made me realize that

it's okay to suffer because it's at that moment that I have to turn to God and He will be there for me, so my faith was strengthened. I saw how disobedient I am and how I should not always

do my own will, but rather follow God's path for me because He knows what I need, not what I merely want. The greatest gift of all was the healing of some wounds that I didn't know needed healing. I have been so caught up in living in the "world" that I forgot that God has been there for me every step of the way, just waiting for me to turn to Him and this trip allowed me to do just that and redirect my focus. Marybell Flores
