Han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No matarás y el que mate será llevado ante el tribunal. Pero yo les di-go: Todo el que se enoje con su hermano, será llevado también ante el tribunal. También han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No cometerás adulterio. Pero yo les digo que quien mire con malos deseos a una mujer, ya cometió adulterio con ella en su corazón. Han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No jurarás en falso y le cumplirás al Señor lo que le hayas prometido con juramento. Pero yo les digo: No juren de ninguna manera, ni por el cielo, que es el trono de Dios; ni por la tierra, porque es donde él pone los pies; ni por Jerusalén, que es la ciudad del gran Rey. Meditación

No he venido a abolirlos, sino a darles plenitud. (Mateo 5,17) En el Evangelio de hoy leemos que Jesús dice que no ha venido a abolir la ley y los profetas, sino a darles cumplimiento. ¿Qué son la Ley y los profetas? La Ley se refiere a los cinco primeros libros del Antiguo Testamento, conocidos también como el Pentateuco. Los Profetas son los escritos de los profetas y los libros de sabiduría. Jesús hace referencia a aquello que consideramos el resumen del código moral del Antiguo Testamento: los mandamientos de la Ley de Dios. Según el pensamiento de Jesús, la Ley no consiste en principios meramente externos. No. La Ley no es una exposición venida desde fuera. Todo lo contrario. En verdad, la Ley de Dios corresponde al ideal de perfección que está radicado en el corazón de cada hombre. Esta es la razón por la cual la persona que cumpla los mandamientos no solamente se siente realizada en sus aspiraciones humanas, sino también alcanza la perfección del cristianismo o, en las palabras de Jesús, alcan-za la perfección del Reino de Dios. “El que los cumpla y los enseñe, será grande en el Reino de los cielos.” El cumplimiento de la Ley no se resume en la letra, pues está visto que “la letra mata, pero el espíritu da vi-da” (2 Corintios 3,6). En este sentido es que Jesús emplea su autoridad para interpretar la Ley según su es-píritu más auténtico y la amplía hasta las últimas consecuencias: el respeto a la vida está unido a la extirpa-ción del odio, la venganza y la ofensa; la castidad del cuerpo requiere la fidelidad y por la indisolubilidad; la verdad de la palabra dada requiere el respeto a los pactos. Al cumplir la ley, Jesús “manifiesta con pleni-tud el hombre al propio hombre, Y a la vez le muestra con claridad su altísima vocación” (Concilio Vaticano II, Constitución Gaudium et Spes, 41). Busquemos, pues, aquella perfección de la vida cristiana que realiza en acciones concretas lo que predica con palabras. “Amado Jesús, enséñame a no quedarme atascado en la letra de la Ley, sino entender y aceptar la esencia de tu enseñanza.” Primera Lectura: Eclesiástico 15, 16 – 21; Salmo 119 (118), 1-5, 17-18, 33-34; Segunda Lectura: 1 Corintios 2, 6-10

Meditation; Sirach 15:16-21

Before man are life and death, . . . whichever he chooses shall be given him. (Sirach 15:17) Free will. It’s God’s greatest gift to us, and it’s also our riskiest characteristic. Free will has enabled us to decide for ourselves what kind of people we will be. It has enabled us to create music and art, to build cities and roads, to marry and have children. It has also enabled us to destroy instead of create, to hurt and betray instead of heal and build up. Most important, it’s through our free will that we decide whether to follow Jesus or our own thoughts and desires. Sirach seems keenly aware of how much of a two-edged sword our free will can be. Each of us, he says, is free to choose between “fire and water, . . . life and death, good and evil” (Sirach 15:16, 17). And God will respect whatever we choose. Of course, our heavenly Father longs for us to choose life in him, but he will never force himself on us. He is not like the petty gods dreamed up by the pagans, who use threats and manipulation to keep their people in line. God also knows that free will has consequences. And so Sirach teaches, “Whichever he chooses shall be given him” (Sirach 15:17). While God honors our choices, he also respects the results those choices bring. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a real-life illustration: “Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment” (Matthew 5:22). If you choose to nurture anger, resentment, and condemnation, don’t be surprised if other people begin treating you in the same way. But if you build an environment of trust and respect, that’s what you will receive. So choose life today. Use this awesome gift of your free will to choose gentleness, patience, and all the other fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Above all, choose Jesus. Welcome him into your life, and let his love soften your heart. Sabía usted que … Hemos terminado el ciclo C y acabamos de comenzar, en Adviento, el ciclo A? ¿Pero por qué?

El año litúrgico cristiano pasa por tres ciclos, también llamados años A, B y C. Cada ciclo tiene su propia secuencia de lecturas del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento en la liturgia de la Iglesia, de modo que la distribución de textos bíblicos a lo largo de tres años brinda a los fieles una visión integral de toda la historia de la salvación. La Constitución del Sacrosanctum Concilium nos pide: “Dejen que los fieles preparen la mesa de la Palabra de Dios más abundantemente. Dejen que los tesoros de la Biblia se abran más para que dentro de un período de tiempo determinado, las partes más importantes de la Biblia sean leídas a la gente. Sagrada Escritura“. Con este fin, el rito romano organiza las lecturas bíblicas de la celebración eucarística que se completarán cada tres años: En el año “A”, la lectura principal (Evangelio) sigue el Evangelio de San Mateo; En el año “B”, el Evangelio de San Marcos; En el año “C”, el Evangelio de San Lucas. ¿Y el Evangelio de San Juan? Está reservado para ocasiones especiales, especialmente fiestas grandes y solemnidades, con énfasis en la Semana Santa. ¿Cómo saber si el ciclo litúrgico actual es A, B o C? Solo agregue los dígitos del año. La referencia es el ciclo C, que se aplica a años cuya suma de dígitos es divisible por 3. 2019, por ejemplo: 2 + 0 + 1 + 9 = 12. Dado que 12 es divisible por 3, este es un año del ciclo C. Ya los dígitos del año 2020 suman 4, es decir, 3 + 1. No tenemos que esperar hasta el 1 de enero de 2020 para entrar en el ciclo A, ya que el punto de partida no se basa en el año calendario, sino, por supuesto, en el calendario litúrgico de la iglesia.

We have finished cycle C and we have just begun, in Advent, cycle A? But why?

The Christian liturgical year goes through three cycles, also called years A, B and C. Each cycle has its own sequence of Old and New Testament readings in the liturgy of the Church, so that the distribution of biblical texts over three years gives the faithful an integral view of the entire history of salvation. The Constitution of Sacrosanctum Concilium asks us: “ Let the faithful prepare the table of the Word of God more abundantly. Let the treasures of the Bible open more so that within a certain period of time, the most important parts of the Bible are read to people. Holy Scripture ". To this end, the Roman rite organizes the biblical readings of the Eucharistic celebration that will be completed every three years: In the year "A", the main reading (Gospel) follows the Gospel of St. Matthew; In the year "B", the Gospel of St. Mark; In the year "C", the Gospel of St. Luke. This means that, liturgically, the 2020 cycle begins already in 2019, the first Sunday of Advent, which was December 1, 2019. We do not have to wait until January 1, 2020 to enter cycle A, since the Starting point is not based on the calendar year, but, of course, on the liturgical calendar of the church.
