The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas
October 10, 2010 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
PARISH MISSION
The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ.

Please remember in your prayers those
that have passed away and their families:
Rita Broderick Durkin
Guest Mutterings I've been healed!
We're always aware of our pain; we're not always aware of our healing. A child
will run to a parent and point to the “boo boo” where she scraped her knee but soon
be off to play, the pain forgotten. Adults, too, can be absorbed in the pain of the
moment but forget all about it when the pain passes. Which is why, perhaps, the line
from this Sunday's gospel is not as odd as it seems. “One of the 10 lepers who had
been cleansed realizing he had been healed, returned . . .”
Upon first reading I wondered how the others didn't realize they were healed. Perhaps it's because we get so
comfortable with our maladies that they can become a part of our identity, our sense of self. “I've got a bum knee,” I
would often say. Then one day my wife noticed, “You're leg hasn't been hurting you for some time now, has it?” I
remember when it used to hurt, but I can't remember when it stopped.
Those who have the habit of praying throughout the day, as well as those who pray in times of distress, may be
so focused praying about the next worry or difficulty they may not be aware that yesterday's prayers have been
answered.
Today's readings are about gratitude. Why not stop today and try to remember what you were praying about
yesterday? You might have some thanking to do.

“Christ Renews His Parish” will return to St. Barnabas on the weekend of October
16-17 with a retreat for the women of our parish in the St. Barnabas convent. On the
following weekend, October 23-24, a CRHP retreat will be offered for the men of our
parish, also in our convent building.
I write to ask each of you to prayerfully consider participating in one of these
special renewal weekends, both for the spiritual boost it will provide for your faith, and also for the life and energy
of our parish family. “Christ Renews His Parish” offers an opportunity to step back from daily life and re-examine
our Christian, Catholic commitment to the teachings of Jesus. It is meant to bring members of our parish together
through a greater appreciation of scripture, the sacraments, prayer, and the friendship of our parish community.
A women’s team and a men’s team, all of them fellow parishioners, are now in preparation to present our CRHP
weekends in October. They have volunteered to offer personal witness to the presence of Jesus Christ in their lives
on such topics as: New Life in Christ, Discipleship, Renewal, Father's Loving Care, and Christian Community.
Group discussion and responses follow each presentation, with time for prayer and personal reflection, too. There
are no surprises, and no need to get up and talk – just a lot of good conversation, food for thought, and some fun as
well.
All the team members have participated in CRHP at St. Barnabas. They appreciate how much CRHP has
contributed to their life of faith and love of St. Barnabas Parish, and they want to share that richness with you.
You will hear much more about CRHP in the coming weeks. Invitations to participate will be made in the
bulletin, in announcements at Mass, and, perhaps by someone you know. There will be several ways to sign up. If
you have any questions, please call me at the rectory, or contact any of the men and women who are tem members.
CRHP is a great opportunity for anyone, 19 years or older, to gain a deeper sense of purpose and fellowship
with Christ, and lasting friendships within our parish community. So say a prayer. Ask God what you should do. (I
think he wants you to attend, but I'm biased.) If you feel that Christ is calling you through the Holy Spirit, please
answer the call!

EVER WONDER WHO GETS EVERYTHING READY BEFOREHAND SO WE CAN CELEBRATE MASS TOGETHER?
Our Sacristans do! And you can be one of our sacristans! Sacristans are the “behind the scenes” ministers who ensure
the reverent flow of our faith community’s prayer and worship by preparing for our weekend liturgical celebrations.
The sacristan arrives about one half hour before the liturgy begins and makes all the necessary preparations for the
Celebration of the Eucharist. This is a very quiet, behind the scenes ministry that does not require a huge time
commitment or attending meetings yet serves a very significant purpose- Preparing for the Eucharistic Feast. No
prior experience is necessary and training will be provided. Please consider joining us in this very sacred and
fulfilling ministry. Please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 or [email protected] for more info.
RCIA~RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS
Are you a member of St. Barnabas parish who has a friend, family member or neighbor who has a interest in becom-
ing a Catholic? Are you a visitor to St. Barnabas who may like to be part of our Catholic community? Once again this
year we are offering the opportunity to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for adults (RCIA).
The sessions are relaxed, friendly, and informative. Join others who, like yourself want to learn more about the
Catholic Faith. Meetings are held on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. in the church rectory and usually last an hour and a
half. We are scheduled to begin in late October. For more information call Joe Forst at 773-238-5237.
ALTAR SERVER TRAINING FOR WEDDINGS
All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade altar servers who wish to be scheduled to serve at a wedding at St. Barnabas are invited to
attend ONE of the following training sessions on Sunday, October 17th at either 9 a.m., 11 a.m., or 1p.m.
Serving weddings has always been considered a treat for those who are chosen, but you have to be trained first.
Please meet Deacon Andy in the church on October 17th!
WELCOMING CHILDREN TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH
It is a wonderful experience to welcome children and teens to the Catholic Faith!
The Children’s Catechumenate is a process of Faith Formation for Children who have not been baptized and are age 7
and older. It is, also, a process of Faith Formation for young people who were baptized as an infant but have not
received any Catechetical formation.
The Children’s Catechumenate is a part of the RCIA- Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The formation primarily
helps children to know Jesus and the values of the Kingdom of God. In getting to know Jesus, the young people come
to experience God’s special love for them.
If you would like to help in this process or learn more about it, please contact Sr. Julie Flynn at 773-445-3450.

MARRIAGE MINISTRY NEEDS YOU
Zsa Zsa Gbor once said, “A man in love is incomplete until he’s married...
and then he's finished.” She went on to marry nine times, eight of them
ending in divorce. She could have used a good Marriage Ministry at her
parish!!
We invite interested married couples to get in on the ground floor of a new
ministry here at St. Barnabas… a Marriage Ministry. We’ll form a team to
work together to offer all married couples support and encouragement in
their marriages… special speakers, renewal of vows, monthly articles,
pre-cana classes and post-cana special events. If you’re curious, please call
Deacon Andy or Cindy Neu at 773-779-1511, or e-mail us at
[email protected] or [email protected]. We're not looking for
couples with “perfect” marriages…just couples willing to share the joys
and challenges of being married, be it for one year or 50. Please join us as
we start this new ministry.
