Parish Transformation Update

Thank you to the 200 individuals who completed the Parish Transformation survey during the first four days of it being

online. By the time you read this article, we are hopeful that this number has increased significantly so that the PT team

has sufficient feedback from parishioners as they make important plans for the St. Barnabas family.

The team began to review what the Parish Transformation Workbook calls the “Mission Building Blocks.” This week we

focused on Evangelization and Catechesis. Each of these building blocks is worthy of pages of reflection, but I would like

to focus on just one of them this week: Catechesis. We are all disciples of Christ, called to deepen our relationship with the

Lord and learn to practice our faith in society. We continue to grow in our own faith at every stage of life and with every

experience. In this way, we can move others where they are on their own faith journey. Jesus said: Go, make disciples of

all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out

everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of time. (Mt. 28:18-20).

We discussed some of our strong parish catechetical efforts including, our Religious Education program, Faith Formation,

the Children’s Liturgy, the celebrant who sets the stage for each reading at the Mass, and, of course, our school. We

discussed our desire to expand parishioner participation in our various ministries, organizations and activities while recog-

nizing the challenge of competing demands on our time. Please continue to pray for us as we continue our journey in Par-

ish Transformation.

No One Is Too High To Serve

Jim Heskett of Harvard Business School writes that in 2013 he

attended a board meeting at ServiceMaster, a major corporation that

sells cleaning materials and services. Heskett recalls that ServiceMaster

CEO, William Pollard, spilled a cup of coffee prior to the start of the

board meeting. Pollard “asked a colleague to get him cleaning compound

and a cloth, things easily found in a company that provided cleaning

services. Whereupon he proceeded to get down on his hands and knees

to clean up the spill himself. The remarkable thing was that board

members and employees alike hardly noticed as he did it. It was as if it was expected in a company with self-

proclaimed servant leadership.”

Fact is, the inclination to serve seems all too rare, especially among those in power. It seems so rare that when it

happens—when the pope washes and kisses the feet of 12 men and women in a Rome prison housing many hardened

criminals, rather than the feet of priests and bishops on Holy Thursday—the moment is broadcast around the world.

But the pope’s purpose is not to draw attention to his own humility, but to issue an invitation: “Go and do likewise.”

Fr. Larry Janowski

The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience;

wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality;

science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice.

Spiritual Life

MASS IN HONOR OF ALL SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN, PAST AND PRESENT On Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 10:00 am the faith community of St. Barnabas will gather to celebrate A Mass in

Honor of All Military Service Men and Women, Past and Present. As we come together to celebrate the Eucharist, we

will honor all the women and men who have served and who are currently serving our country. We will come together

to pray for peace. We will come together at God’s banquet to continue the quest for a just world. We will come

together in a spirit of hope. We invite members of the military, and their families and friends, to join our parish as we

celebrate and support their service and dedication to our country. Father George Kane, retired chaplain for the US

Navy, will be the main celebrant of the liturgy. If you would like to add the name of an active service person to the list

that will be read at the Prayers of the Faithful during the Mass, please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 x. 226 or

at [email protected].

A special Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on All

Souls’ Day, Monday, November 2nd at 7 pm. Anyone

who has lost a loved one this past year who did not receive an invitation or who was not buried from St. Barnabas

and would like to participate in this liturgy by presenting a candle in memory of your loved one is asked to call the

rectory at 773-779-1166 and leave the name of the deceased to be included in the liturgy.

WOMEN’S CENTER BABY BOTTLE PROJECT As of this writing, over 500 baby bottles have been distributed to parishioners! Please

remember: return your baby bottle next weekend, October 25 –26 when you come to Mass. Just drop off your FULL

bottle of coins/cash into one of the boxes located just inside the entrances of Church. If you wish, you may count up

your coins and write out a check payable to The Women’s Center and receive a tax-deduction for your donation.

Note: please DO NOT PLACE YOUR BOTTLES IN THE COLLECTION BASKET during Mass. We don’t want

to strain the backs of our ushers! To learn more about this wonderful Pro-Life organization, visit their web-

site: www.womens-center.org.

FALL/ WINTER COLLECTION FOR “CHILDREN’S CLOTHING CLOSET”

Children’s Clothing Closet at St. Gall’s Parish is a ministry dedicated to children: new born up to age eleven. They

are in need of gently used winter coats and other clothing for the fall and winter season. We ask that all clothes

be washed before being donated.

This is part of Respect Life month. St. Barnabas will be collecting winter coats and clothing for new born up to age

eleven in the Narthex on two weekends Oct. 10-11 and Oct. 24-25. If anyone would like to help deliver the

clothing, please contact [email protected]. Thank you for your generosity.
