OUR PARISHES THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS

As we listen to today’s gospel, we hear again the famous encounter between Jesus and an un-

named man who asks the proverbial question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus an-

swers him with this response: “You know the commandments: you shall not kill; you shall not com-

mit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your

father and your mother.” The man answered: “Teacher I have observed all of these from my

youth.” Jesus replied: “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the

poor...” We know how the story goes - the man went away sad, for he had many possessions.

For a few minutes let us look at this man’s reaction, there is nothing wrong in having possessions.

But what was his problem? The problem was that he was not aware that the wealth controlled him and not the other way

around. In many ways he is like the fabled King Midas who thought gold would satisfy all his needs. As we know from the sto-

ry, the gold did not satisfy his needs. The man went away sad, not because he was not living up to the commandments; he left

because without knowing it he could not give up control of the wealth he possessed. He was not a bad person but, unknowing-

ly, he was only living part of the life that God wanted him to live. Thus, he went away sad.

Let us look at Jesus’ response. “He looked at him with love.” Jesus offered, but the man was not ready to give up the wealth

Love does the impossible it allows the person to walk away from Jesus’ offer. Love never forces the person to obey. So, in

love, Jesus lets the person go; because Jesus knows that the person is not ready or cannot

change. Jesus does not change what he offered; he does not water down what he offers, he

sticks to what He said.

Now let us put ourselves in the person of that man, what would our answer be to Jesus’ ques-

tion? Yes, we too, are comfortable with our possessions and for many of us they may define

who we are. But if we lose our possessions, we seem to be at a loss for words if someone

who ask: “Who are you?” Too often, without knowing it, we define ourselves by the posses-

sions or the type of job that we have.

If Jesus should ask us: “You are lacking one thing. Go sell what you have, and give to the

poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come follow me.” What would our answer be?

You have to remember this is not a one-time request; it is a daily request until the time comes

that He calls us home. God Bless,

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environ-

ments - Bullying Prevention Month:

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital de-

vices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbully-

ing can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in

social media, forums, or gaming where people can view,

participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes

sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or

mean content about someone else. It can include sharing

personal or private information about someone else caus-

ing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying

crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. The

most common places where cyberbullying occurs are: So-

cial Media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and

Tik Tok; Text messaging and messaging apps on mobile or

tablet devices; Instant messaging, direct messaging, and

online chatting over the internet; Online forums, chat

rooms, and message boards, such as Reddit; Email; and

online gaming communities. Adults should take the same

approach to address it: support the child being bullied, ad-

dress the bullying behavior of a participant, and show chil-

dren that cyberbullying is taken seriously. To see what the

diocese is doing to help maintain safe environments, visit

FAMILY LIFE Having possessions is an illusion. In today’s gospel Jesus

told the young man to give up his need to control and put

his trust in God. He couldn’t let go! In families, our need to

control destroys relationships. We can lead, teach and en-

courage, but we can’t control anyone but ourselves.

“I prayed, and prudence was given me.” (Wisdom 7:7) How

one talks with God (prayer) varies from person to person.

Some like memorized prayers, some read scripture, some

quietly meditate… Share what style is most meaningful to

each of you.

New request forms are available in the back of each church or the parish office. The form is like an order form where you have the opportunity to request multiple mass intentions all on one page. Pay close attention to the una-vailable dates at the top and be sure to put your name and phone number on it. MAKE SURE TO NOTE THE CHURCH OF CHOICE and make your checks out to the same church.
