If we listen carefully to Job in the first reading, we find him frustrated in the situation that he finds
himself in. He asks: “Is not man’s life drudgery?” and later on adds: “Remember that my life is like the
wind; I shall not see happiness again.” Do we ask similar questions today? They may sound like this:
“When will the cold and the snow go away? When will spring come? When will the potholes go away?”
All of these may be symptoms of what we may call “Cabin Fever”. Studies have shown how we react
differently if it is cold when the sun is out and shining brightly.
You and I have a special sun that can turn things around for us - THAT
SUN IS JESUS THE SON OF GOD. In reading the Book of Job, we see
the common thought of that time was that if you were good, God would reward you with many
things to make you wealthy and comfortable and if you were bad all of that “stuff” would be
taken away from you. The book of Job was written to dispel that myth. God stayed with Job
even when all the bad things happened to him. Job still trusted in God even when Job felt that
he was not there. In chapter 42 Job says to God: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be
hindered. I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know. I have
heard of you by word of mouth, but now my eye has seen you. Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and
ashes.”
Jesus is there with us in our cabin fever days even when we say He is not; Job came to realize that. That is why he asks for
forgiveness. Each one of us will experience that day when we feel that Jesus is not with us; that is when we have to
remember the footprints in the sand story. That is when Jesus is carrying us on his shoulders.
So don’t let cabin fever get to you; turn to Jesus for the solution.
This Sunday, after all of the Masses there will be the blessing of throats in honor of the Feast of Saint Blaise.
God Bless, Fr. Ray

February 2, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Every year we look forward to another year of hearing about the Catholic Services Appeal. The theme for 2018 is UNITED IN SERVICE. We know that we cannot minister (i.e. help) everyone in need, even here in our small community of Bradford, on our own. But if we “pool” our funds much more can be achieved. That is why the Diocese has this annual appeal - so that we can serve more than if we tried separately. I know for many the assumption is that the money will go up to Erie and stay in Erie, but that is not true. We have wonderful representatives of the Erie Diocese working in our area. We have Catholic Charities counseling and adoption services located in the Hooker-Fulton building on Main Street, and the Catholic Rural Ministry of the Bradford Deanery, serving Potter and McKean counties located in Port Allegany. The Rural Ministry helps those who find themselves in emergency situations. Saint Bernard Parish also supports Destinations and the Friendship Table here in Bradford. The Diocese has set the 2018 assessments for Saint Bernard Parish at $37,388 and Saint Francis at $28,275 with any amount above that staying in the respective parish. Your contributions will insure a continuation of the love and concern Jesus taught us as believers. Each of us plays an important role in helping to meet the needs of our families in our parish and our Diocese. To the Saint Bernard parishioners: I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the success of the 2017 appeal. In past years, Saint Bernard has used the overage for repairs to the boiler system. This past year we have been updating and modernizing the system as best we can. So we hope to have the extra money as a buffer in the event of any emergency repairs. To the Saint Francis (OMPH) parishioners: I understand this has been a tough year of change. But we have made it through! While the 2017 CSA contributions fell short of the assessment by $2,346 (paid to the Diocese from the general fund), I am hopeful that the 2018 assessment will be exceeded, allowing us a reserve for emergencies. If you are not able to give monetarily this year, please keep the appeal in your prayers for its success. Prayerfully yours,
