Keep, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy: and, because the frailty of man with-out thee cannot but fall; keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 50:5-9a

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not re-bellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty?

PSALM 116:1-6, 8-9

R/. I walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. R/.

The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, I beg you, save my life!” R/.

Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. R/.

For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I walk before the LORD in the land of the living. R/.

Second Reading James 2:14-18

What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But some one will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

and I to the world. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 8:27-35

At that time: Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter an-swered him, "You are the Christ." And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men." And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospel's will save it.

“O, How Amiable” Fr. Timothy Perkins

The Introit for Mass last Sunday consisted of verses from Psalm 84. Any portion of that lovely psalm always calls to mind the anthem setting of the open-ing verses by Ralph Vaughn Williams, a perennial favorite with church choirs. With it in mind, I read over the psalm as an act of prayer this week. Doing so awakened to my soul the spiritual power of long-ing for holiness.

Throughout the psalm, the blessedness of one who walks in the ways of the Lord is expressed. But the longing of which I speak is perhaps best described in the second verse.

My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the LORD;

my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

How beautifully this language draws us into the en-counter of worship! Lately, we have been richly blessed at Saint Mary the Virgin. We have had wonderful opportunities to express our devotion in the special liturgies of ordination, the joyful celebra-tions of a priest’s first Mass and first blessings. We have been blessed by the fellowship and preaching of the Bishop of Fort Worth and the company of clergy and faithful of the diocese. Likewise, we en-joyed the brief visit of our Ordinary and the experi-ence of worship with clergy and faithful of the Per-sonal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter to which we now belong.

With all these occasions, God invites us to allow our

longing to continually increase. May we hunger and

thirst after righteousness, that by God’s grace, we

may find satisfaction in the heavenly realm. How

amiable is the Lord’s dwelling, and how delightful

is the desire to enter in.
