The theme of International Youth Day
2014 is “Youth and Mental Health” under
the slogan ‘Mental Health Matters’.
Youth with mental health conditions can
often experience stigma and
discrimination, which in turn can lead to
exclusion and/or discourage people from
seeking help for fear of being negatively
‘labelled’. Efforts are needed to
overcome this stigma to ensure that young
people with mental health conditions can
lead full and healthy lives free of isolation
and unnecessary shame, and that they
openly seek the services and support they
need.
Join the campaign on Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and Pinterest to help raise
awareness! #MentalHealthMatters and
#UN4Youth.
The fourth annual National Eye Health Week
will take place 16 – 22 September 2013. The
week aims to raise awareness of the
importance of good eye health and the need
for regular sight tests for all.
20 million people in the UK could be at risk
of avoidable sight loss because they fail to
have regular sight tests
Almost two million people in the UK are
living with sight loss yet over half of sight
loss can be avoided.
Francesca Marchetti, Chair of the National
Eye Health Week Steering Group, said:
“Sight is the sense people fear losing the
most, yet many of us don't know the best
way to look after our eyes. This is why it is
so important you get your eye health tested
every two years even if you think your vision
is fine as some eye conditions may not show
symptoms.’

Health Week, visit

1 in 25 children in the UK are born with a
genetic disorder that amounts to more than
30,000 babies born each year.
This year’s Jeans for Genes Day takes place
on Friday 19th September and is aiming to
raise £2 million to provide care and support
to children with genetic disorders.
The day invites people to leave their suits
and uniforms at home and wear their jeans
to work or school in return for a donation
which will help change the lives of children
across the UK.
Jeans for Genes Day provides vital funding
for the care and support of children with
genetic disorders. In 2014, 25 charities will
benefit from the funds raised on Jeans for
Genes Day.
Celebrity supporters include Olympic
gymnast Louis Smith, Coronation St’s Kym
Marsh and reality star Sam Faiers.

The word muscle is derived from the Latin
term musculus, meaning "little mouse".
If you're travelling on a long-haul flight,
there are several ways you can reduce
your risk of getting deep vein thrombosis
(DVT).
DVT occurs when blood flows too slowly
through the veins. The blood forms a clot that blocks up deep veins, usually in
the legs. Typical signs include a swollen or painful calf or thigh, paleness and
increased heat around the affected area.
If you are planning a long-distance plane, train or car journey, ensure that you:
Wear loose, comfortable clothes.
Consider buying flight socks (compression stockings).
Store luggage overhead so you have room to stretch out your legs.
Do anti-DVT exercises. Raise your heels, keeping your toes on the floor,
then bring them down. Do this 10 times. Now raise and lower your toes 10
times. Do it at least every half an hour.
Walk around whenever you can.
Drink plenty of water.
Don’t drink alcohol or take sleeping pills.
