A BARNSLEY nursery is believed tobe the first in Barnsley to fit athumbprint recognition securitysystem.

The system, which cost MiniMe’s Nursery, on Summer Lane,£32,000 to install, turnsthumbprints into a code.

When parents press their

thumbs on a pad, the dooropens.

Robert Howes, a director of thecompany which owns thenursery, said parents hadpreviously to ring a door bell toget in.

Sometimes a queue formedbefore the door was opened andthis sparked security doubts.

Mr Howes said: “The

system means that parents arenot waiting around. They are inwithin a second. Once thechildren are inside, there is nochance of an unauthorised persongetting in.”

The nursery has taken on twostaff since it was taken over lastautumn. This brings theworkforce to 18.

Mr Howes, whose company

Clean Up Time, cleaned thepremises, heard it had been putup for sale.

He, his wife Amanda, herparents Jeff and Norma formed acompany and took it over.

An application for £28,000 hasbeen submitted to the council torefurbish a play area adjacent to acar park. If it is successful, workwill include putting up a canopy

so children can play in all

weathers.

An inspection by the school

standards watchdog Ofsted has

led to the school getting a ‘good’

rating.

The nursery, which is in the

McLintocks’ building, caters for

about 35 children a day.

Businesses battle to be in top ten

FOR business to succeed it isimportant to have a clearvision, passionate leaders and awell-trained workforce. Theseare the key ingredients of asuccessful company.

Customers are the be all andend all of our business. We seekour customers’ views on whatthey think about our service, whether it is good or bad.Feedback shapes our future.

We listen to what people haveto say and adopt an open andhonest approach at all times.

Over the last four years,Stagecoach has transformed anoutdated and underusednetwork by investing in newvehicles and routes to recordbumper passenger figures.

We do our best to meetcustomer expectations butoccasionally things can gowrong. Operating in today’senvironment, keeping ourservices moving on congestedroads is not easy.

We are working closely withBarnsley Highways Departmentand South Yorkshire PassengerTransport Executive to identifyways to reduce congestion andto enable bus services to keepmoving.

Success is driven by our teamapproach. There is a strongsense of community and ouremployees are greatambassadors for ourorganisation.

Working here gets in people’sblood because it’s a companywith really strong family values. There’s a real sense ofcomradeship and that’ssomething which is hard tofind.

We have multiple generations

working within the company.Training keeps us ahead of

the game. Continuous staffdevelopment and support isone of the reasons whyemployees choose to stay onboard for many years.

People are the lifeblood of theorganisation and we feel that ifwe treat them well they willadd value to the business.

It’s something of a cycle;younger people draw on theexperience of older staff, thenthey in turn become the ones

who mentor and train otherpeople.

Investment has been madeinto the company over the lastfew years, and the qualitytheme is integral to what wedo. Equally, the new moderninterchange has formed animpressive gateway for visitorstravelling into Barnsley.

We are working with otherstakeholders moving towardsimproving bus networks andaccessibility, reducingcongestion and pollution andencouraging a greater use ofpublic transport.

We care greatly about theenvironment and thecommunity we operate in andare looking at ways to reduceour carbon footprint byinvesting in cleaner, greenerengines for our buses. We takegreat pride in being the firstbus operator to join the Care 4Air – Eco Stars project with theassistance from BarnsleyCouncil’s Environmental team.

The regeneration of Barnsleyand the town centre willflourish with a strong transportnetwork and we will continueto work closely with otherpartners to achieve Barnsley’svision of being a greatcommercial centre and a 21stcentury market town.

Working with the Chamber ofCommerce since the early 90shas helped me understand theneeds of Barnsley businessesand I take great pride inknowing they are all behindmaking Barnsley a better placeto live and work.

The bus industry now is aworld away from the one Istarted work in several yearsago, and it’s for the better. It isgood to look back and reflecton what has happened overthe years and how far theindustry has come. However,my mind is firmly focussed onthe future and what we canachieve.

My advice to anyone startinga career is to pursue yourambitions, they are achievable. If you are lucky enough to riseto a management position, always value your workforce,be open and honest in businessdealings and never give up onyour dreams.

Sue’s recipe todrive successPeople are the key to keep the wheels of the bus industry going round.Sue Hayes, operations director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, tells why.

My advice to anyonestarting a career, whatever business it’sin, is to pursue yourambitions, they areachievable ❞

spanned across three decades.

Having mastered the art of creating

luxury bespoke handcrafted kitchens, KC

range to offer more affordable bespoke

furniture collections.

KC Design House continues to fulfil the

requirements of those with generous

budgets in search of a luxury high end

kitchens whilst also offering high quality

In January managing director Richard

Jewkes added an extremely competitive

German manufacturer to the showroom,

providing sleek and contemporary kitchens

boasting both affordability and cutting

edge design. This range runs alongside

KC’s bespoke ranges, handcrafted by its in

house professional tradesmen.

In addition this Autumn will see the

launch of the new KC Bespoke Contract

range, aimed solely at the self-build, and

small developer market. This allows one-

off, made-to-measure ranges of

exceptionally well made kitchen furniture in

a selection of door styles at a marked

reduction in price with shorter lead times,

perfect for those working in property

development.

Next year KC Design House will celebrate

its 30th year in business but Richard is far

from complacent with plans already in

place for further expansion.

“The recession in particular made us

rethink our target market and expand our

product range,” says Richard. “Developing

more affordable bespoke furniture has

certainly opened up doorways, bringing

new custom to the showroom that we had

previously overlooked.

“We offer our clients a complete kitchen

project design and installation service,

which includes everything from the

cabinets and worktops, to flooring and

lighting solutions.

“During this process we work very closely

with clients, listening carefully, and then

creating designs and solutions that will

work within their budget and allow their

design to evolve through to fruition.

“With smaller budgets we have to be

more disciplined with the design but the

product and quality of service remains

high, ensuring excellent value for money.

“We always aim for 100 per cent

customer satisfaction whether the client

has £12,000 or £35,000 to spend on a

complete project.”

As part of its product expansion KC

Design House has also developed a KC

Bespoke range of modern and classic

fitted bedroom, dressing room and living

room furniture, including media walls.

Richard is also developing the company’s

third generation website which should be

finished late autumn. It will showcase all

the new ranges currently available,

together with a portfolio of designs from
