The Board does not meet in July.

The following actions were taken by the Board of Governors during the

August 2017 meeting:

● The Board introduced themselves to each other.

● Reviewed financials and the new membership commitment pledge structure.

● Voted to fill two Board positions left vacant by 2 sitting board members mov-

ing to the Executive Committee. Based on recommendations made by the

Nominating Committee, Temple President Felice Brenner asked the Board to

approve Rona Klein and Andy Meltzer to complete the final year of Jennifer

Grosswald and Evan Friedel's terms.

Please help us find a new staff member for Temple Emanuel. We are

hiring a receptionist to work Mondays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,

freeing up Temple Administrator, Cynthia Silber, to work away from the

"glass bowl" of our lobby. A few developments led to our decision to

add this position.

1. As of last year, our ever-dependable and long-term bookkeeper,

Diane Deal, works three days a week vs. four, freeing up office

space and budget for a receptionist position.

2. Cynthia's duties continue to expand so that she needs more time

to work quietly vs. answer the phone and greet visitors.

3. We moved the cabinetry from the gift shop to the front lobby for

increased visibility of Sisterhood gift shop products.

4. We have converted the old gift shop space into an office for

Diane mid-week and Cynthia on Mondays and Fridays.

Please click for a PDF version of the job description. Feel free to share

the job description with anyone who might be interested.

Thank you for your help and please feel free to call (336) 255-1643 or

email Felice Brenner with any questions or comments. Applicants

should email resume and contact information to Felice Brenner.

PRESIDENT FELICE BRENNER Who Are We?

My dad used to tell me what happens to people who assume.

So, imaging that children might read this, I was feeling like quite the nitwit when we realized

that we were basing temple decisions on assumptions about our membership. Understanding

what happens to temple leaders like those referenced above, board member Lee Chaden

helped push us to conduct a demographic survey and compare it against some old numbers

so that we could look at trends. Alas—there was no former survey found. But, thanks to some

hard work from Cynthia in the office, we found some surprising trends and below, I’ve listed

the highlights and what I call the “bottom line” of what these numbers mean. It’s a snapshot

of who we are and I think it’s fascinating.

Before you read down, please know that these are more than fun facts. Rabbi Mark, Courtney, Colleen, and our

Board of Governors have already responded to these trends with a variety of initiatives including an engage-

ment committee for membership follow-up and contacts, better connections for singles and young families, a

new Chavarah program, additional time and funding for programs on effective aging, and a reboot of our life-

long learning efforts. We’ve finished assuming and started being strategic about member engagement and be-

coming more “relational” and relevant to our congregants.

Of course, we have a lot more to do so stay tuned to the Wednesday e-mail, the bulletin, or join us at any Tem-

ple activity. You’ll see how we’re adapting to engage and connect our members to each other and Judaism in

meaningful and lasting ways. Ask me or any board member to learn more and please feel free to share YOUR

ideas so that we can better serve our Jewish community.

Wishing you a sweet, healthy, and happy new year—L’ Shanah Tovah!

Felice Highlights of 2017 Temple Emanuel of Winston-Salem Demographic Survey

Membership Units are Steady and Strong

As of this summer, we have 279 member units—about the same number for the past 15 years under Rabbi Mark

Cohn’s leadership.

About 25% are single adults, 8% are associate or affiliate members and the rest are two adult households or

families. We had no student or intern members last year.

Our Membership is Aging

30% of member units have children high school age or younger

70% of member units are adult-only households

62% of members are over age 43

44% of members are eligible for Mavens (are over age 55)

Jewish families in our Temple community are having fewer children. And fewer young families are joining our Temple

This is a national trend

The average number of children per household (under 19) is 1.67

Families in our Temple community are less motivated to send their children to religious school. Preschool enrollment is

steady with many Jewish families

2015-2016: 73 children enrolled in religious school, across 48 families

2016-2017: 65 children enrolled in religious school, across 43 families

We had 9 B’nei Mitzvah students in 2016-2017 vs. 13 in 2012-2013

42 children enrolled in preschool across 38 families, 3 are Temple members and 13 have at least one Jewish

parent, but are not Temple members

Temple Auxiliary groups are increasingly critical to our membership and other Jews in our community

Also part of national trend

Brotherhood: 46 members, must be Temple member to join

Sisterhood: 105 members, 3 are not Temple members (3%)

Mavens: 73 members, 12 are not Temple Members (15%)

RABBI MARK D. COHN

The High Holy Days are Coming!!

And just like that, the Summer is over. It’s funny how the other three seasons of the

year don’t get quite the play that Summer does. And I understand why – largely

because of school summer vacation – but still I’m always amazed how there is this big

build up to the Summer and then re-entry to ‘regular’ life on the back side.

And so here we are – which means only one thing in a synagogue: THE HIGH HOLY

DAYS ARE COMING! And thank God they are coming because it gives us another

chance to check in with one another in a big way – through prayer, song, meditation,

study, and more! Think about those wonderful new machzorim and special Yom Kippur Afternoon or

Shabbat Shuvah programming as well as the fabulous Board Oneg on the night of Rosh HaShanah. Not

everyone will come to every service or program and not every program and service will speak magically

to us all. But the High Holy Days are a time for us to reset, renew, and re-envision what has been and

what is possible.

Our biblical ancestors called the first day of the seventh month, Yom Teruah (Day of Shofar Blasts) and

we call it Rosh HaShanah (Head of the Year). For our ancestors it was a time of calling out with the

shofar in order to remember the covenant with God, forged on the very mountain where the Temple

would come to stand. For us it is a time of hearing the echo of ages past through the voice of the shofar

and allowing that sound to RESOUND within our hearts and souls to propel us into the New Year with

strength and might.

Our biblical ancestors also called the 1st day of the seventh month, Yom Zikkaron (Day of Remembering).

For on that day we are to remember the covenant, remember our misdeeds, and remember the

goodness in our nature to return, repent, and renew. Our tradition calls on us to be mindful on a regular

basis. We are to pay attention to every act we do – from the moment we awaken to the moment we

fall to sleep. That intentionality and mindfulness can help us lead meaningful and enriching lives for

ourselves and everyone around us.

May these days leading up to entering into 5778 be filled with calm and reflection, repentance and

forgiveness, rejoicing and reconnecting.

B’Shalom,

COURTNEY ANTHONY, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

Live from New York: It’s Temple Emanuel !

I have always loved summer: sunny weather, travel, and the beach are some of my

favorite things. Since becoming Director of Education at Temple Emanuel, I have

also loved the summertime stretch of relatively quiet time to plan and get excited for

each new year of Religious School and Lifelong Learning. I work on developing our

curriculum, planning programs, and – very importantly – cleaning my office (it’s

usually in quite a state after nine months of constant activity during the school year).

This year, I tackled the very enjoyable summer project of planning our upcoming Havayah (grades 9-

12) trip to New York City. When I saw the Havayah students at Shabbat services in July and August,

they had lists of questions for me. Are we definitely going to Ellis Island? (Yes.) Which Broadway shows

are we going to see? (Come From Away and The Band’s Visit.) And – this was the most frequent and

urgent question – Are we going to eat at Katz’s Deli? (Of course!)

During our first Havayah trip to New York back in 2015, the students loved the museums, tours, and

theatre. Most of all, though, they loved being Jewish in New York City. At our regular Sunday classes,

the kids still talk about H&H Bagels on Shabbat morning, Katz’s Deli on Sunday afternoon, and the

astonishing number of synagogues we passed while walking around the city. For some, it was the first

time they had experienced that kind of immersion in a large, urban Jewish community. The memories

we made together will last a lifetime, for the students and for Rabbi Mark and me. We could not have

had a more meaningful group bonding or Jewish educational experience.

Traveling together is important for the teens, who are creating friendships and beginning to form their

Jewish identities as young adults. However, we don’t stop growing and learning once we reach

adulthood. Our newly expanded Lifelong Learning programming offers adults opportunities to ex-

plore and engage with Jewish religion, history, and culture. This year, we are bringing back popular

Lifelong Learning programs such as the 92nd Street Y series and Jewish literary study. We’re also intro-

ducing an exciting travel component that will include a day trip to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello on

April 8, 2018 and… you guessed it… a three-day New York City travel experience from June 15-17,

2018! After all, why should the teens get to have all the travel fun?!

Our congregational trip to New York will be open to all of our members – singles, couples, and fami-

lies. Everyone is welcome! The itinerary will feature cultural experiences such as the Lower East Side

Tenement Museum and a Broadway show, as well as delicious culinary experiences such as the

aforementioned Katz’s Deli. More details, including registration information, will be available soon. In

the meantime, I hope that you will save the dates, and let me know if you have any great recommen-

dations for places to see and food to eat! While three days is a limited time and we won’t be able to

see and do everything worthwhile in New York (that would take a lifetime!), the goal is to fit in as

much learning and fun as we can. I am open to input, and would love to hear from you.

I look forward to traveling together, and to another year of shared Jewish growth and experiences in

Religious School and at Lifelong Learning. As much as I really do love summer, I am now ready to

jump into this new academic year, with all its promise and potential!

REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT IN WINSTON-SALEM

The refugee resettlement project of Temple Emanuel, in partnership with Knollwood Baptist

Church, has assisted four refugee families, comprising 22 individuals, who are living in

Winston-Salem, three from Syria and one from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support to assist our families and those who will follow

them. Volunteers have helped with so many needs as members of Good Neighbor Teams

or by pitching in on an occasional project as needed. Special thanks to The Shalom Project

who opened their Clothing Closet. Temple Emanuel Preschool provided scholarships for

Summer Fun and the new Preschool term. Please keep those monetary donations coming

(noting “Refugee Resettlement Program” in the memo field). Click to make your online

donation via ChaverWeb for unusual or emergency refugee resettlement expenses.

Volunteers are needed to drive to drive young Ahmadi to Preschool on Tuesday and Thursday at 9AM and return him

home at 12 noon. Please call Herb Spindel to sign up (704) 301-1714. The family lives in The Ledges Apartments off of

Peters Creek Parkway near Academy Street, approximately 2 miles from temple.

Volunteers are also needed to drive to drive family members to medical and administrative appointments as well as

trips for food and personal needs. Please email Jean Fromson if you have time to provide transportation and welcome

our new community members.

We are going to try to form another Good Neighbor Team in the fall. If you are interested in being a part of a Good

MOORE ELEMENTARY FOOD PANTRY

Congregants generously provide 66 backpacks for students Thanks to the amazing generosity of our Temple Emanuel and Highland Presbyterian congregants, this

successful joint project surpassed our goals and provided 66 backpacks full of school supplies for the

Moore School students whose parents shop in our Food Pantry. Both purchases of supplies and your

generous monetary donations contributed to the project. Thanks to the Temple & Highland volunteers

who spent 4 hours sorting and bagging supplies. TODAH RABAH THANK YOU

The kids had huge smiles, as big as their backpacks, and the parents offered grateful thanks, as

temple volunteers helped the students begin their new school year with a backpack containing

grade-specific supplies of crayons, markers or colored pencils, dry-erase markers, highlighters, pencils,

erasers, a pencil box or pouch, glue sticks, notebooks, folders, loose-leaf binders & paper,

composition books and index cards.

In addition, hand sanitizer, tissues & zip-lock bags will be distributed to the teachers. We are also

grateful to Fain Office Supply for their donation of several boxes of materials for the students and teachers.

From Bob Schwartz, Temple Emanuel’s program co-director The Moore Food Pantry has gone paperless with electronic registration. The data collected will allow our clients to

use any food pantry in Forsyth County and will be a valuable resource when a child graduates from Moore School

and the family is no longer eligible to shop at our pantry. Thanks to the leadership of Lois Miller who coordinated our

hugely successful annual backpack school supply drive. Moore Magnet Elementary School has a new principal,

Adam Dovico, and I had a successful meeting with him on August 2. We will be recruiting new families starting in

September and will continue to serve families who are food insecure.

Our pantry and temple were honored to receive the Fain Social Justice Award. We are now in our 4th

year of operation and this award is a reflection of the collaborative effort with Temple Emanuel,

Highland Presbyterian Church, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and Moore Magnet Elementary School.

Sophie loves to help her school and community. She has volunteered at Cook Literacy Model

School, participated in set design at Summit and has volunteered at the Mistletoe Run. During the

summer, Sophie swims for the Sherwood Sharks and attends Camp Poyntelle Lewis Village in Pennsyl-

vania. During her free time she enjoys hanging out at the beach and pool, laughing with friends

wheel-throwing pottery, to creating pieces at the Olio Glassblowing Studio. Her favorite things include

reading, swimming, playing piano, snuggling her dog Caroline, and walking the neighborhood pugs.

Zoë and her family wish to extend a very special thank-you to Rabbi Mark Cohn, Ms. Courtney Anthony,

PRESCHOOL

Temple Emanuel Preschool had a wild and wonderful

summer. We had 7 weeks of art and science

activities, with plenty of time for outdoor pool and

playground time as well. Our only complaint was it was too hot!

Now we are back to our regular school year. All classrooms are at full

enrollment. We are settling back in, and look forward to our High Holy

Days. We do tons of art and craft activities, and learn about this special

time of year with Rabbi Mark and our teachers.
