NSCC launches new E-Billing product for our students - Effective with the Spring 2010 semester billing in December 2009, NSCC's Electronic Billing system will be the official means of generating tuition bills to our students. Paper bills will not be mailed. This change helps Student Financial Services meet the goals outlined in the College’s Green Initiative and will

provide our students with new convenient services that should enhance their interactions with our office. Please encourage students you interact with to look for more information at: http://www.northshore.edu/payonline/ Benefits of E-Billing In addition to receiving their bills on-line through their pipeline accounts students can also: • Authorize parents or third parties such as employers, to create their own E-bill profile and pay charges

on their behalf. • Set-up payment plans on-line that increase or decrease as they add or drop classes. Their authorized

users can also set-up a payment plan on their behalf. With this change, Student Financial Services staff will now see view student account information in the same format as students and their authorized users. This will reduce wait times for our students ans allow us to deliver information more clearly and accurately. We all know how stressful financing a college education can be, we are hopeful that these new options will reduce confusion, streamline service to our students and save trees for future generations. Please

help us reach these goals by encouraging our students to utilize these new and enhanced services. --Stephen Creamer, Dean of Student Financial Services

5th Annual New Orleans Labor of Love Service Trip - The students in this photo have just completed 7 hours of training in preparation for our 5th Annual New Orleans Labor of Love Service Trip. Standing from left to right: Henrietta Slocum, Erin Hanlon, Mirna Portillo,Emily Jones and Patricia Ready. Sitting from left to right: Jose Miranda, Spencer Ringwood, Rachel Conant, Joseph Basher and Clyde Sheppard. From January 4th to January 14th these students will be assisting Rebuilding Together and the Louisiana United Methodist Disaster Recovery Center to rebuild homes and neighborhoods. The work will be

physical and at times emotional. Sadly, many areas still do not have electricity or water and are very much in need of our support. These students will also have the opportunity to develop new friendships and gain a deeper understanding of social issues, as well as increase their knowledge of self. In order to minimize the costs associated with this trip, we are once again hosting a pizza/comedy fund raising event on Sunday, December 6th at Prince Pizza in Saugus. This fun-filled event will enable you to meet the student team members, eat unlimited pizza, have a few good laughs, enter some raffles and possibly win a door prize or two while contributing to a great cause! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and are now available at Student Life DB132 and LW171. Checks may be made payable to NSCC Foundation and may be tax deductable with a reference to Hurricane Katrina on the memo line of your check. Please consider treating yourself to a night out by joining us in our efforts to help others and bring your friends! Thank you in advance. --Lisa Milso, Director, Student Life November Fiscal Fitness Newsletter – Attached to the Bulletin is the November issue of the Fiscal Fitness newsletter. --Trish Callahan, Fiscal Affairs

Noted Author’s Book Available At NSCC Bookstore - Those of you who were fortunate enough to attend the presentation of “Voices from the Silence” in October were no doubt impressed with the depth and scope of the poet’s voice. Jean Wood and Wendell Harris gave an extremely powerful performance reading from Jean’s book Prisms which deals with all aspects of domestic violence. Their performances on the Danvers and Lynn campuses were in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness month, and were very well attended. We have received word from both staff and students that they were unable to purchase the book at the time of the reading, but would like to do so, and we’d like to let you know that Prisms is available for sale in our bookstore for $15.00 a copy. Again, we’d like to thank everyone for their support of the event. --Resources Against Violence (RAV)

Brian Cranney, owner of Cranney Companies speaks with Tech Prep students - Tech Prep coordinator Susan Curry and Tech Prep Support counselor Maura Abramo recently took a group of eight students from the Salem High School vocational program to visit Brian Cranney, president of Cranney companies, pictured center in a green shirt. The purpose of this visit was to connect students in the electrical, HVAC, and plumbing shops to career opportunities that are available in the electrical industry. Cranney discussed his experiences with the students and gave them advice on putting together a resume and how to

follow up. A huge advocate of vocational programs, Cranney has hired 25 students from this program over the years. Said Cranney, “I am a firm believer that we need to be active mentors for the future of the Service industry, without these educational programs the work force would be in trouble.” NSCC’s Secondary Post-Secondary CVTE Linkage Initiative or Tech Prep program works with eight North Shore vocational schools to link high school work to post-secondary opportunities such as college, apprenticeships and jobs. The Tech Prep staff coordinates career exploration activities for all eight vocational high school programs that have shops with articulated classes including automotive, culinary, business, health sciences, and criminal justice. For more information on the Tech Prep program, contact Susan Curry, x5521 or Maura Abramo, x5545. Kudos Korner – NSCC student Jared Carribis has just published his first book, One Fan’s Story: If This Hat Could Talk. He began by writing a Red Sox blog, which evolved into his thinking about writing a book. He took one semester off to work full time on the book, was honored by the Red Sox who named him "Governor of Red Sox Nation" for the state of Massachusetts. Jerry Remy, announcer for the Red Sox wrote the intro to the book. The book is a wonderful trip through Red Sox history, with lots of humor and is not just about baseball. It is about pursuing your dreams, setting goals, and reaching them.

Recent paintings and drawings by Joe Capachietti will be on display at the Lynn Campus library through December 5th. The NSCC community is invited to a reception that will be held for him in the Lynn library reading room, on Friday, November 20 from 1 – 2:30pm. Joe was a professor of drawing and anatomical drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts for nearly 40 years. He is generally acknowledged to be a master figure draftsman and artist. Among his many artistic accomplishments, while serving in the US Marine Corps in the early 1950’s, he won a competition to help redesign the Marine Corps ring, for

which he designed the bas relief of the Iwo Jima monument. Joe was not only an instructor of mine but has been a kind and close friend for over 35 years. This is a wonderful show and I hope many of you will be able to stop by to see the achievements of this master artist. Painting pictured is Karen’s Sunflower --Jim Chisholm, Art Instructor
