Call for 2015 Commencement Speaker Suggestions
Who would you like to see as Commencement Speaker at North Shore
Community College’s 49th annual graduation ceremony in May of 2015? Who
do you feel would be inspirational, motivating and enjoyable for our
graduates? Who would be most appropriate as we celebrate the college’s 50th Anniversary this year?
Please submit your suggestions to the 2015 Commencement Committee,
along with a brief explanation of why you are recommending the person(s) and their qualifications to
serve as Commencement speaker to Dr. Joanne Light, Interim Vice President of Student Enrollment
Services, at [email protected] Ideas are welcome from all students, faculty, staff, and alumni and should be received by Friday, December 5, 2014.
Ideally the Commencement speaker should have a connection to the college or be able to address topics of relevance to NSCC. Please consider the following when making your suggestions:
Outstanding or innovative achievement of some kind (in academics, business, politics, science, the
arts, for example)
Humanitarian deeds
The extent to which the candidate’s achievement represents sustained efforts over the course of a
career
Connection with NSCC
Degree to which the candidate’s activities have touched the lives of others
The extent to which the candidate represents an outstanding model for our graduates
The honor brought to NSCC should the candidate accept our invitation
The NSCC Commencement speaker is chosen through an annual selection process that gives the college
community the opportunity to offer speaker suggestions. All names submitted to [email protected]
will be compiled in an alphabetical, unranked list and shared with a speaker selection committee.
Following a thoughtful deliberation process, the committee will present a final list of proposed speakers to President Gentile, who will review the options and make a final decision.
Please note that Commencement will be held on May 21, 2015. Thank you for your participation in suggesting the 2015 Commencement speaker!

Congratulations to
Professor Moonsu Han and the
students in the Economics and
Finance Club on being the
ONLY community college team
to compete in this year’s Fed
College Challenge at the
Federal Reserve Bank of
Boston.
While they didn’t make the
finals – Bentley University took
first place – Professor Han
said, “It went really well and,
even though we didn’t win, all
of us are very happy.”
Student Julia Lyons
acknowledged, "At the
beginning of the semester,
when we first started meeting,
I had no idea what was going
on. The readings and Fed's
press releases looked like they were written in a foreign language. Now looking back at everything we
learned I can now confidently say that I have a concrete understanding of monetary policy and the world
of economics and how it plays a role in my own life. I am most certainly smarter than before I joined the
Fed Challenge team."

Technology Across the Curriculum Grant Applications: The TAC Committee invites all full-time and
adjunct faculty and all professional teaching staff to submit applications to develop a Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) project in the spring of 2015 with implementation in the summer or fall of 2015.
Fall application materials are being distributed in October, and proposals are due by 11:59PM on Tuesday, November 18th. There are two types of TAC applications: one for faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses and one for those wishing to develop projects that integrate technology into their curriculum. For faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses, there are two separate applications, one for faculty new to online course development, and
one for faculty who have already developed online courses at NSCC. 1. If you would like to develop an online/hybrid course: Please contact Andrea Milligan ([email protected]) or Lance Eaton ([email protected]). They will explain the process and discuss the expectations, have you complete some short readiness activities, and give you an application. You will also need to discuss your plans with, and get the approval of, your Division Dean.
The design and development phase for faculty new to teaching an online/hybrid course at North Shore
Community College begins with a 6 week online course, Teaching and Learning Online. This online course
will run January 2 – February 15, 2015 (for fall 2015 and spring 2016 courses) and May 15 – June 28,
2015 (for spring 2016 courses only). Applications and process are available during your consultation with Andrea Milligan or Lance Eaton. 2. If you would like to develop a project integrating technology into the curriculum:
Apply for a TAC grant. The application also includes project ideas and the description of the TAC process. Please read all of the materials before completing your application. Division Deans and Department Chairs would appreciate an email letting them know about your ideas so they can support your efforts. To submit an application: Please send your application as an attachment to [email protected] by 11:59PM on Tuesday, November 18,
2014. No late applications will be accepted under any circumstances. Notification of awards will be made before the end of the semester. Please note:
These application materials are also available on Pipeline. To access, go to the My Northshore tab and click
the Technology Across the Curriculum link (left column in the Faculty Resources box.) Applicants need not have high level experience using technology, but because the TAC grant is becoming
highly competitive, we urge applicants to prepare their applications carefully, making sure the descriptive narrative is thorough and clear. We are also, of course, interested in the applicant’s motivation and willingness to think about how technology can improve his/her teaching.
Finally, we would be delighted to answer any questions or discuss application ideas.
TAC Materials:
1. TAC Project Ideas: http://goo.gl/oGb6z
2. Explanation of the TAC Process and Requirements: http://goo.gl/z9qt8 3. TAC Application for Technology Project: http://goo.gl/2WrD7 4. TAC Appliction for Online/Hybrid Course: Please contact Andrea Milligan or Lance Eaton
We hope you will consider applying for a TAC grant and look forward to assisting you in any way we can in that process. --Andrea Milligan, Director of Instructional Technology and Design, and Terri Whitney, TAC Coordinator and Professor of English

No Leaf Left Behind - On November 4th, our
students from the Bridge to the Future
program spent the afternoon doing community
service with Gerard "Sully" Sullivan's Current
Events class. They worked hard raking leaves
and cleaning up debris at a Lynn group home
that is run by the Northeast Arc.
The yard was leaf-free when the students left and
there were over 20 leaf bags waiting to be picked
up curbside!
We are now accepting applications for the 2015
academic year of Bridge to the Future. For more

Support Team, are here to assist your students. As a reminder of our
services, we offer a ‘mindful moment’ tip bimonthly for you to consider
and, as appropriate, pass on to your students. For student referrals or
faculty/staff consultations, please contact Debbie in Lynn at ext. 6615 or
email [email protected]. Or Donna in Danvers at ext. 4245 or

Ebola College Advisory -On August 20, 2014, the Boston Public Health
Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued an Ebola
advisory for colleges and universities. Although the likelihood of becoming
infected with the Ebola virus is very small, the college is being asked to reach
out to every community member who has traveled to an Ebola affected area
within the last 21 days.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Ebola poses little risk to the U.S. general population
and is not contagious until symptoms appear. It is spread through direct contact with blood or body
fluids of an infected person or with objects like needles that have been contaminated with the virus.
The countries primarily affected by Ebola at this time include Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The CDC
recommends avoiding any unnecessary travel to these countries until further notice. For travel outside of
the U.S. during the upcoming holidays, go to the CDC website for specific advice and travel guidelines:
http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/advice-for-colleges-universities-and-students-about-ebola-in-west-
africa
Remember - if you have traveled to an Ebola affected area within the last 21 days, please contact
NSCC Health Services immediately for evaluation:
Brianne Duff, MSN, RNC, HN-BC, Danvers, DB108, 978-739-5469, [email protected]
Elissa Al-Chokhachy, MA, RN, FT, Lynn, LW126, 781-477-2197, [email protected]
Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a safe and healthy college environment for all.
