DESCRIPTION

Just because it is autumn, things aren't slowing down in Kiama. The water temperature is just right for a swim, there's lots of great music on offer and one of our own might just win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Inside this issue

There must not have been

a babysitter free in town

on the night of the Jamie’s

Wish Fundraiser Night, as

parents of our town’s young

families came out in force

to help one of their own.

Two hundred and sixty

people attended the event,

which amazing raised

over $90,000 in cash and

in-kind donations to help

the Pignataro Family finish

renovations on their house.

It was an emotional night

for Jamie and Chrissy as

they felt the love and supp-

ort of the community.

Last September, Jamie

unexpectedly had a massive

seizure and finished the day

learning that the cause was

a tumour covering a quarter

of his brain.

The next month followed

with a craniotomy and the

dreadful news that Jamie's

tumour was a grade 3

cancer. Treatment and

chemotherapy are on-going.

Chrissie also has a chronic

illness, and they have two

young boys.

The renovations

that Jamie had

been slowly doing

to their house

ground to a halt,

and his wish is to

leave his family

with a renovated

house to live in if

the worst happens

to him.

Twenty volun-

teers from the Lions Club

served food and drinks,

as well as giving the family

$1000 for food expenses.

The crowd was entertained

by generous emerging musi-

cians Emma Jene, Ben

Tyler, Sean Emmett and his

band The Flux Capacitors,

and Kevin Sullivan (who

also managed the sound

and lighting).

Over $50,000 in pro bono

goods and services were

donated for the house reno-

vations. The family want

to acknowledge Steve’s

Joinery, Superior Stone

Unanderra and Caeserstone,

Coastal Stairs, Kiama Cur-

tains, Hanlon Windows

and Appliances Online,

and a very generous local

building firm that wishes

to remain anonymous.

Key local businesses,

including Cook Building

and GRIT, as well as private

donors generously donated

prizes and services for bal-

loons, auctions and a silent

auction. Many generous

people unexpectedly going

home with holidays in Bali,

sporting memorabilia and

other sought after options.

The Jamie’s Wish Event

Committee, a group of dedi-

cated working mums and

friends made up of Nicki

Wilson, Oriella Muller,

Melasande Carey, Melissa

Allen, Muriel Birbeck, Erin

Brown and Belinda Sullivan,

is full of praise for the

night’s event partners -

Crooked River Wines,

Kiama Lions, WinTV, IGA,

The Bugle, and Donna Leak

De'vine Wedding Events

and Michelle (My Sweet

Style) who generously

donated event theming.

When Jamie got up to

thank everyone, there was

barely a dry eye.

The NSW Minister for Lands has finally

given approval for the Centenary of

ANZAC emblem to be applied to the

historic Kiama Lighthouse.

The proponents of the initiative,

the Kiama-Jamberoo RSL President

Ian Pullar and Councillor Dennis Seage,

are ecstatic at getting the green light

even though the approval is for an

initial two years. They applied to

have it stay up for the entire length

of the First World War, so it would

come down on the 11th November

2018, 100 years after Armistice Day.

A review will be conducted to see if

the period should be extended.

“The Federal Department of Veter-

ans Affairs (DVA) approved the use of

the logo on the Lighthouse 18 months

ago, subject to approval from the

NSW Minister,” explains Ian Pullar.

“This approval has now gone back to

DVA for their information and formal

acceptance, although it is expected

to be a formality.”

As the pair were keen to have it up

in time for the anniversary of the start

of the War last year, the logo will be

applied to the iconic lighthouse as

soon as possible. They are very keen

for it to be done in time for ANZAC

Day, as this year’s Dawn Service is

being held at Blowhole Point, the site

of Kiama’s first Dawn Service.

Lighthouse tribute clears final hurdle

Jamie’s Wish gets a step closer

The family’s doctor, Niamh

Sheridan of Kiama Medical

Centre, helped to sell fundrais-

ing balloons, as well as speaking

about her experiences with

the family.

Help Gerringong kids revamp their library The organisers of Gerringong Public

School’s Fete have organised a great

pre-election coup - sitting Member Gareth

Ward as a sitting duck in their dunk tank.

While teachers are usually the favourite

to tip into the water, they think that Gareth

will be the big attraction this year.

Fetes are held every three years, and

the aim of this one is to raise money for

the revamp of the school’s library. The plan

is to create an up-to-date learning hub for

children and teachers, complete with comfy

lounges, new technology and more.

Apart from the traditional fare of carnival

rides, white elephant stalls, chocolate wheel

and a wide variety of homemade food,

there will be an auction of art donated by

local artists and a photo booth.

“The community support has been over-

whelming,” says Lizzie Smith. “Local busi-

nesses both big and small have been very

generous with their donations, and we are

being supported by local community groups

with the Lions and Rotary clubs volunteer-

ing their time on the day. The parents and

children really appreciate their help.”

Details: Sat 14 March,

10-3pm, Gerringong Public School.

Gareth will start getting wet at 11am.

Our very own 747

747s are big. Very big. If you haven’t noticed yet, you can see the tail of the

HARS Museum’s new addition from the hill going down to the Shellharbour

roundabout. Thousands of people turned out to watch it land, and the Museum

got national media coverage with its arrival.

It is sure to be a big attraction at the Wings over the Illawarra Airshow, on

the first weekend in May. Last year’s show had to be cancelled due to appalling

weather that left virtually all of the planes grounded. There will be more de-

tail about the Airshow in future editions, but we know that many of you will

want to save the date.

Songs engraved in our hearts This is one time when we hope you are reading

this before the afternoon of the 14th of March.

As part of its

commemorations

of the Centenary of

ANZAC, Jamberoo

CWA is presenting

an afternoon of the

Songs that Won the

Wars. Songs such

as It’s a Long Way

to Tipperary, Pack

up your Troubles in your old Kitbag and The White Cliffs

of Dover will be but a few for you to sing along with.

Local songstress and music teacher, Angela Quinn,

has brought together a group of wonderful local artists

to present renditions of many of the songs that kept our

soldiers company on their long journey away from home.

There will be visits by The Andrews Sisters, Lili Marlene

and Vera Lynn.

The MC of the afternoon will be Kiama’s own Barrie

McNicoll, who will introduce the program he and Angela

have put together. Barrie has many years of on-stage

experience and was the Founder-Conductor of the Blue

Mountains Musical Society. Come along and sing-a-long.

Details: Sat 14 March, 2pm, Jamberoo School of the Arts.

Tickets $20, including a genuine CWA afternoon tea.

Tickets from Elders Real Estate, Jamberoo or

phone Mia 42361913 or Sue 42360045.

Get rid of your clutter or grab a bargain Second Hand Saturday,

Kiama’s big community

car boot sale, has become a

not to be missed event.

You can sell, trade or

give away your unwanted

items to assist in reducing

the amount of material

going to landfill.

Details: Ellie will be cutting her hair on 24 March.

To sponsor her, drop into Burnetts on Barney,

Milk & Honey, the Little Blowhole Café or

Elders Jamberoo, or go online to

my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ellieburnett

Ellie is shaving for a cure Fourteen year old Ellie Burnett is bravely going to shave off

all her long, curly hair to raise money and awareness for the

Leukaemia Foundation. She’s already reached her target of raising

$5000, but would love to make it more.

Why would a healthy young Jamberoo girl who loves playing

hockey and show-jumping want to go bald to raise money?

Five years ago a Kiama family friend, Lukas Buchner, was

diagnosed with leukaemia and Ellie was aware of the toll his

illness took on his whole family. Lukas was only four at the time.

His is one of the beautiful stories and, thankfully, Lukas is now in

good health and he will celebrate his 9th birthday later this month.

Not all are so fortunate. Every day, thirty-one Australians find

out they have leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood

disorder. Most lose their hair during treatment. Some also lose

their battle - blood cancers are the third biggest cause of death in

Australia. The recent passing of twenty year old Ashleigh Collins

of bone cancer has again struck home to our community how real

this possibility is.

Her hair will be donated to make wigs for those undergoing

treatment.

Seniors encouraged to ‘be inspired’ The 2011 Census showed that 35.6 per cent of Kiama residents were ‘Seniors’

at over 55. But when you add in the people who were between 50 and 55 at

that time, roughly 44 percent of us qualify as Seniors now!

So many of you may be interested in getting along to the variety of activities

that have been organised by Council for this year’s Seniors Week.

Ana de la Vega’s family moved their home

to Kiama when she was six months old.

She started playing the flute when she was

seven, and left for Europe to further her

musical career in 2005.

Since then, although she has been back for

many holidays, she has never come back to

perform.

All that is set to change with a series of

seven concerts organised in places that are

dearest to her heart - with Kiama taking

pride of place.

“I want to do what I do in the place where

I come from,” she says. Performing with

her is renowned German violinist/violist

virtuoso, and fiancé, Daniel Röhn.

There most recent performances include

in Wigmore Hall London, with the Berlin

Philharmonic, BBC Radio3 Live perform-

ances, at The Southbank Centre London

and at the Lucerne Festival as Orchestra

Soloists. In the coming season she will

perform as soloist with the English Cham-

ber Orchestra in London.

Their Kiama concert will be a one hour

program of works for flute and violin,

and flute and viola by Beethoven, Leclair,

Hoffmeister, Mozart as well as solo works

by Bach, Ysaye and Debussy.

Get into

your Garden with Elizabeth Burnett

It is autumn, even if it

barely feels like it yet on

the coast, so you need

to start behaving like an

autumn gardener…NOW!

It’s time to trim your

hedges before winter slow-

down, it’s time to feed

your plants before they go

a bit dormant over winter

and it’s time to get those

peas, broccoli, cauliflower

and radishes in the ground.

But first you need to get

your green manure in.

What the hell is green

manure? Glad you asked.

At Burnetts on Barney

we’re pretty excited that

we’ve now got green

manure available. Why?

Because it’s good.

We’re not saying that so

you buy it – to be honest

we’d be just as happy to

take it home to our own

gardens because it’s such

an under-publicised good-

guy in the garden that

we’re happy to keep it to

ourselves.

But some of you have

asked for it and so now

we’re sharing.

So, green manure crops

are cool season green

manure crops that are

fast-growing plants you

sow in about March to

provide foliage which

smothers weeds, roots

which prevent soil erosion

and then when they are

dug into your vegie bed

they add valuable nutri-

ents back into the soil.

Win, win, and win.

What do you need to do?

Not much. Just plant the

seeds in rows in your vegie

garden, let them grow up

then cut them down and

leave them to wilt. Dig

them in a bit later.

Ideally, do all this two

weeks before you plant

your autumn vegies but

time waits for no-one and

your soil, and later your

vegies, will thank you

whether you plant them

now or soon and whether

your vegies go in with

them or later.

Yes, we’ve got green

manure by the bag, and

yes, we’re happy to share.

Blowhole Big Fish Classic time again Organisers of this year’s Kiama Leagues Club Blow-

hole Big Fish Classic are hoping for good weather

this year, as last year’s event was re-scheduled from

April to June due to storms.

The early Easter means that the competition is

being held at the end of March this year rather

than April. Entries must be in by Friday 20th March

(or by the following Friday with a $30 late fee).

Competitors must be an affiliated game fishing club.

These days in gamefishing, over 90 per cent of

the fish caught are tagged and released, with a few

larger fish captured. Competitors can head north to

Stanwell Park or south to Cape St George.

Love taking photos?

Keen to get more out of

your camera? Want to take

beautiful images, not just

nice pics?

The Jamberoo Camera

Collective has been formed

to bring together like-

minded camera lovers who

are interested in learning

about night photography,

taking sports pics, photo-

shop and storing images,

photography of family and

our local landscape plus

lots more.

The Collective’s aim is

to learn a little, and share a

lot, between keen but green

beans and long-time lens

lovers. There will be photo

shoots, monthly guest

speakers and fun getting to

know more about photogra-

phy in an informal setting.

The first session will

focus on basic camera

techniques to help you

become comfortable,

confident and creative with

the tools you’ve already got.

The meetings will be

every third Thursday of

the month in Jamberoo and

there are no prerequisites

other than a love of the idea

of photography. Ideally

you’ll have a digital SLR

camera and instruction

manual, but a good point

and shoot camera will do.

Details: The first meeting

of the Jamberoo Camera

Collective is 6-8pm

on Thurs 19 March

at Jamberoo Bowling Club

(upstairs room). Cost only

$10. To find out more call

Linda Faires 0401 658 033,

Burnett on 0412 324 548

to the Kiama Leagues Club

at 7.30pm on any 1st or 3rd

Christmas in Meguro, Tokyo 2014

Most mornings we would head off from

our apartment to the local cafe and

bakery via the back lanes and channel

walk along the Meguro River.

The Meguro River walk is a well-

known Tokyo destination during the

Cherry Blossom season. Along the way

we would spot fresh water turtles,

wild ducks and water birds. Hang on,

this couldn’t be inner city Tokyo -

well yes it is.

The prefecture of Meguro is predom-

inately residential, quite and family

oriented but only minuets away by

train from Shibuya Crossing, for those

who have seen the movie Lost in

Translation.

We have become addicted to Christ-

mas in Tokyo,

this is our

third Christ-

mas sojourn.

The food,

the eating

experience, the visual and design

feast, the extraordinary courtesy and

politeness by which everything is done

and transacted - we love it, we are

turning Japanese.

Our local café, Switch Coffee, is

standing room only a small one room

former residential home converted to

an artisan coffee roaster. The owner

and barista Masahiro makes perfect

flat whites. Of course he was Mel-

bourne trained.
