The holiday season is upon us and I want to take this time to thank all of our members, volunteers, staff, Board and supporters. As I reflect on the past year, I am appreciative of all the great people I’ve come to know and work with.

I have much to be thankful for this season, and I want to give a special nod to the staff of 14 talented and dedicated men and women who work at The Chamber. Our

team works hard to serve all our members and business community while moving our organization forward. I know without a doubt that a large part of our success is due to their efforts, and I feel blessed to work with them every day.

We also have a superb group of 16 individuals who serve on our Board of Directors. These business leaders dedicate their time and expertise to guide and champion our efforts, and I’m proud to have their support.

I’m always continuously amazed at the incredible team of volunteers we have. From our ambassadors that conduct member celebrations and support our businesses, to our committee chairs

and members that make our events and programs some of the best around, to our task forces that fight for important community and legislative issues. We wouldn’t be where we are without the work that all of these people do.

Of course, I also owe a huge thank you to the more than 2,100 member businesses and 98,000 individuals too. You are the reason we do the work that we do, and I am proud to be a part of the vibrant business landscape in the community. We have an incredible group in this region, and that is the best Christmas present to me.

The holiday season is always a great time of year, and it inspires me to reflect and look ahead. We’ve had a great year at The Chamber, with record event attendance, new events and programs, and several national guests to the community.

I can’t wait to see what 2016 brings. You can bet that we’ll be kicking the year off with some pretty exciting plans.

I wish you all the very happiest of holidays and thank you, sincerely, for your membership.

Six Lessons Learned from Rudy GiulianiOn November 11 – Veteran’s Day – 1,000 people gathered at the Ramada Plaza & Suites to hear a keynote message from former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani for The Chamber’s sixth annual Voices of Vision. The event was sold out shortly after announcing Giuliani as the keynote speaker, and anticipation to hear his message was high. The luncheon event started with a welcome and thank you message from Craig Whitney, who introduced Senator John Hoeven, who recognized our veterans and got the crowd ready for Rudy.

Giuliani’s message, titled “Principled Leadership: In the Face of Change and Crisis” focused on the lessons learned as he revitalized New York City and pulled through the crisis of 9/11 and how business leaders can use those same principles to lead their own teams and organizations.

Giuliani started by sharing his perspective of 9/11, from the morning leading up to the crisis, through the shock of responding to the disaster. His tale was fascinating and touching, particularly the impact that was left with him by witnessing a man on the 100th floor fall from the North Tower.

While Giuliani also spoke some politics and thoughts on the upcoming presidential candidates, the point of his message was effective leadership, and he shared six specific lessons with attendees.

1. If you’re going to be a leader, you have to have a strategy and know where you’re going.

2. Dig down and find something good. Make the situation better, no matter how bad it is.

3. Have courage. Be willing to fail and take risks. 4. Work hard, plan and practice.5. Have good people around you. Know what you don’t know.

Don’t be arrogant.6. Be a good communicator and motivate others.

During the event, we asked the audience to weigh in with their suggestions for speakers next year. Names ranged from politicians to entertainers, sports stars and business leaders. Just some of the suggestions included:

We’re grateful for everyone that helped make this event possible, from our generous sponsors, to attendees, volunteers and the Ramada itself. We had a great time and are excited for another great Voices of Vision next year!

State of the Cities

During the 2016 State of the Cities address, we’ll be joined by the mayors of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth, who will share not only their vision, but highlight the hurdles and issues that will affect our cities in the upcoming year. You’ll get the answers to the questions most affecting your business and organization and can weigh in with your opinion through live polls.

Last year, you said that workforce and flood protection were the most important issues affecting the community. Will it be the same this year?

North Dakota̓s Response to EPA̓s Costly Clean Power Plan

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Clean Power Plan in early August, and it sparked concern from the state of North Dakota and many in the industry since it looks so different than the early proposal. In 2014, the EPA told the state of North Dakota that they would require an 11% cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 to meet new EPA-imposed national goals. They offered explanation on how they studied each state’s unique circumstances and resources. One year later, the EPA changed its tune and is now requiring North Dakota to implement a 45% reduction instead with little to no explanation behind the change in thought. This new rule does not bode well for North Dakota and many are scratching their heads trying to understand it. For most consumers of electricity, the price will rise significantly, potentially costing residents of the state $400 to $450 million annually to comply with the latest version of the Clean Power Plan.

To dive into these rules and what they mean for our region, we’ll be joined by a panel of experts to break it all down. Join us with Commissioner Julie Fedorchak, chair of the North Dakota Public Service Commission, Dave Glatt, Environmental Health Section chief, North Dakota Department of Health, Mac McLennon,

MinnKota Power, and Assistant Attorney General Maggie Olson.

A Look at ND’s Oil MarketWith a new year comes a new outlook

on one of North Dakota’s most valuable commodities. We’ve seen the numbers slowly decline in production and exports, but what does that all mean? The uncertainty of the market, created by all sorts of economic and social stressors, is felt across the state. Join us on Tuesday,

January 5 to hear from Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, to hear his thoughts on what should be expected with the oil market this year.

A Look at Refugee Resettlement in the AreaSell-Out Crowd Gathers to Hear from LSS

It’s a topic that many are buzzing about lately, both nationally and locally, and with so many questions, interpretation and discussion, Eggs & Issues was the perfect forum to shine some light on this. On the morning of November 3, over 200 attendees gathered at the Radisson Hotel Fargo to hear first-hand from Lutheran Social Services (LSS) CEO Jessica Thomasson about the process refugees undertake to make it to the area, what happens when they arrive and how they make an impact here. The talk helped set the facts straight and dispel any misconceptions.

After an overview of LSS’ history and mission, Thomasson dived right in to the issues,

Over the course of the next hour, Thomasson enlightened the crowd with a plethora of facts regarding refugees in our nation and in our own community.

▪ The U.S. State Department, with various other volunteer agencies, determines where refugees will be settled, based largely upon housing availability and family connections.

▪ Communities have to be approved resettlement cities. In North Dakota, there are four approved cities: Fargo, West Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck.

▪ LSS has resettled about 400 people per year over the last 19 years. So far this year, they have resettled 506 people.

▪ Of the 506 people resettled this year so far, they have consisted of 205 families, 40% were children, and 85% of the time, people rejoined families from across 10 home countries.

▪ In the first 30 days after their arrival, refugees begin community orientation and English classes, prepare for work, connect with community services and enroll their children in school.

▪ Refugees do not receive free housing or free cars. They do get an apartment with a few basic household items, but they are responsible for paying their own housing costs, and receive at most a four-month bus pass.

▪ Refugees pay the same local, state and federal taxes like all other citizens.

▪ All refugees are screened by the U.S., Department of Homeland Security before entering a new country, and violent aggressors are not allowed.

▪ No data exists to support the notion that refugees commit more crimes than any other group of people.

▪ There is no correlation between a person’s immigrant status and criminality.

▪ Refugee resettlement is not a profit center for LSS.

For more details on this topic, please visit LSSND.org.

[This] can be a very complicated issue to understand, You’re hearing the words – migrant crisis, Islamic state, refugee,

illegal – and it’s not a surprise that people have questions. It is a complex world we are living in right now.

The work that we do isn’t always popular, but we try to make sure it is always thoughtful and is always helping people thrive.

- Jessica Thomasson

Last year Merriam Webster’s dictionary stated that “culture” was the most popular word of the year. Now it has become one of the most important words in corporate board rooms, and for good reason. We have a retention crisis. New Dale Carnegie Training research shows that culture, engagement and employee retention are now the top talent

challenges facing business leaders. More than half of business leaders rate this issue “urgent” – up from only around 20% last year.

Join us for an interactive discussion with area leaders who are placing an emphasis on culture and learn the business results they’re seeing. Tonya Stende, chief engagement officer at Dale Carnegie Business Group of ND, will help attendees define culture and what it means for their organization, as well as understand the connection between an individual’s actions and organizational culture. You’ll be able to identify steps you can take to be the chief culture officer of your organization by living your business values daily.

Make a good first impression but leave a lasting one. Have up-to-date technology and a helpful website. Be personable. Empower your employees. Go the extra mile. Give thanks. These are some of the most-shared customer service tips, but how do area businesses handle customer service? In this session, we’re asking you!

Join us in this lively interactive event where the audience

members are the panelists. We’ll go around the room and share all of our best tips for customer service until we get to 60. By the end, attendees will have learned valuable and proven tips from other leaders in the region. We highly encourage participation in this event, but you’re welcome to sit back and soak up all the wisdom from your fellow business leaders too.

Tips for a Rockin’ Routine at Last Month’s TrainingWe’re probably all familiar with the nagging feeling that time got away from us or we lost track of our big-picture goals. Steve Hallstrom, president and managing partner at Flag Family Media, has been there too, and at our November 18 Business Training session, he helped attendees conquer that very problem. His event, titled “Rock Your Routine – Taking Control of the Daily Grind” taught attendees easy tips for taking back control of their days, staying on task and building better relationships.

Hallstrom shared his own strategy for turning busy-ness into productivity, which was to think big and work small. Examples of this include finding out when you are most productive during the day and tackling your most important tasks then, setting aside time to focus without distractions, rewarding your successes, reading helpful articles or books each day, getting to know your co-workers, thanking your customers and reaching out to new leads.

Thank you to Hallstrom for sharing his knowledge and experience, and thanks to the Ramada for another delicious meal, festive decorations and great event.

You-Turn: Get on the Road to Self-Empowerment There is a critic living within each of us; a voice waiting to take a bite out of our happiness and self-esteem in hopes that doing so will make it stronger. Unfortunately, it often does. Most of us unconsciously allow this critical voice its destructive rants. We’ve become accustomed to the things it says, and whether we like it or not, we assume

it is speaking the truth. It isn’t. Darcy Simonson, of Insights with Darcy, wants to help you take your power and joy back from the critic. In this interactive talk, Simonson will help you become conscious of your critical voice, identify its source, and compassionately reframe it in a way that empowers you and sets you free of your own internal critic.

Simonson is a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead and describes herself as the “master of the jack-of-all-trades” with a wonderfully varied career path. She is the author of “To Love

Your Life; Release What Was, Embrace What Is and Become Wildly Wonderful You” and the companion “Life-Workbook & Journal.” Through self-examination, intuition and training in hypnotherapy, meditation, stress management and energy healing, she’s guided thousands of people to explore their own mind, body and spiritual makeup. Simonson conducts Life-Lover Mastermind groups based on her book, and is in the process of creating meditation workshops for parents, teachers and children. She has 25 hypnosis and meditation mp3s and apps that empower adults and children to live consciously.

Women Connect

Jess Almlie’s “Magic” at October’s Event October’s Women Connect session was pure magic. Well, our speaker Jess Almlie from Discovery Benefits did reveal her childhood superhero name, “Magic Town” after all! Almlie was an engaging and inspirational speaker and taught all our attendees three solid strategies for learning to lead from any seat. These included learning to lead yourself well and to be the person you’d want to supervise; building authentic relationship capital; and knowing your who, why and daily win. Finally, she encouraged us to use “inspiraction,” in which you take what you’ve learned and turn it into action. Almlie also provided activities for attendees to share their current role, goals and action plan with a new friend, and it proved to be a valuable networking activity. She left us all very inspired and ready to lead!

Leadership Class Focuses on Innovation & Entrepreneurship

The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community is known for many things, but two qualities that we take the most pride in is our innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, which is exactly why the LFMWF class spent their day focusing on these topics. Graciously hosted by the Fargo Jet Center, Inc., we started our November 12 session off flexing the innovative parts of our brains with Carrie Leopold of Inspire Innovation Lab. She guided us along an interactive activity of building tents with a few wooden dowels, masking tape and some newspaper. While entertaining for all, it allowed the participants to think creatively to solve a new issue—a skill that is imperative in being a successful leader.

We switched gears to entrepreneurship in the afternoon where we heard how local business owners are thinking big. Dan Hurder, Great Plains Hospitality, Kristen Burbank, Mojo Fit Studios, Jake Clark, Fargo 3D Printing and Matt Lachowitzer, Matt’s Automotive Service Center, shared their entrepreneurial stories and answered questions from the class on taking the leap, building a customer base, creating a team of employees and what success really means to them.

After participants gave updates on their Community Change Initiatives, we headed downtown to hear from the owners of Drekker Brewing Company on what it’s like sharing ownership between four friends. The class concluded with a social where participants were able to sample a few of the brews Drekker has to offer.

Special thanks to Darren Hall and Kindra Mahler of Fargo Jet Center, Inc. for providing tours of the facility.

YEA! Class Learns from Business LeadersThe inaugural class of YEA! students have been busy meeting with various local business leaders and working on their own business plans. This past month, the class got the opportunity to have dinner and learn about food franchise operations at the Village Inn in Fargo. Reza Sakaki discussed with them the ins and outs of owning and operating a franchise business.

They also got to meet with Ashley Cossette and Jim Ramstad from Eide Bailly about what a CPA firm is and how important it is to their businesses. They reviewed major financial terms such as COGs, fixed costs, variable costs, start-up costs, gross and net profits. They continue to research costs associated with their product and will begin working on their economics of one unit, monthly sales projections and cost of supplies.

You often hear companies touting their “great culture” or “fun environment,” but it can be hard to know if those claims are based in reality or simply a marketing tactic. For Discovery Benefits though, there is no doubt that both of those phrases apply.

Discovery Benefits is well-known for its great work environment, with a work hard-play hard mentality, so it’s no surprise that they were named the Business of the Year winner at our most recent ChamberChoice Awards. For them though, it was a nice surprise and great honor to be named a finalist among a pool of other great nominees.

The company’s story starts in 1987 with flexible benefits administration, and in the years since, they’ve expanded to also offer COBRA, health savings accounts, HRAs, billing solutions, wellness plans and more.

One requirement to enter as a Business of the Year is to show stability or growth in sales, services and expanded products, and Discovery Benefits definitely fits that criteria. Stephanie Schroeder, the company’s communications director, shared that they are seeing tremendous growth year after year. They’ve even been recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies in America for three consecutive years!

While that in itself is quite the distinction, it certainly isn’t all that makes this innovative company unique. Schroeder says that in one word, “integration” defines what set Discovery Benefits apart. “We’re really proud of how we leverage technology platforms and partnerships with other vendors, to make it easier for our clients to send and receive information from us so that we have a more seamless experience for the end-user,” she said.

And then also, there’s that culture bit. “It’s something that you see when you walk through the doors,” Schroeder said, maintaining that a great culture starts with hiring great people.

Putting employees at the heart of everything they do is easy to see. Take a walk through the halls of Discovery Benefits and you’ll run into ping-pong tables, ice cream socials, and yes, even a slide. But it’s not just fun; they also offer a robust training catalog for learning opportunities, have an open-door policy with management and invest in employee empowerment.

Discovery Benefits believes in five core values: integrity, open communication, leadership, teamwork and continuous learning, and Schroeder says it’s much more than writing on the wall and is lived out in everything they do.

Just one example of that goes back to their open-door policy. Employees are empowered to bring ideas, questions or concerns to anyone at any level of the company. There’s even a submission form on the company’s Intranet page for those who prefer to submit questions directly to the CEO and VP of HR electronically, and they’re guaranteed a response.

It’s evident that the people at Discovery Benefits care about the work they do. Schroeder considers the benefits they provide the most rewarding aspect, since it gives consumers financial peace of mind in keeping health care costs affordable. “Health care can be a scary thing,” she said. “It can be expensive, and it can turn your world upside down. The fact that we can provide a cushion for people is really rewarding.”

While they obviously care deeply for their customers, the people at Discovery Benefits also care for their community. They hold an annual United Way campaign, which consists of a week long series of events that gets employees having some fun while helping those in need. They also have a YWCA donation bin on-site and encourage volunteerism. “We’re always looking for new ways to provide support to the community that supports us,” Schroeder said.
