Pastor’s Page Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go

from your country and your kindred

and your father’s house to the land

that I will show you. I will make of you

a great nation, and I will bless you,

and make your name great, so that you

will be a blessing. I will bless those

who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse;

and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went

with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he

departed from Haran.

Genesis 12:1-4 One of the things I hear very often in the church is “I’m too old. I’ve done my part. Let someone younger step up.” I also often hear from “retired” ministers that God keeps calling them. In Genesis,

2

God calls Abram out of Haran at age seventy-five. As one reads on in Genesis, you find that Abraham walked with God for another fifty-five years. Abraham is 130 years old when he is finally laid to rest. Apparently, service to the Lord is a lifetime occupation.

There are many reasons to not take on some responsibilities within the church, but age is not one of them. The question is not how old are you, but is God, through the Spirit, calling you. There are places where youth is desirable and other places where experience is valued. Both are necessary for the healthy functioning of the church. Paul uses the human body as a metaphor for the church. We are one church, one body but with many members. Each member of the body is important, but each has a different function. That is us.

We believe in the priesthood of all believers. That means we are active believers, not passive observers that simply let things pass by. So the next time you are asked to serve on a committee or help with a function, take a moment and ask is the Spirit is calling you.

Pastor Dave

Dear Dryland Members,

A couple of weeks ago I had to sadly announce that the two candidates our committee was very excited to hear in a neutral pulpit were no longer candidates. One chose a job much closer to their current home. The second began to question what direction they wished to go with their career and sadly demonstrated some qualities we did not think were in the best interest of Dryland. So our committee chose to not pursue them as a candidate any further. We re-opened our profile on the Conference website and are now receiving new profiles to review.

When the committee started this process we were told the usual minimum length of time it takes to find a new pastor is 18 months. We are approaching that minimum now. It is not an easy task. Please have faith that we are trying. We are being as transparent as the process allows. We all agreed to maintain the highest level of confidentiality as directed by the Penn Northeast Conference.

The committee recognizes how frustrating and disappointing our current position is. We committed ourselves to trying to find the best match for our church. In that spirit we press onward. We have faith that when the right person (the one the Lord is sending to us) comes our way things will progress quickly and without a hitch. We ask your continued support, patience and most of all prayers!

In Christian Faith and Love, Heidi Singer Committee Chairperson

MEET YOUR CONSISTORY Beth Peters-Ferrara – Consistory Secretary /

Christian Education Committee Chair Dr. Beth Peters-Ferrara has been overseeing Children & Youth Ministries and Christian Education at Dryland UCC since September 2014. Beth is a 1997 graduate from Nazareth High School. From there she went on to earn two BA degrees in Social Work and Psychology from Cedar Crest College, a M.Ed. in Secondary School Counseling from Lehigh University, an Ed.D. in Pastoral Community Counseling from Argosy University where she was also recognized in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for completing her doctorate program with a 4.0 GPA, and she has completed 27 credits towards a M.Div. degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. Beth is a proud member of Psi Chi, Alpha Psi Omega, Phi Alpha, and Alpha Kappa Delta. She is also a Board Member for the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is a certified Sexual Assault counselor through the PA Coalition Against Rape, is trained through the US Army Once Source program to work with veterans and their families in dealing with combat stress, deployment, and PTSD; and is a certified Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid Responder. Beth has spent time professionally at Cedar Crest College as an adjunct professor; First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem as the Mission and Outreach Coordinator, Youth Band Praise & Worship Leader, Youth Group Leader, and Emotional Wellness Committee Member; the Lehigh Valley Charter HS for the Arts as a Guidance Counselor; Monocacy Counseling Associates as a private therapist; Pinebrook Family Services as an At-Risk Summer Program Supervisor; Crime Victims Council of the

Lehigh Valley as a Rape/Sexual Assault counselor and Outreach Educator for community groups and college students; and numerous high schools throughout the Lehigh Valley as both a choreographer and theatre director. She is also a Disney Travel agent which she describes as her “own personal form of therapy!” Her research interests are broad as she is interested in studying numerous facets of mental illness and how the disease not only affects individuals that are struggling with a diagnosis, but also those that they are close to such as friends and family members. Specifically, she is interested in how mental illness affects those in the field of ministry. Her dissertation research was based upon depression, stress and burnout among pastors and how self-care techniques can combat these effects. Her reason for choosing this topic is due to the lack of research that has been done on how clergy deal with psychological strain specifically when it manifests as depression and/or suicidality. While previous studies have looked at the relationship between depression, suicidality and religious strain, this study looked more in depth at what causes a pastor to get into a downward spiral of depression leading to thoughts of and/or suicidal behavior, as well as what can be done to help combat this issue both societally and spiritually. Beth has had multiple articles published in the Kids Peace Journal Healing Magazine and is looking forward to the National publication of her dissertation. Beth is eager to continue studying and conducting research in order to publish more literature on important topics within the mental health field that include a Biblical/Spiritual component. Aside from career and academics – Beth does have a personal life! Beth is married to Shawn and they have 1 daughter (Lydia) and 2 sons (Carter and Brandon). Beth is an overly excited Disney fan and loves anything and everything about Disney – including going there as much as she possibly can! She is also a huge Red Sox fan, loves reading, theatre, music, singing and going for walks and runs. And of course spending time with her amazing Certified Therapy Dog Skyler! Beth is currently the Emotional Support Therapist at the Easton Arts Academy Elementary Charter School.

MUSIC and WORSHIP REPORT We have been blessed to have Susan Bostian

filling in as Choir Director, pianist, and organist over the past several months. She is now our official Music Director. Welcome! Also, thanks to Joyce Hittinger for making sure that we had vincas for Mother's Day and geraniums for Pentecost.

In discussing what the service will look like in the summer, we would like to reach out to all of our musicians. I know you are out there! Many of you are vocalists and instrumentalists who may not want to be a regular member of the choir or may be nervous about coming forward. We would love to hear you sing and play! SAFETY & SECURITY TASK FORCE REPORT The consistory approved the formation of a Safety & Security Task Force Committee to take a proactive stance against the following potential dangerous areas.

Current events in our nation regarding violent acts taking lives in our schools and churches. o Consistory approved locking doors 15

minutes after services start. We notified all outside groups to secure the doors after their activities begin as well.

Property loss due to theft.

Property loss due to fire. o In 2017, Dryland was very fortunate in

this area. An air handler motor was overheating. Fortunately, the kitchen

committee was coming in that morning and smelled a strong odor. Immediate investigation began to find the source of the odor and take corrective action to prevent additional damage. Even though we have detection to notify individuals in the building of a potential hazardous situation, at the time we had no external communications to notify emergency personnel. In short, with no one in the building, no one would have known of a problem until you externally saw smoke or flames.

To begin addressing these areas, five major tasks identified are (no particular order to complete):

Keyless entry

Video Surveillance

Fire Alarm Panel replacement

Connect fire alarm panel for 9-1-1 monitoring

Smoke detection throughout the facility Current Project Status

Fire Alarm Panel Replacement - Simplex Grinnell completed installation October 2017.

Installation of telephone line for 9-1-1 connectivity – Verizon completed installation of telephone line November 2017.

Connect Fire Alarm Panel for 9-1-1 monitoring; Simplex Grinnell completed installation December 2017.

Keyless Entry o Received quote to provide keyless entry

and replace key tumblers for all outside doors ($5,500.00) Keyless entry installed on the two

rear entrance doors. Units are programmable for up to 1000 access codes. All outside door tumblers replaced and keyed with a new master key for emergency use only.

Smoke Detection for entire building o Received quote from Simplex Grinnell to

install smoke detection ($11,775.00) Smoke detection devices in all

classrooms, restrooms, kitchen, CEC, CEC storage rooms, Sanctuary, basement, and boiler room (CO2 detection).

Devices will be zoned within the fire alarm panel so we know from which area the alarm was initiated.

9

When devices are activated, signal is sent thru the fire alarm panel to notify emergency personnel.

Video Surveillance o Received quote for 6 cameras with DVD

unit ($2,000.00) System can be monitored and

administered remotely (PC or iPhone/android).

Recommendation

To provide adequate protection to the best of our ability, for both human concerns and property, we need to implement installation of the keyless entry and smoke detection. The video surveillance is a nice add-on that would help solve an issue, but it would not prevent an issue. For that, reason we will need to have the funds before any installation would happen for video surveillance.

As we have said in the past, it is important to complete these tasks as soon as possible without financing the cost.

Therefore, as cost estimates are obtained, we will fundraise, donations, etc. to meet those costs. Now that we have costs, and an account balance of $5,204.00, the options to move forward to complete Keyless Entry and Smoke Detection by August 31, 2018 are: Option 1: Obtain total cost of $12,071.00 through donations, fundraising by August 1, 2018. Option 2: Obtain total cost of $12,071.00 through donations, fundraising, Memorial Fund by August 1, 2018. Note: Monies borrowed from the Memorial Fund must be replaced unless otherwise noted.

We realize this is an exception to our policy where funds need to be secured before implementing the project. However, where safety is involved, we seriously and prayerfully need to reconsider our position. There is always the argument we did not have these protections in the past, so why now. Sometimes, waiting is too late. As well, it conflicts with our objective of being PROACTIVE to provide a safe environment for worship and fellowship.

We anxiously await and encourage your feedback.

God Bless. Steve Henninger, Hugh Harris, Jerry Hittinger
