We carry out machine familiarisation as part of our handover process. However, we can also provide an expert operator if you just need to focus on the job at hand.

01 691 40081. EN280 STANDARDMEWPs must be CE marked to EN280 to be compliant with European machinery standards. At Height for Hire, all our MEWPs are bought new directly from the manufacturer. As such, compliance with all relevant European specification standards is assured.

2. CERTIFICATE OF THOROUGH EXAMINATIONAll MEWPs in use must have a current 6-month certificate of thorough examination carried out by a competent person. Our service engineers are CAP-certified and receive regular manufacturer training.

3. MEWP CATEGORY TRAININGOperators must hold the correct MEWP category training certificate and operator card. Note that most specialised machines are IPAF 1b, not a common category. It is your responsibility to check if your operators hold the correct MEWP category.

4. MACHINE FAMILIARISATIONIn addition to training, operators need familiarisation on all machines, as makes and models vary. Our drivers are trained to IPAF Demonstrator level to ensure customers are given all the information they need at handover.

5. OPERATOR MANUALSOperator manuals must be available to operators. All our equipment features a QR code that takes operators to an online copy of the relevant manual. A hard copy is also supplied with the machine.

6. OPERATOR WEIGHT/SAFE WORKING LOADOperator weight is crucial, as safe working loads (SWLs) may vary between models and manufacturers. The standard European male is 80kg, but your operator might not be. Always check this before operating.

7. GROUND CONDITIONS/FLOOR WEIGHT RESTRICTIONSWill your client’s ground/floor take the weight of the machine in question? In order to drive the machine into position, the ground or floor must be able to take the travelling weight. Always check ground conditions and floor weight restrictions before bringing the machines on-site.

8. MACHINE POSITIONINGallow enough space for the turning circle of the machine to get around corners and for lowering the outriggers. Extra width is needed when setting up the outriggers as the outrigger operating envelope may be wider than the final set-up footprint of the machine.

9. EMERGENCY LOWERING FROM GROUND CONTROLSOn specialised machines, ground controls for rescue can be complex and ground staff need familiarisation training and practice of emergency lowering. It is the responsibility of the employer to provide this training.

10. RESCUE ARRANGEMENTSIf basket-to-basket rescue is part of your specialised machine emergency planning, be aware that the emergency services may not have the equipment to work at these heights. For basket-to-basket rescue, always use a 2nd lanyard during transfer. Rescue training may be required as well as standard MEWP operator training.

The challenge was finding a way for an access machine to fit through a narrow doorway 2m high and 62cm wide without damaging the door frame or internal wooden floors. Our experienced engineer carefully measured the narrow entrance.

The engineer removed the outrigger footplates from the Hinowa Goldlift 14.70 to reduce the width of the machine and strapped the legs into

the stowed position. He also advised the customer to remove a step to allow for some extra height and he laid polythene to protect the floor surface.

The customer was able to safely work at height inside the old church, without causing any damage or disturbance to the building structure.

A window cleaning company had to clean a glass front on both the inside and outside of a building.

A narrow doorway was the first obstacle facing the cleaning company. The 0.80m wide Hinowa was the ideal machine to enter the building.The articulated boom on the Hinowa allowed the workers to reach up and over the balcony inside the building.

The 22m Denka was hired by a company working on the new roof lights of the Velodrome for the 2012 London Olympics.The simple drive system meant the operator could easily move the machine to his next place of work.

Narrow areas and doorways were easy to negotiate due to the Denka’s compact size of 0.89m wide x 2.1m high. The Denka DL 22N weighs only 2,350kg which made it suitable for the Velodrome’s lightweight floor.

Height for Hire carried out a site survey and provided a specialist operator to drive the Omme 3150 up the slippery grassy bank ensuring minimal damage to the grass, while having sufficient outreach to allow access.

Because Height for Hire sent a specialist operator to install and operate the machine, our customer had minimal set up time and was able to complete the job in the tight timeframe, within budget, causing zero damage to the grass.

Lighting on the roof of an indoor snow centre needed to be repaired and replaced.The articulated FS 320Z provided access to the roof by going up and over a balcony that ran along one side of the centre.

The floor of the centre was sloped but the tracked Spider was able to negotiate this and its non-marking tracks meant the artificial snow wasn’t marked. The extendable jib allowed the operator to easily access those hard-to-reach places up high in the snow centre.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THIS SPIDER LIFT:Narrow, articulated, extendable jib

The Spider FS 330Z was used in one of our own workshops to repair roof lights. Space was limited in the workshop and the Spider had to be set up between other access machines that were parked indoors.

The operator chose the articulated Spider to get up and over a balcony and other obstacles that were in the way.

The jib on the Spider Lift provided additional reach for the operator when working on the roof lights.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THIS SPIDER LIFT:Automatic levelling, ability to negotiate steps, easy to operate

The Teupen 36T Spider Lift is used regularly by a maintenance company responsible for the audio system in a football stadium in London. The Teupen has to climb a narrow set of steps outside the stadium.

The outriggers and automatic levelling system allow the operator to set the Spider up on different levels. This is needed as the Spider is being set up on the steps of the grandstand. The easy-to-use controls with colour coded functions also make the Teupen Leo 36T very user-friendly.
