• Convergence will provide the necessary level of functional redundancy
• DSRC does not currently work with pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.
• DSRC-based V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication) might require significant infrastructure investment
• V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication) requires high market penetration to deliver value reliably
• Cannot sufficiently mimic human senses
• Not cost-effective for mass market adoption

Galileo contribution to: Multiconstellation/Multifrequency
Multi-constellation: When buildings block the signal and reduce the number of visible satellites, the availability of more constellations ensures a much more accurate final position
Multi-frequency increases robustness of the position against jammers, because even if a satellite is not available or providing incorrect data, a reasonable accuracy will be achieved

In addition, Galileo signal authentication will provide trustability against spoofing attempts; this will facilitate the process for a legal use of GNSS position in several regulated road applications:
Safety-critical applications leveraging on precise and secure positioning
to scenarios of potential harm to humans or damage to a system/environment (e.g.: connected or autonomous vehicles, dangerous goods transportation, etc.)
Payment applications, in which GNSS is used to go from vehicle ownership to usage (e.g. road tolling, congestion charging, UBI, MaaS)
Liability applications based on new policies leveraging GNSS (e.g.: speed control, digital tachograph, accident reconstruction, etc.)

Conclusion (1): Industry will demand an embedded robust GNSS engine
(including eCall)
Conclusion (2): Make sure you get all the benefits of satellite navigation technology
Multiple frequency (Galileo - GPS): immediate benefits in terms of accuracy and robustness. Essential for ITS and especially autonomous connected vehicles.
Authentication of the signal (Galileo): to assure that the signal is really coming from the satellites and not spoofed. More and more important payment and safety critical applications
Signal of opportunities and sensor fusion (GNSS + other techniques): users require a seamless transition outdoor/indoor, new techniques are emerging to complement the main GNSS-based positioning. This is essential for all intermodal applications and new “mobility as a service concept”
Very High Accuracy services (Galileo): cm accuracy via corrections transmitted via satellites; now only for professional applications, may become a standard also in ITS. Galileo contribution with its commercial service.
