P R E S I D E N T S R E P O R THello Beef & Australian Shorthorn breeders & enthusiasts I have pleasure in presenting my first Presidents report.

I would like too thank all Members for their support.

Thanks to Marion Spencer for her terrific effort as Society Secretary over many years, congratulations to Dawn Morris for accepting the demanding position of Secretary, lets all support & wish her well in this roll.

Thankyou to David Ashley for the enormous amount of time & effort he has put in to help create the new Web Site.

Thanks also to David Spencer for securing ownership and organising loan of paintings at the Royal Melbourne Show Offices. Thankyou to all of you who continue to positively promote the Beef and Australian Shorthorn breeds, and I wish all breeders success in your various farming enterprises.

Kind regards Graeme Walsh.

Summer Pastures, (1861-1941) J.H. Scheltema

This artist painted, mainly in Victoria in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Within this era, Beef cattle in Australia were mainly of the Beef Shorthorn Breed, accordingly most of his works featured Beef Shorthorns or Beef Shorthorn crosses.

He was undisputedly considered to be the finest painter of Cattle ever in Australia. Although most of his works featured cattle, he painted the occasional work featuring horses or sheep.

Extract from a book of pedigrees in the possession of D&M Spencer. Note generational pedigrees recorded (circa 1905). e book recorded Ayrshire cattle, shorthorn cattle, boars, Clydesdale horses.

e penmanship is thought to be that of LA Fairbairn who traded as LA Fairbairn & Co of Ballan.

after product, the Shorthorn/Wagyu cross. Noel and Joyce also run 30 pure bred shorthorn females which are joined to leading shorthorn bulls to produce 100% pure shorthorn progeny. Recently their 10-month-old weaners topped the sale at Casterton averaging 441kg to a price of $1560.00. Surplus Hereford/shorthorn cross heifers will be sold PTIC on Auction Plus in the Spring.

The Thousand Guineas program now provides an attractive opportunity for Noel and Joyce. It is their intention to breed more of the strawberry roans by

running a red and roan shorthorn bull which will result in the ¾ shorthorn parentage required for the program.

Aside from the cattle, Joyce is passionate about her Australian White – a large white breed of Australian meat sheep which was developed for Australian conditions.

Noel Baulch and Joyce Ussher of ‘Seymour Park’ run 840 prime acres in Victoria’s western district at Heywood, 27 kilometres North of Portland.

The property is highly developed and lies amongst the rolling green hills in an agricultural, pastoral and timber-cutting district. Noel and Joyce have managed the property to increase farm efficiency and productivity – by use of new technology, and understanding, building and managing healthy soil to provide nutritious and fertile pastures.

The cattle operation comprises mainly mixed age strawberry roans, which are own bred on the property. There are 200 breeders and most are Herefords joined to white shorthorn bulls exclusively provided by the Malton stud at Finley. This joining gives their cattle a lift with hybrid vigour and an increase in milk production.

All heifers are mated to full blood Wagyu bulls for calving ease and so as to produce a much sought

2017 ANNUAL REPORTBeef Shorthorn Society of Australia, Tasmaina Branch

It gives me great pleasure to present the Annual Report for 2017. Firstly I would like to congratulate Graeme Walsh on being elected President of the Beef Shorthorn Society of Australia. Graeme is the second Tasmanian to hold this office, Merv Jubb being the first to do so.

Since the last annual meeting two main programmes from the Federal Council have come to fruition.

1. The Thousand Guineas programme with JBS Meats for Shorthorn cattle is up and running.

2. The updating of the Beef Shorthorn website.

This is becoming a reality and is felt by the Federal council as a major push by the Beef Shorthorn Society to be more relevant to its members and a useful tool for its members to use. Putting forward information ie. Show results, cattle for sale, items of interest plus technical article relevant to breeding cattle, etc.

The success of it depends on the members,if we don’t use it, it will not succeed. Federal councillor Justice David Ashley has put a lot of work into this project so it is up to us to make it work.

A highlight of this year I felt was the more acceptance of Shorthorn cattle in the saleyards.Breeders and fatners are looking for shorthorn cattle now. The demand for bulls and breeding females has noticeably increased. It is now up to the breeders to produce and promote the breed to take advantage of this demand. The prices we have received for our cattle has risen dramatically in the last twelve months so lets take advantage of it while we can.

Last meeting we welcomed Rodney Rouse and Rob Smith as members of the society which has increased our numbers to allow us to have a third federal councillor. Our secretary Cindy has been working hard trying to put a together a tour of Tasmania for the

2019 World Shorthorn conference either before or after the conference.

May I wish you all the best for the next year and may we breed and sell more Beef and Australian Shorthorns.

Alec Loane President

HORNED CATTLE AND HEIFER CONSIGNMENTS

Richard Shepherd, Mt Gambier, has advised the Society of a recent conversation with Barry Wilson, JBS livestock buyer, concerning horned cattle.

JBS has no problem accepting horned cattle into its Thousand Guineas program so long as the horns are docked to no longer than ear length, and so long as the docking has healed.

Neale Flanagan, JBS livestock buyer, has advised that heifer lot size must now be 50 head or more.

A NIGHT OF HIGHLIGHTSThere were many highlights to the JBS information session and dinner at Mortlake on 11 May.

The spirit of the night, the first to be held in Victoria, showcasing Thousand Guineas beef cooked to individual requirements, was exceptional.

The overall attendance of 57 was made up of Beef Shorthorn Society members and supporters who had travelled from all over Victoria as well as from South Australia and New South Wales, a considerable number of breeders of Angus and Hereford cattle, and representatives of Shorthorn Beef. It was a particular pleasure to have Noni McDonald, ‘Lochaber’, Mortlake, now in her ninety-second year, amongst those present.

Numbers compared favourably with the numbers who have attended such nights in New South Wales and Queensland.

Graeme Winnell of Shorthorn Beef made a comprehensive presentation. He highlighted the success of the Thousand Guineas program in building a brand trusted by retailers and consumers because of its consistently superior eating quality. The Thousand Guineas brand is regarded as positive, strong and unique. Thousand Guineas beef has acceptance as a premium product both in Australia and North Asia (particularly Singapore). It is reflected by JBS presently offering 5 cents per kilo above the price being offered for Angus.

Graeme also highlighted the point that with the benefits of acceptance and favourable prices come responsibilities. Consistency of supply is a central issue. Supply must keep up with demand.

Hayley Robinson of MSA also made a presentation. She highlighted the ability of every cattle producer to register with MSA, and so obtain key feedback data. This data enables a breeder to know whether their breeding program is on the right track.

Hayley also highlighted MSA benchmarks – at least 3 mm of external fat, a carcase PH of less than 5.71 and an MSA Index of 57.62 or higher. The MSA website explains these matters.

Finally, Hayley said that data obtained for the Thousand Guineas kill has shown that the vast majority of cattle have met the JBS benchmark of at least a marble score 2 after feed. She emphasised that marbling is a combination of genetics and consistent nutrition.

The night was a huge success, but it is surely correct that with benefits come responsibilities. Consistency of supply is certainly a matter requiring the commitment of individual producers. It is not something to be postponed, or put aside as being too difficult. It cannot be left up to everybody else, and it cannot be left just to the big producers.

JBS Australia’s transition from commodity beef processor to branded beef marketer has taken another step in the right direction with the global producer taking home 10 of the 15 beef categories at the Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show Branded Beef awards held in Brisbane last week.

Steve Groom, the company’s Livestock Manager – Northern, said everyone involved in the branded programs should be proud of the medal haul. “As the largest processor of beef in Australia, we can’t afford to get anything wrong”, Mr Groom said.

“Of course livestock procurement, feed-lotting, processing, sales, marketing and logistics teams should be proud of these achievments, but we could not have achieved these results without the exceptional efforts of our livestock producers across the country.

Mr Groom said his livestock buyers maintained ‘farm gate’ relationships with cattle producers to source the most suitable livestock to fit into the company’s brand programs.

“We see this as a partnership. We share information with our suppliers so they maximize their revenue by aligning with our brands. If it wasn’t for the farmers, our feedlots and abattoirs would be a large set of empty cattle yards and sheds’.

The recently launched Thousand Guineas Shorthorn Beef was also a big winner, taking the bronze medal. “We developed the Thousand Guineas Beef brand in conjunction with the two leading Shorthorn cattle societies and some of our key end users”.

Mr. Brendan Tatt (Commercial Manager Beef Northern) said “We had lots of chefs explaining to us that while they enjoyed the consistency and eating quality of Angus beef, they wanted to try something different that had a strong story and unique brand”.

“The Shorthorn societies were critical in establishing the brand and are major partners in the growth and success of Thousand Guineas Shorthorn Beef. Chefs continue to tell us that the brand is strong and has an easy story to tell while also backing up with a superb eating quality”.The Thousand Guineas brand story references the sale of a bull, Comet in 1810 at the Brafferton sale for a world record breaking 1000 guineas that would go on to form the foundation of the Shorthorn breed.

To maximize their success in branded beef marketing JBS has placed in-market specialists in Japan, Korea, the Middle East, the US, Europe and China to better service their customers and also to relay critical market information. They have also recently appointed a domestic focused Business Development Manager who forms downstream relationships with restaurants and help them access the large JBS brand portfolio through their preferred distributor.

“We will continue to evolve our business and brand programs to strategically align the supply capabilities of Australia with consumer demand around the world” Mr. Tatt said.

“We will continue to forge strategically beneficial relationships and establish demand driven beef brand that best positions us to return maximum value to the producers to help ensure the farming community remains economically sustainable well into the future”.

Mr Groom added his team was always looking to expand upon their supply network in order to support the growth of the branded beef business and encouraged producers to contact their nearest JBS buyer in order to find out more about the company’s branded programs.

NOT JUST ANOTHER ANGUS BURGER

The Thousand Guineas onslaught is broadening.

New products are now being targeted at different levels in the consumer chain.

At one level are Shorthorn burgers, recently released into Brisbane’s Jubilee Hotel. A chance to enjoy not just another Angus Burger.

Then there are Shorthorn Shortloins, a new product gracing the upmarket Sofitel Hotel. Moo Moos, Brisbane and Gold Coast, have joined the restaurants offering Thousand Guineas Beef.

JBS advises that Shorthorn cube roll will feature on the menu at the RNA Steakhouse this year. Every breeder needs to buy-in and make this project a long-term winner. Leaving it to everybody else is not an option.

THOUSAND GUINEAS PROGRAM ATTRACTS STOCK FROM AFAR

JBS continues to offer attractive live weight prices for premium shorthorn stock through its Thousand Guineas Program. Last week the first intake of pure Beef Shorthorn Steers entered the JBS Prime City Feedlot at Tabbita NSW all the way from Tasmania.

North Eastern Beef Shorthorns sent 24 Beef Shorthorn Steers to JBS. The 24 Steers were weighed straight off pasture on farm on the 15th June and averaged 390kg. With the popularity of the thousand guineas program JBS was only able to book the 24 head in at the end of July. The steers ranged from 9-14months of age. Sires included North Eastern KLO, Malton Harvey and Dunroan Jazbo.

The 24 steers had a long journey to Prime City. On Tuesday the 11th of July they were collected at Legerwood in North East Tasmania and thanks to those who cared for them and transported them, arrived safely at Prime City on Thursday the 20th of July. At intake on Friday the 21st of July the 24 shorthorn steers Averaged 366kg. The top priced steer was worth $1693.35. The Thousand Guineas Program offered a premium of $4/kg over most weights. This was well above quoted prices at Tasmanian Saleyards in the same week – which were at around $3-3.20/kg.

North Eastern Beef Shorthorns are currently over half way through calving with the 2017 drop of calves. There are a number of sires currently in use. This year the stud welcomes its first drop of calves by Morningtime Malmo. There are also cows currently calving by North Eastern Ronan, Malton Harvey and Malton Digger. As the stud continues to grow, with well over 100 registered females, it’s exciting to see the next drop of calves running around.

THE RETURN OF DEEPDENE

More than 60 years after R W Clark first registered Beef Shorthorns under the prefix ‘Deepdene’, son Daryl and his wife Ann have joined the Society and have had foundation cattle inspected for registration in the Australian Shorthorn Herd Book under the same prefix.

Daryl and Ann farm ‘Rockgrove’, some 5800 acres of gently undulating volcanic country at Darlington in Victoria’s Western District. There they run about 225 shorthorn breeding cattle and 14000 Roseville Park fine to superfine merinos.

Daryl and Ann have farmed at Darlington for the past 22 years. R W Clark farmed at Yea, and later the family farmed at Merino. The cattle are sound, well-structured, long and deep bodied. The cows have ample milking ability.

Kelso, Ingleton, Malton, Gairnshiel and Caskieben sires have been introduced over the years. The turn-off is normally bullocks. Clark cattle regularly top the Camperdown, Vic, sales. The Society welcomes back the Clarks of ‘Deepdene’.

The Shorthorn families have lost a tireless and dedicated servant with the passing of Mr Norm Fry on 07/05/2017. Norm with his wife Lorna, operated the very well known and successful Turramurra Dairy Shorthorn Stud. Born on the

17/03/1930 and living at Warrenbayne most of this life but shifting to Benalla in later years, a man of the land he was passionate about the Dairy Shorthorn breed. He bred and showed many champions at both country and Royal shows which led him to serve both the Benalla A & P Society and the Dairy Shorthorn Association of Australia where he held the position of President.

He was later elevated to life councillor of the Association, and twelve months ago was made a life member of the DSHA, being only one of three to be given this very high honour. He also sat on Stud Beef Victoria as the DSHA representative for a long period of time. He travelled to England keen to get new genetics to be used in Australia and should be credited with bringing in many new AI sires to improve the breed in our country. At his funeral at the Uniting Church in Benalla on 12/05/2017, a large

crowd attended and were told of Norm’s devotion to his family and his community.

Norm was interred in the Moorngag Cemetary in his family plot, not far from his beloved Warrenbayne. He is survived by his wife Lorna and children Max, Jenny, Wendy and their families.

Vale Norm Fry, you will be greatly missed!
