By the time you see this, dearreader, The BEAT’s offices will beshut up for the holidays and thelong Christmas break will be uponus. It is appropriate to look back on
the year now, and see what wehave accomplished and what stillneeds to be done.March, of course, will be
remembered for the massive floodsthat hit the Waterberg. None of uswill soon forget wading knee- oreven thigh-deep in the middle of thestreet, or the striking photos ofbuilders trapped on the roof of abuilding, or the story of BuddhaDlamini, who risked his life to savetrapped people from the floods inBela-Bela. While most areasbounced back fairly quickly afterthe water receded, some of thedamage to roads has still not beenrepaired.Waterberg municipalities did not
have a good 2014. Several topofficials were removed from theirpositions, audit reports were notpromising, and on severaloccasions residents took to thestreets to protest againstcorruption, nepotism and servicedelivery failures. In Mogalakwena, arguments are still ongoing todetermine who the mayor actuallyis, after police invaded themunicipality in November toreinstate the deposed head. The elections in May were free,
fair and peaceful, and the resultscame as a surprise to absolutelyno-one except the ANC, who lost10% of the vote from the 2009election in Gauteng – many saydue to the unpopular e-Tollingsystem.We are experiencing load-
shedding on a level not seen since2008, and Eskom recently releaseda statement warning that evenhigher levels may be possible if acollapse of the entire power grid isto be prevented. On a more positive note, both
Bela-Bela and Modimolle nowboast state-of-the-art new malls, offering residents new and excitingways to spend their hard-earnedcash.And now, it is Christmastime.
Already the shops have filled withtinsel, and Christmas music is thenorm everywhere. As more andmore people go on Decemberholidays and inevitably end up inBela-Bela, the shops and roads willbe ever more crowded. If you are one of those lucky
enough to go on holiday thisDecember, dear reader, pleasehave a care. Drive carefully andsafely and be wary of other drivers, who may not be driving carefully orsafely.Above all, drive sober. Drunk
driving kills. Don’t be a statistic.
A look backat the year For the Christmas
round-up we askedour editor to pick
their favouritePhilosophy Cornerfrom 2014. This iswhat they came up
with.We are all of us lying in the gutter, but some are looking at the stars –Oscar Wilde.Oscar Wilde, arguably the wittiest
man in the history of the world, managed to get some seriouswisdom out there, in among the wittysayings and the pretend-shallowness.The quote above was one of them,
and it’s absolutely true.We are all in the metaphorical
gutter. We live in an imperfect world,of which at any given moment, largeparts are at war.At this moment, as you are reading
this, terrorists are moving to attackthe Iraqi city of Baghdad – terroristsso vicious and extreme that theyhave been disavowed by al-Qaeda(whom you might remember ashaving made a name for themselveson September 11, 2001 by crashingpassenger jets into the World TradeCentre and killing several thousandpeople). In Nigeria, 200 young women are
still missing. In Kenya this weekend, armed
extremists attacked a seaside townand gunned down 50 people.North Korea is effectively a police
state.China’s censorship is so effective
that people my age have no ideawhat the significance of TiananmenSquare is. At least we remember thestudents who died in the Sowetoriots. Twenty-three years later, thedead of Tiananmen Square areunnamed. To this day, nobody is surehow many people died on June 4,1989, when the Chinese armyattacked unarmed civilians withtanks. So yes – the gutter. We are all in
the gutter. Sadly, the world is notkind to those who are looking at thestars. Nelson Mandela wasimprisoned for his dream of a united, free South Africa (and however muchone might argue with his methods, and the methods of the ANC ingeneral, the dream is valid.) MartinLuther King Jr was actually killed forhis dream of freedom and equality forpeople of colour. It can be said, though, that despite
the risks, we have an obligation, tothose who have gone before us, andto those who never look up from themuck beneath their feet, to look up.We have an obligation to try and be
the best we can be, to bring theworld into a better time.Inch by inch, the human race is
crawling out of the gutter. Never haveso many been so prosperous. In thehistory of the world, never has somuch of the human race been atpeace. We’re getting better every day, even
if sometimes we have to be draggedby the hair to see the better world thatwe can have, if only we try.

Mookgophong residents were enraged at the lack of service delivery shown by their municipality, which resulted insewage in the streets. While the municipality was trying to keep abreast of the issue, blocked drains and sewers ledto a river of filth in the street. According to the municipality the problem was due to too-small drain pipes, and wouldhave to wait to be addressed properly in the next budget cycle.
