EFF vows to erectshacks in CBDThe EFF at Bela-Bela says that they willerect as many as 50 shacks on a piece ofland across from the Municipality thisDecember. The land in question is ownedby Forever Resorts.
According to party coordinator NeoMoloko, their plans are due to Extension 8residents being evicted by the Red Ants inJune this year. Moloko says that the EFFplans to erect shacks to accommodate someof those who were left homeless due to thatincident on the piece of land situated in
Justin Steyn Robbertson Road between the Pendleberryresort and the municipal offices.
“Since these evictions, no provision hasbeen made for these people, and only ANCsupporters are now living there,” he said.
The EFF’s convener, Sello Mosweu, saidthat the party wants to make Mayor LucasNhlapo aware of “the problems that he hasmade for these people,” as Mosweu puts it.
“Lucas Nhlapo only cares about SAFA andnot about the interests of the people, especially those he has evicted. We wanthim to sit and look at these people whilethey squat on the grounds near his officewindow,” he said.
The land, however, is the property of theadjacent Forever Resorts, whosemanagement expressed their surprise at theEFF’s intentions.“This is private property that has been
designated for future development of ourresort, and we will not tolerate any form oftrespassing on our land,” said Kobus Tait,Managing Director of Forever Resorts. Hesaid that they plan to monitor the situationcarefully and take all necessary action toprotect their property as well as to ensurethe safety of their customers and staff. The Bela-Bela municipal spokesperson,
Matome Sebelebele, said that the evictions
were implemented as a result of illegalsquatting. He added that the municipalityalso cannot condone the plannedoccupation as the land is privately owned.“The land from which these people were
evicted is intended for developmentpurposes. We will also intervene in this caseas the land in question is privately owned,”he said.Sebelebele has warned that although they
cannot intervene in the situation as itcurrently stands, the municipality would nothesitate to protect residents if a falling-outwere to occur between them and thesquatters.
The EFF at Bela-Bela said that it will erect as many as 50 shacks toaccommodate those who were evicted from their homes in extension 8 earlierthis year. However, the land itself belongs to the adjacent Forever Resorts whosaid that no squatting would be tolerated Photo: Justin Steyn

The chairperson of the CommunityCorrections Forum (CFF) Ntate Ndalahas recommended that offenders whoresist rehabilitation outside prisonshould be sent back behind bars, as theirmisbehaviour proves that they are notready to be back in society.
Ndala said this during a special
Office head Malefane Pholosi. The eventtook place on Wednesday, 25 November atthe cluster’s rural communities of Vaalbank,Mametlhake and Leoding.
Various units in the Department andrepresentatives of different stakeholderdepartments such as the SAPS, local tribaloffices and community-based organizationsfrom Bela-Bela and surrounding areas cametogether to attend the event in order towitness the work done by the Department,
and to conduct their own duties as they visitthe offenders.Ndala said that he was concerned about
the absence of several offenders at the timeof the visit, as these offenders are meant tobe under house arrest during certain hours. The offenders appeared to have left theirhomes before the officials’ visits. Thesevisits are intended to be a surprise, in orderto make it more difficult for offenders toescape not complying with their releaseconditions. He said that the offenders’ absence make it
difficult for the participating departments torender their services, as it is not possible toknow what problems the offenders may befacing after their release.
These challenges includeunemployment, discrimination orstigma, nyaope abuse, and a lack ofidentity documents. The Secretary of the CFF Meisiekind
Mokone asked that the CDS follow upon challenges raised during previousvisits. Some offenders apparently do nothave ID’s simply because they cannotafford to pay for them.In his address, Pholosi quoted former
president Nelson Mandela when he waschallenged by the issues ofovercrowding in prisons. FormerPresident Mandela said that he does notsee himself building more prisons, as hebelieves in reintegration outside prison.
