Our Vision Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries

through worship, discipleship, and mission.

Our Mission REACH, TEACH, and SEND

We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and

missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Worship Services

Break Free Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.

Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.

Connect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Freedom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Welcome to Shalimar UMC

Where Is the Church Thermostat?

Our temperatures in January have really been cold for the Emerald Coast. This Artic Blast really has made me appreciate the warmer temperatures I have taken for granted! One of the most difficult things to do in a church is to find a temperature setting that everyone agrees is just right! Speaking of warm and cold temperatures, where is the Church Thermostat? The Church thermostat is located in a very surprising place. I will tell you where it is in the last paragraph of this article. I would like to invite us to turn the temperature up warmer for our new series…BE OUR GUEST.

Over the first three weeks of January, we have asked our congregation to make more room for God in the New Year through prayer, fasting, and worship. BE OUR GUEST is a continuation and the emphasis expands to make room for others through acts of hospitality. In the coming weeks, we want to “increase” the temperatures of our congregation to becoming more welcoming, inviting, and to even display radical hospitality.

Let us really raise the temperature of WELCOME! In the coming weeks, we will have new first time visitors on our campus. When they arrive, we want them to be noticed and welcomed with incredible hospitality. Let us greet them and listen to how we can help them feel at home. As we greet them, let us learn their names and “go the second mile” for them with anything that might help them have a positive experience at Shalimar UMC!

Also, let us really raise the temperature of our INVITATION! The most important demographic in our congregation each week is first time visitors. How do we increase the number of first time visitors? We have to increase the number of invitations.

How do we increase our number of INVITATIONS? We notice the people in our path each week and we INVITE them to worship. Think about how many people we encounter each week in person, by email, by text, by facebook, etc., and in our normal routine. Our extending invitations to worship has never had so many possibilities and opportunities. As we begin, we do not have to go out of our comfort zone to people we do not know. Let’s begin with the people we already know. There are already people in our path to INVITE. We only need to prayerfully focus on the obvious people God places in our path. Try it! Personal invitations from friends, relatives, acquaintances, and neighbors still are more fruitful than any other method of inviting people to worship.

Or, How to “Do Good” helping those in need without “Doing Them Harm”

How can Shalimar UMC transform and increase the connection it has to our community through its outreach and service projects in a way that creates independent, self-supporting individuals and families freed from a dependency upon the good intentions and gifts of others? In this Winter Discussion Topic, led by Lee Jackson, we will explore the results of 30 plus years of experience, setbacks, and successes of developing economically viable communities in Atlanta, GA by Focused Community Strategies (FCS), and how they might be duplicated in Okaloosa County.

Join us Monday, February 5th, 6:00-7:00 pm for this 6-week discussion in the Family life Center.

Join the Discussion: "Doing Good Well"

Let’s turn up the temperature of WELCOME and INVITATION at Shalimar UMC in 2018! Oh yea. Where is that Church thermostat? Well my answer may surprise you but you have the remote to our church thermostat in your hands. I am not asking you to return it but rather use it. We all set the temperature of our congregation. When we greet someone warmly our church temperature goes up! When we serve a guest the temperature goes up! All in all…when we all are warm and make room for others our church climate is under control! The forecast is for a heat wave in the coming weeks with our new series BE OUR GUEST! Let’s use our remote! It is in our hands!

This is the first of a five part series on Developing Effective Ministry In Genesis 18, Abraham sees strangers approaching their tent. He rolls out the red carpet for them, inviting them to a sumptuous meal of bread and fine meat. In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a parable sometimes called The Judgment of the Nations, in which he will one day sit on his throne and separate all the people like sheep from goats. To those on his right hand, he will say, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom…for I was a stranger, and you welcomed me.” These are only two of many occasions in both the Old and New Testaments in which hospitality is held as an essential value of the faith. Often, hospitality was essential to survival in such a harsh and sparsely populated land. Today, we live in a land of convenience stores, fast food restaurants, and the ubiquitous social media. But hospitality is still an essential value of our faith, and just as essential to our spiritual and emotional well-being. People come to church not only to worship God, but also to experience the sense of connection to other people that is critical for life. Every church I have ever visited has been a friendly church, but not all of them have been welcoming churches. A friendly church is a group of people who are friendly to each other, certainly an important attribute. But a welcoming church welcomes the stranger; its culture is geared toward identifying the visitor and inviting them to make themselves at home. This is not some automatic gesture of friendliness that a robot could do if given enough artificial intelligence. It is a genuine recognition that the stranger is in need of God’s grace as much we are, that we are sojourners on the same spiritual road. The hope is that they will feel at home, and eventually declare this church to be their home. This is not as easy as being a friendly church. Phil Maynard, in his excellent book Shift, recognizes four dimensions of hospitality. This first is Interpersonal hospitality, how we relate to people inside the church that we know. These are our friends, class members, and people sitting in the pews around us. In this dimension, we ask ourselves, “Am I open and gracious to the people I know? Do I make room for differences of opinion and practice forgiveness regularly? Do I exemplify what Jesus said: ‘They will know you are my disciples by the love you have for one another’?” The second dimension is Intentional hospitality. This is how we deal with people inside the church whom we don’t know. You “welcome the stranger among you,” as the Bible says in several places. Do you see the same stranger in the pew ahead of you every week but never introduce yourself? At Wednesday night dinner, do you invite a potential new friend to eat at your table? Are you kind and attentive to the children and youth around you, even if you don’t know them or have

continued children of your own? Do you seek out other people and invite them to your discipleship group? For many, especially those introverts like me, this is a stretch outside our comfort zones. But I can’t find any place in the Bible where we are given a pass because it’s “not our thing.” The third dimension of hospitality has to do with how we treat people we know outside the church. This is Incarnational hospitality. We remember that Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” Do people who know me get a glimpse of Jesus? Am I the walking embodiment of Christ? When people who know you see that you are somehow different, even transformed, they naturally want to be a part of what made you that way. Your caring behavior attracts them to you, even if you don’t explicitly invite them to church. The fourth dimension is Invitational hospitality, how we relate to people we don’t know outside the church. As Philip said to Nathaniel, “Come and see” (John 1:46). We invite people to “come and see,” that is, come inside to witness for themselves what God can do. We do this by advertising and social media, but more importantly, by personal invitation. Studies repeatedly find that between 60-80% of church visitors come because they were personally invited. Have you invited anyone to church lately? Have you invited them to engage in discipleship with you? Have you invited them to some of our community wide events, like Holly Fair, or the Christmas musical? These are fun things to do, and you don’t have to be pushy to extend hospitality in this way. At Shalimar UMC, we are doing many things to take our hospitality to the next level. We offer gift bags to new guests; we offer free coffee and pastries at gathering times; we have greeters at the door and shuttle buses for parking; we have greeting times built into worship; and many more. And while all of these things are good, they do not replace the need for the interpersonal, intentional, incarnational, and invitational hospitality that is up to each of us individually. You are the most vital part of our program to shift our church from a friendly church to a truly welcoming church, just as Christ welcomes us.

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals

Faith Parry, Associate Pastor [email protected]

In Genesis 18:1-8, Abraham met three strangers on the road whom he welcomed into his home with something we're calling Biblical Radical Hospitality. Abraham provided bread, shade, a place to wash up, and fresh meat just for them. What does Abraham's story teach us about hospitality? How might it look today? Read Hebrews 13:2. This passage references Genesis 18 Who is a stranger in your life that you have accepted with open arms? How have you been blessed by the times you have helped welcome or serve

others? Read Romans 15:7 What does it mean to accept people like Christ? Is there someone that you have failed to accept? This week, think of how you can reach out to someone you don't know and share the love of Christ. Be kind to someone. Pay it forward. Invite someone to worship. Invite someone to join you for lunch after church that you don't know. Try something new.
