Shore StandoutsCongratulations are in order...

Senior ERIC O’HARE was recently awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal in recognition of his willingness to voluntarily help others in the community and his achievements in personal develop-ment, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. Way to go, Eric!

Shore’s Sodexho Food Service Manager, CHRIS CALAGUORI, was recently awarded the Sodexho School Services Award of Excellence, along with Janet Surak of the Oceanport School District. The women were recognized for their tireless efforts in supporting the community after the devastation of superstorm Sandy. They opened up the kitchen in Maple Place School to feed hurricane victims who were left with-out homes and forced to stay at the school. Chris and Janet worked 14 hours a day to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner, and prepared over 500 meals a day. They turned no one away. When a Red Cross volun-teer assisting seniors came in looking to feed seniors lunch in about 45 minutes, Chris and Janet put together 50 bags lunches and sent him on his way. The Shore community is grateful for your efforts, kindness and hard work!

Shore’s Iron ChefsBy DANIELLE DEFAZIO

“Iron Chef” is a popular cooking competition show found on the Food Net-work, and just recently, Teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences, Mrs. Dean- Esposi-to, brought the show from the TV into the kitchens of Shore Regional High School. For those who aren’t familiar with the premise, “Iron Chef” is a competitive show where chefs are surprised by a secret ingredient that they must incorporate into all of the dishes that they prepare, including dessert. Here at Shore Regional, 25 teams took on the challenge to compete in the first “Iron Chef”-style competition in this school. In the first round of the competition, all the teams were challenged to create a cookie recipe but with a twist: the recipe had to contain a high-fiber ingredient. Judg-ing was based on taste, appearance, strict kitchen guidelines, difficulty, and cleanliness. Five winning teams moved on to the next round and were presented with the challenge of making a breakfast that met the MyPlate nutritional guidelines. MyPlate is the new replacement for the food pyramid, and whole grains had to be incorporated into the dish. Students had the challenge of not only creating and cooking a healthy and balanced meal, but had to put their creative minds to the test to present the food in an appealing way. It wasn’t until this round when judges, including John Passiones, of Scala’s Pizza, and Edward Esposito, of the Jersey Grill, declared Amanda Morehouse, Elesa-beth Racioppi, and Dan Smith as the winners of the “Iron Chef” competition with their paradise breakfast crepe and carrot mango smoothie. The first place winners were awarded gift certificates to Scala’s. Second place winners were Paula Matsunaga, Taylor Mellaci, Molly O’Neill and Anna Livingston, who made an apricot Gorgonzola bruschetta with eggs. Third place went to Talia Binns, Emily Egan, Jessica Egan and Christine McArdle with their crab and bacon quiche with home fried potatoes. This will not be last Shore Regional will be seeing of “Iron Chef,” as Mrs. Dean-Esposito has plans to continue the competition with new teams and challenges for her International Foods Class.
