Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. According to most Catholic scholars and theologians, the Transfiguration is the culminating point of the Lord’s public life. His Baptism is considered to be the starting point of that public life, and the Ascension is the end. Our Gospel Reading today, which reports this event, is from the Book of Matthew. However, the Transfiguration is also reported in Mark and Luke, and St. Peter makes reference to it in one of his letters, as does St. John.

It is natural that Peter and John would allude to the Transfiguration as they (along with St. James) witnessed it. Jesus took the three Apostles and led them to a “high mountain” where He was transfigured before their eyes. The mountain is never directly identified, but tradition has ascertained it to be Mt. Tabor. Of course, it is not the mountain but what occurred there that is important. Jesus allows the three Apostles who were present (as well as those of us who hear the Word) to view what eternal life in heaven is like. Christ’s divinity is on full display. To use Matthew’s words, “His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light.”

Our First Reading from the Book of Daniel contains almost exactly the same description as that found in the Gospel. The prophet Daniel describes what will occur as follows: “His clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool.” As if that prophecy was not enough, Daniel takes it to the next step by going on to say, “One like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven.” The term Son of Man is one that Jesus was most likely to use in indication of Himself. Seeing it in a prophecy, and especially one which is so clearly the Transfiguration, merely more closely associates Jesus with the Transfiguration which is to come and described so perfectly in the New Testament.

In our Second Reading from St. Peter’s Second Letter the Apostle Peter also alludes to the Transfiguration. Peter writes, “…we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty…when that unique declaration came to him from majestic glory, ‘This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him (Jesus) on the holy mountain.”

The Transfiguration was not a different miracle; it was part of an ongoing miracle. Perhaps the real miracle was that Jesus kept away from displaying His glory most of the time. When the three apostles present became aware of the full divinity of Jesus, it is reported that “They fell prostrate and were very much afraid.” Is that how we react when we become aware of the presence of God? Are we a bit fearful?

Knowing God, appreciating God, embracing God should give us confidence. God’s grace is amazing, and that needs to be our reality. Remember that Jesus is on His way to crucifixion and temporary death. We are on that same path, but the Transfiguration is a reminder to us of the hope we have in the saving grace of the Lord.

Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!

The Mission Cooperative Appeal , 2017 Brother Charles Gresh, who serves with the De La Salle Christian Brothers, will visit our parish and

speak at all Masses next weekend, August 12 and 13.

Each year, the Archdiocese, in conjunction with other archdioceses/dioceses throughout the United States, sponsors a Mission Cooperative Appeal. Missionaries are invited to visit each parish, sharing how they spread the faith to other countries, and asking for our spiritual and financial support. The De La Salle Christian Brothers are an international religious community of men founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle in France in 1691. They commit themselves to working for the good of the economically poor, especially in the area of education. Here in the United States, they run many schools, including La Salle University and Manhattan College. They also do extensive missionary work in

foreign countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Nairobi, the Philippines, Vietnam, Haiti, and the West Indies.

Look for contribution envelopes in the narthex and return them during next week’s second collection; you do not need an

envelope to contribute. Thank you for your generosity.

Partners in Faith

I can be a Catechist, but what if I don’t have answers?

The textbook will probably have answers to most of the questions that would be asked. If not, and you are not sure, you can always say, “I’m not completely sure, but I’ll find out and let you know the next time we meet.” That gives you time to consult with your fellow catechists, one of the priests, or the Director of Religious Education.

Please consider serving God through serving His children and become a Catechist so that we can better partner with our parents in offering faith formation to all. You can bring our faith alive for the children. Materials and support are provided throughout the year. There are several openings on different grade levels.

Contact Kathy Thomas or Mary Ann Korpics in the PREP Office for more information.

R.C.I.A. Our journey begins again in September for those who want to become a Catholic or complete reception of the Sacraments of Initiation if already baptized a Catholic. For more information or questions, contact Kathy Thomas at [email protected] or 610-873-8798.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and in today’s Gospel reading we hear it proclaimed that on Mount Tabor, Peter, James, and John caught a glimpse of Jesus’ divinity strong enough to strike fear into their hearts. The event took place shortly after Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus was, indeed, the Messiah. In today’s second reading from Peter, we hear his personal testimony. This comes from a man who spent more than three years with Jesus. Peter witnessed his humanity. He saw Jesus hungry, tired, and finally, rejected and crucified. But he also saw Jesus feed the 5,000, walk on water, heal the sick, and raise the dead. He saw Jesus in his glory when he was transfigured. He saw Jesus risen from the dead and ascend into heaven with the promise that He is coming again in power and glory. How strong is the stewardship of our own faith? Do we accept Peter’s apostolic witness to Jesus as Christ? Does this testimony help us acknowledge and trust Christ Jesus as our Lord and savior?

The Loaves and Fishes Project With the Loaves and Fishes Project,

giving is as easy as 1-2-3:

• Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-

perishable item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass.

• Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet on your right as you come into church.

• Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team delivers the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, once a year - anytime.

As a church family, we can make a much appreciated contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week.

Please contact Nancy Farrington at [email protected] or 610-620-3619 for more info.

The next King’s Men meeting will take place on Thursday, August 10 at 7:30 PM in the Par ish Meeting Center .

Feed the Hungry: Lend a hand to help Safe Harbor

On the first Friday of every month, St. Joseph parishioners prepare, deliver, and serve dinner to 25 women residents at Safe Harbor in West Chester. Would you like to be part of this fulfilling – and needed – outreach?

We need volunteers to: • Prepare one of the components of the meal – a main

dish, a vegetable, a starch, a salad, and a dessert. • Be part of the team that delivers and serves the meal.

We arrive at Safe Harbor at 4 p.m., serve between 4:30 and 5 p.m., then go home.

If you are interested in volunteering on a rotating schedule or if you would like to learn more, please contact parishioner Elizabeth Sokol at [email protected]

Our next meal day is Friday, September 1. Thank you.
