BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017
The Transfiguration of the Lord Blessed Sacrament August 6, 2017
From The Pastor
Moving forward in the Spirit
It has been 15 months since the publi-cation of Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), Francis’ controversial apostolic exhortation; and the dust is still settling. Four cardinals expressed their “doubts” in writing to the Holy Father. They were concerned that it might create confusion among the laity. Others went so far as to say that it is a break from the traditional teachings of the Church. Most dissenters are still worried about a possible “misuse” of the apostolic exhortation. The bone of contention was not even in the main text but in footnote 351 where Francis implicitly extends the possibility of re-ceiving absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and permission to receive Communion to remarried Catholics under certain circumstances. He says “The confessional should not be a “torture chamber but an encounter with the Lord’s mercy”; and the Eucharist “is not a prize for the perfect, but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak”. This does not offer any blanket permission but sets down certain condi-tions among which are: “humility, discretion and love for the Church and her teaching, in a sincere search for God’s will and a desire to make a more perfect response to it”. But the elephant in the Vatican has been released: Communion for the remarried may sometimes be allowed!
Francis clearly foresaw the danger that this issue would distract from the greater message of the exhor-tation but he rightly asserts that it is not a rupture in the Church’s teaching. The two Synods on the Family have focused on the “crisis of the family” and Francis wants to respond to families whose situation does not match what the Church teaches as ideal. Pope Bene-dict XVI worried about the risk of the Church being too “identified with certain commandments or prohi-bitions” so that “not even a hint of the true greatness of the faith appears”. The response, then, of Francis and the bishops of the Synod was to change the focus of the Church’s teaching on marriage from law to vir-tue. This is the real heart of Amoris Laetitia. Here in chapter four Francis engages in a scriptural and pasto-ral meditation on Chapter 13 of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. The Church’s primary way of pro-claiming the gospel about marriage is not to issue pro-hibitions but to point to the virtuous lives of Chris-
tians who have lived the marital covenant with fideli-ty, gentleness, courage and love.
The bishops were also concerned about the “gap” that exists between Church teaching and the actual marital situation of so many in our time. They feared that it could lead to an exclusive Church, and what Cardinal Walter Kasper called a “practical (or de-facto) schism”. The proposed response is an increase in the Church’s pastoral engagement with families and mar-ried couples through accompaniment, discernment and integration.
As a pastor, it is very liberating to know that we may exercise “pastoral discernment filled with merciful love, which is ever ready to understand, forgive, ac-company, hope, and above all integrate.” Catholics who are in what used to be called “irregular situa-tions” have been given hope to be in fuller commun-ion with the Church. There are, of course, conditions. As St. John Paul II said in Familiaris Consortio (1981) “Pastors … are obliged to exercise careful dis-cernment of situations.” Nevertheless, while remain-ing faithful to Church teaching on the indissolubility of marriage, pastors are now empowered to respond to the particularities of situations.
Wise discernment is greatly needed in our present sit-uations of complexity, ambiguity and chaos. Family life is chaotic. Therefore, Francis now calls for more discernment. This is not individualism but a call to a greater trust in, and sensitivity to, the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This is not easy! Francis observed: “It is like being plunged into the deep and not know-ing what we will find. I myself have frequently expe-rienced this.”
As we move forward into a new more synodal and Spirit-led process we are encouraged to trust because “there is no greater freedom than that of allowing one-self to be guided by the Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last de-tail, and instead letting him enlighten, guide and di-rect us, leading us wherever he wills.”

AROUND TOWN
Daily Prayer for Our Priests
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
