Life MembershipHaving met all the requirements of the By-laws of Ashland Lodge #944 and the re-

quirements of the Grand Lodge, members Coleman E. Payne and James C. Busch

have applied for Life Membership in Ashland Lodge. These requests have been

read on the fl oor of the Lodge in regular session. The secret ballot has been set

for our regular Lodge meeting, Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

Brother Payne will achieve 50 years of membership in the Order on September 9,

2011, having been initiated on September 9, 1961 and brother Busch will achieve

50 years of membership on September 27, 2011 having been initiated on Septem-

ber 27, 1961.

Editor’s CornerI tried something diff erent this issue of the bulletin. If

you are reading this on newsprint, then you will not

notice the change. However, if you are reading this

on-line, you will certainly notice that the online bul-

letin is now sporting color images for many of the

photos, and some of the other incidental artwork.

I have been trying to get this done, and I think I have fi nally succeeded! I hope

you like it. I plan to be adding more and more color as I have time.

Please feel free to send me feedback if you like it, and also if you don’t. I really

would like to hear your opinions on how this bulletin can serve you better...So

far, I’ve only gotten a small handful of comments, so please share your thoughts.

These members missed their winnings by not being

at the Lodge meeting when their name was drawn:

ER’s MessageI want to thank all our members who worked on making the car show a big suc-

cess, just to name a few, Jim Potter, Fred Hatfi eld, Michael Golden, Mike Coomler

and so many more.

Let me tell you a little bit about the grand lodge which was held in Phoenix, Ari-

zona. The weather was hot, hotter, and then it even got hotter, and just to throw

in something else they added for our pleasure a sandstorm. There was a lot of

good information put out, a lot of which I have heard before, but even with that

they were able to put a new twist to the old information. The new grand exalted

ruler seems to be a real nice down to earth type of guy and he stated that he

was looking forward to having a great year, he feels that membership is the most

important thing and as we all know we need new members to keep our Lodge

growing. I am adding the results of the propositions that we have discussed in our

lodge (see right column.) Even though some of the numbers show that a proposi-

tion has passed, you will notice that they have an X because another proposition

has failed, so the one with the X also failed - are you confused yet. It took a little

going over numerous times to fi gure it out. (√ means passed, X means failed)

I do not advise anyone to go to Phoenix, Arizona in July unless you like tem-

peratures in 110 plus range. It was sure nice to come home to some nice Oregon

weather and back to our great Lodge and looking forward to the rest of a great

year.

Fraternally,

Herm Blum, ER

The 365 ClubWhen you received your dues notice you probably have seen that there are sev-

eral optional charities to which you can donate. One of them is the 365 Club. Ever

wonder what that is all about? Well, if you check the box and include an extra

$3.65, (a penny a day), with your dues payment, we will put a foil seal on your

membership card proclaiming you to be a B.P.O.E. “365” ‘er. We then accumulate all

the donations and use them to support handicapped youth from our area.

This year we gave $250.00 each to the Hope Equestrian Center and the Jackson

County Special Olympics Committee.

So, next year, when paying your dues include an extra $3.65 and do something

“special” for our special needs kids.

Cars of Summer 2011Thirty-fi ve proud vintage car owners participated in the Cars of Summer at the Elks

parking lot this year. Breakfast was served by the PER’s. Burgers, dogs, ice cream, old

time soda pop and adult beverages were served by a fi ne group of Volunteers. For the

fi rst time that anyone can remember there was a tie for the People’s Choice award

(1957 Chevrolet and a 1936 Boat tail Auburn). Historically the People’s Choice award

winner is the car displayed on next year’s logo and shirts. So next year we will either

have really big shirts or something on both the front and back or.....?? Speaking of

shirts, there are Cars of Summer 2011 T-shirts available in the bar for only $15.00.

These are a really nice unbleached cotton T-shirt screen printed right here in Ashland.

Elvis Was In The Building!Though summer is usually a slow time for events at the Lodge, we had a successful night of fun, fundraising, food and music when Clint came back to sing on Western Night. Hats and Boots were everywhere to be seen and a crowd enjoyed the food and dancing. We raised more than $600.00 to pay for the dumbwaiter. All in all, a great event for July. Herm would like to express his thanks to everyone who helped out with the event, and to Gary for cooking up some great grub![Editor]

Veterans’ Activities ReportThis Summer and past Spring Ashland Elks have been providing social activities

for our local Veterans.

In addition to the weekly Wednesday get-togethers with the Laurel Pines Lodge

Veterans, we have treated the lady residents at (VA) SORCC to lunch at our lodge,

lunch at the beautifully remodeled Rogue River Lodge, and a jet boat ride on the

Rogue River.

Older permanent gentlemen residents at SORCC enjoyed lunch at Miguel’s in

Shady Cove.

Our lodge also sponsored a beginning of the season planning lunch for the AC-

CESS Community Garden located at SORCC. This garden is cared for by volunteers.

The ladies had a good time at lunch in June with Judy, Berniece, Ellen and Kalie.

It was a happy group and the Veterans remarked how nice everyone was. They

were also impressed with our dining area and view. During the jet boat ride the

gals were in awe of the Rogue River and surroundings. Their gratitude has been

genuine and constant.

Thank you for contributing to the Veterans’ Activity Fund and for your personal

support. I feel fortunate to be able to provide a social network with good life ex-

periences for our friends at (VA) SORCC, White City.

We are helping to create wonderful Southern Oregon memories.

Fred and Melanie, I appreciate you for stepping in to host the ACCESS lunch. Jack

and Ron, thank you for the behind-the-scenes help whenever it is needed, and

Gary, your lunches are exceptional.

A reminder of upcoming events that benefi t our local Veterans.

- November - Holiday Gift Drive for children (all ages) of resident

Veterans at SORCC

- November 5th - Wine & Silent Auction

- December 10th - Veterans’ Holiday Awards Lunch in our dining room - (RSVP)
