    The journey to success involves

    understanding oneself as well as

    understanding the motivations of

others. Everyone is unique comprised ofpersonality characteristics that

    determine their behavior. These

    personality characteristics influence

    internal and external motivation that

are determinants to an individualsability to achieve their goals.

The DISC Model of Human Behavior

provides a simplistic means ofunderstanding four basic temperaments.

These temperaments are influential inpersonal or professional perspectives

    and performance. The DISC

    personality profile provides insight into

why people do what they do and the

information can make a difference in

    building personal or professional

    relationships, enhancing those

    relationships, and conflict avoidance.

Many Are Called but theChosen are Few

Growing up, I have heard sayings such as, Many are called

but the chosen are few and Wide is the gate but few shall

enter. I began to wonder about those chosen few who were

able to enter the gates of success. I defiantly questioned what

made them any different from me. I also wondered what

happened to the called that failed to reach their goals. This

led to my own journey through self-discovery. I eventually

learned that everyone wants to live the abundant life; however,

very few are knowledgeable, willing, or able to participate in

the journey. It takes motivation, preparation, and commitment

in order to attain any desired level of success. Everyone can be

Called to achieve success; however, there are few who are

willing to work towards being successful in reaching their goals.

Personal and professional development prepares the chosen to

succeed as they become equipped to persevere in their pursuits.

What is DISC?DISC is an acronym for the four personality

temperaments described by William Marston in

1928. D is for Dominance, I is for

Influence, S is for Steadiness, and C is for

    Conscientiousness.

    The D Temperament

Those individuals with this temperament have a

tendency to be determined individuals who are self-

motivated to succeed. They are known for their ability

to take charge of any given situation oftentimes

    motivated by power and authority.

    The I Temperament

These optimistic individuals tend to be inspiring

leaders who have an influential impact on others. They

are known for their outgoing and talkative personality.

Their motivations are based on relationships and social

    recognition.

Everyone has strengths that can turn into aweakness when those strengths are abused

DISC Personality ProfileAn effective tool can also be used for personal and

    professional development.

The DISC Personality Profile provides a general description of

why people do what they do. The profile creates awareness of

how individual behavior can affect group dynamics. The lesson

is that everyone is a member of a team, whether as a couple,

family, or organization. The dynamics of the team are based

upon the personality types of its members. Each behavioral

type provides insight into motivating factors that contribute to

the individuals effectiveness in leadership and teambuilding.

The majority of those individuals who are

assessed based on the DISC Model of Human

Behavior are a blend and combination of the

    various characteristics that define these

personality types. The blend of these natural

tendencies coupled with the environment that

cultivates the personality is what causes the

individual to be unique. The DISC assessment

generates a report that produces two graphs:

This is expected of me and This is me.The graphs present a broad generalization of

the individuals personality type to describe the

persons public or personal perspective. They

are generalized representations of how an

their ability to understand a behavioral temperament.

This understanding allows for further comprehension

into how the personality can influence actions and

words. This level of perception empowers one to

develop strong personal and professional relationships

and avoid conflict. This is accomplished by

appreciating that every individual with a particular

temperament has a trigger that may resist the

communication style of another personality type. The

individual who understands this will amend their

approach to the personality type of the other individual

in order to facilitate effective communication.

Recognize Areas for ImprovementRecognition of ones strength is only one part of the

journey to success, another crucial element is the

ability to recognize areas for improvement. This

recognition allows for a balanced perception of oneself.

It is a key component to the process of personal and

    professional development.

    Practical Application for Change

A positive self-image is achieved byacknowledging the positive and negative

characteristics of ones personality and personally

accepting that environmental factors helped to shape

those traits. One must commit to change by

recognizing the need for redirection and personal

    development. This personal commitment involves

controlling ones emotions, perceptions, and actions

through the personal development of weak traits.

The DISC Model of Human Behavior teaches that

no individual has a bad personality, there is only the

underdevelopment of a personality type. The profile is

a means of describing behavior that will help the

individual to understand themself and how to relate to

others. This often leads to the development of a

positive self-image, which is a key factor in success.

The journey to success involves building bridgesthat will get you to the next level in life.

Personal and professional development involves a change process of recognizing ones

shortcomings and transforming them into strengths. Training helps to facilitate the developmentalprocess when individuals alter their counterproductive behavior that interferes with growth. The

DISC Model of Human Behavior provides the foundation for teaching individuals how to

maximize their strengths, minimize their weakness, and appreciate how everyone is unique. The

lesson learned is that the ultimate goal in every relationship is to develop lifelong connections that

will be impactful. The chosen few who learn to use effective communication to build bridges will

be elevated to crossover and enter into the gates of success in
