MAIL-ORDER ANCESTORS: Coat-of-Arms Sales Boom, Irking Experts

They Complain Crests Aren't Legitimate; One Firm Says It Uses 'Some Imagination'

By Stephen J. Sansweet, Staff Reporter of ''The Wall Street Journal" (Reprinted with permission from edition of June 5, 1969)

39

Some years ago, an· enterprising businessman approached Chicago's Crane family. the plumbing . .fixture millionaires, with a sketch for a new family coat of arms. Its shield pictured sink and· bathtub topped by a hand· pulling a toilet chain. Beneath the crest was the motto: 'Apres Met,le Dell:lg6'. The Cranes sent the man packing, says social.critic Cleveland Amory, who stumbled upon the incident. In old England, makers of bogus coats of arms were liable to lose an-ear, .heobserves, adding, ''If we had the same law here, the. one-eared busi.ness-men would make a small army. "

Though few are as outlandish as the phony Crane crest, coats of arms are popping up all over as part of a modern-day heraldry craze. The experts are chagrined. Heraldic and genealogical groups in this country and England charge that status-seeking Americans are being hoodwinked by mail-order heraldry outfits more interested in making a buck than in tracing a legitimate ancestry.

Coats of arms are appearing on walls, blazers, imprinted bank checks, ashtrays and $1,000 diamond-studded rings. One maker of grandfather clocks plans to personalize the clock faces with his customers' arms. In all, one industry source estimates Americans will spend $5 million this year to display their lions 'rampant' or 'couchant'.

Alan Weaver-Hazelton, president of the American Society of Heraldry ,. believes the craze is part of the reaction against the increasing use of numbers for everything. "People turn to coats of arms for a sense of identity, And people of good taste," he sniffs, "don't use a "oat of arms they're not entitled to. "

Only persons who can trace their male lineage back to a forebear who had a coat of B,l'ms registered in Britain are entitled to use those arms, says a herald of the College of Arms in London. But that 'rule' is more often than not honored in the breach.

A case in point: This reporter sent checks to several mail order firms. For $15.45, the Coventry division of Farrington Industries Corp., Elmont, N. Y., provided a cheaply made lithograph depicting two lions and a crown. This was embellished with a shield in the form of a gummed label and with the family name in old English script.

For $18.50, V. H. Tatum, a CinCinnati modeling clay manufacturer-'-turned- "heraldic artist," sent a completely different, hand-painted coat of arms and a description (in French) that traced the Sansweet name back several centuries to Spain and Germany.

The hitch is that the Sansweet name has very little history indeed. It was made up by a U. S. immigration agent in 1902 after a struggle to come up with a rough English equivalent to an.unpronounceable--and now long-forgotten--Russian surname.

In defense, Mitchell Graff, ]:tn'esident of Farrington Industries (which he says will have heraldic sales of $500,000 this year), says: "We don't say you're directly related to the specifiC family coat of arms we send you." And CinCinnati's Mr. Tatum asserts: ''Heraldry isn't controlled by law here, so we have a little more latitude and can use some imagination. "

All this infuriates J. Adolph Bishop, 80, retiren national herald of the National Genealogical Society of Washington. ''Racketeers and swindlers have rniseducated the public into believingthat if your name is Smith, then there's a Smith coat of arms for you. " Actually, adds the peppery Mr, Bishop, he has counted 384 different coats of arms for the name Smith. The odds that John Smith of Podunk Corners would receive his rightful coat of arms (assuming he was legitimately entitled to one) are infiniteSimal, he points out.

MAlkORDER ANCESTORS (continued from page 39)

Mr. Bishop, who turns out a few hundred coats of arms a year in the basemen:; 'rmrkshop of his Chevy Chase, Md., home, has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commi.sslon charging a number of mail-order firms with deceptive advertIsing. A staff attorney for the regulatory agency confirms that two complaints are currently being investigated.

The fuss over heraldry dates back to the 12th century, when warriors used embroidered cloths thrown over their shields so they could be recognized by their own sIde durIng the he:~.t of battle. The practice mushroomed in Europe and got out of hand until, in 148"" the College of Arms was ,formed in London to register all English arms. other countries subsequer>tly set up similar institutions.

Under English law, a coat of arms is the property of the family to wMen it is regi8·~e!'ed. Just last year, Parliament passed two laws attempting to control illegal use of arms. But the courts are hardly drowning in litigation over arms. The last English court test was in 195<1, when .9. theater group was enjoined from using the city of Manchester"s ar'ma, 9nd the on6 be .. fore that was in the 1750's.

Arnold H. Gorsky admits there's a certain amount of snob appeal in modern-dayh8raldry. The 44-year-old former tire dealer is president and majority owner of The Sanson InsW;ute of Heraldry in Boston, probably the largest mail-order firm of the two dozen or so in the coat of arms business.

"Some of the purists complain about us--but that's because we've brought this dowr, to the level of the common people," asserts Mr. Gorsky. Sanson sends a customer the "oldest and most esthetic" coat of arms for his surname--based on his country of ori.g.i.n--and r~akes no claims of genealogical legitimacy.

Sanson has 36 full-time employes, a 300-book library listing blazons (verbp..l des'ni.pcikms in heraldic language) of nearly 500,000 coats of arms and an elaborate mi.crofiJ.m retri.eval system. Mr. Gorsky jealously guards his annual sales figure but says business has tripled in the two and a half years since he took over the firm. "And, II he adds, '~'1e've just scratched the surface."

Sanson successfully fills about 95% of its orders (minimum of $5.95 for a Xerox copy of a coat of arms and descriptive material). It was the only concern to send bRck thIs rep')I"~er'c check, saying it could not find a "Sansweet" coat of arms. However, it offered to create a. new one from a checklist of colors, shapes and designs. Sanson rejects some bu,dness alto·· gether: Hell's Angels, the California motorcycle gang, was turned away with their suggestc)d shield of a skull and winged wheels. "We don't want to associate with people lIke them," snorts Mr. Gorsky.

There is one legitimate way for some status seekers to acquire a brand new ooat of anns. London's College of Arms will grant one for $375. But an Amerioan would first; havet.o sp'md at least $100 to trace his lineage (to prove forebears in his male Hue wene Br't;'sh <3,,:tl]ects) and then provide evidence of his own academic or professional distinctJ.on. '''Wege!; loti> of American customers who come in on the last day of their holiday, just before they fly home," sighs' a college official.

WILLIAMS - BATTLE FAMILIES

by

Mrs. Wilson Hunt, Jr.

Williams

Lewis Williams was in America in 1650. I do not believe he was the immigrant, but I have not been able to prove this. He made several trips in and out of the States faT h8 is listed three times in 'Cavaliers and Pioneers' by Nugant--in 1650, 1662 and in 1664. He re·ceived a land grant in 1667 and 1669. He died in 1669 in Surry Co., Va. He probably ha.d. ~t least three sons:

1. Lewis Williams, who died in Chowan Co., N. C. in 1717. 2. Giles Williams. (Deeds of Chowan Co., N. C. --Lewis Williams to brother Giles and

wife, 1701. Book W, p. 67) 3. William Williams.

William Williams. Guardian accounts of Surry Co., Va., 1662-72: Mr. W. Newsum appears in court and acknowledging to have several things in his possession belonging to Willi.am Williams, orphan of Lewis Williams. Lewis Williams and wife, Mary, are men-tioned on pp. 13, 14 and 15 of this book. In the will of Lewis Williams, who died in Chowan Co., N.C., 1717, he names Anothony and his wife Martha; Grandsons AnothonyWilUa.ms, Charles Sowell, Lewis Johns, and John Pritchex; John Williams, son of William Williams, dec., daughter Prisicilla, and wife Mary. William Williams was in Surry Co., Va. in 1688, 1702 and 1704. He proved his rights in Chowan Co., N. C., 1711, and he made deed to Peter Parker in 1707 for land patented to Lewis Williams in 1669. He was Justice in Chowan Co. , N. C. in 1711.

From the will of Lewis Williams who died in 1717, we know that William Williams had John Williams. John Williams bought land from John Burkett in Chowan Co., N. C. in 1711. John was in Bertie Co., N. C. in 1719. His will is in Bertie Co., N. C. and is dated Mar. 13, 1'741. He had the following children:

James, who died in 1736. Will dated Aug. 31, 1736 names san Ezekiel, daughter F",rebe, and Jerusha, and all my children, Wife Elizabeth, brother Theophelus and Issac.

John, who died in 1722, names brothers Theophelus, James, Issac and Arthur WHli.ams. Issac, Arthur, Theophelus, Ann and Sarah.

Theophelus Williams bought land in Chowan Co., N. C. on July 10, 1742, from .Ta.mes Green (Vol. I, p.21). TheophelusWilliams deeded this same land to his son, Lewis Williams (Vol.l, p.93) Oct. 4, 1756. Theophelus Williams left no will, but from the deed we know that he had the following heirs;

Lewis Williams of Onslow Co., N. C. His will there is dated Dec. 30, 1783 (no. 73). This will named wife, Mary Ann Willimas, daughter Serene Hicks, son Bryan Wimams, daughter Boneta Williams, son Benjamin Williams (the latter two being minors). His wHe, Mary, died 1792 and her will in Onslow Co. (no. 67) mentions daughter Bonita Williams a:nd son Benjamin Williams.

Benjamin Williams gave his age as 74 in the 1850 census of Saline Co., Ark., and si8.ies

that he was born in N. C. He was Justice in Lawrence Co., Ark. 1817-19 (Ark. Terr. papers, p. 805, Vol. 19). He is listed on the 1830 census of Pulaski Co., Ark,. and in SaUne Co. in

OLD NORMAN CEMETERY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, ARKANSAS

I made an excursion up in the Mena mountains in April, 1969 and came home by way of Caddo Gap and Norman. I stopped at the old Norman Cemetery and wrote what was on the only three stones in the grave yard. They are right beside the road. This has been a large graVE- yard, but the only markers are stumps and large rocks. One grave is enclosed in a concrete yard, but no marker on it. This is located in the city of Norman on Highway 8, near the water works.

J, H, Montgomery, born May 10, 1840, died March 14, 1879, M. C., wife of J, H.Montgomery, born June 22, 1841, died Nov. 18, 1908. Elsie V. Daughter of N. M. and 1. E. Montgomery, born March 12, 1900, died July 6, 1900,

WEATHERLY, SMILEY, LAMB CEMETERIES, PHILLIPS COUNTY, ARK.

The Weatherly burial plot is almost a hundred years old. This site was one of my first listings. It was discovered by my oldest grandson while attending cows in a pasture and is now part of the Helena Country Club Golf Green, located on a hill 2.2 miles off Okland on Wire Road. When the Green was under construction, a promise was made that all the stones would be placed flat on the ground so the inscriptions could be read. I do not know if the' promise was kept. This was a family plot near an old homestead site. There were indica .. tions that more graves were there, but these were the only stones, all of white marble.

The Smiley grave lot is located 9.2 miles from plaza on 4th street Road, West Helena. This lot is fenced with wrought iron fence and gate and had been cared for the year of listing (March 12, 1964). The cemetery it was in has been neglected, the ground eroded and stones broken and mixed together so there was no way to put the pieces together. This plot was dis-covered by Dick Cunningham while hunting.

The Lamb Cemetery is another Phillips County landmark that had been completely demolished by pasturing it to cows. At one time it had been fenced and had tall brick posts at. the corners. These had been broken off and the bricks scattered among the trampled and knocked down marble markers. History credits Lamb as firing the cannon that gave the Confederates the signal to start the battle of Helena. After the battle the Federal Army came, burned the smoke house full of meat and turned the livestock into the fields where the crops were grow;-' i,ng. Mr. Lamb took a cold from exposure that day and took to his bed and soon died.

HUTTO FAMILY CEMETERY, GRANT COUNTY, ARKANSAS

Hav;(ng been told my gr-gr-grandfather, Garret or Garralie Taylor, and his Wife, Mary Lee, were burIed in a field east of Grapevine on Hazel Worthen's place and their graves marked with stones, we made a search of this area in late 1968. There are a number of large stones lying.about which probably were grave markers, but semi-wild hogs have just about pushed all of them over and were moving about freely throughout the small cemetery. We were able to make out the following stones:

No---ian Hutto, born January 3, 1873. Died August 3D, 1886. Minnie Hutto. Born November 18, 1881. Died 1887. Jessie Oscar Hutto Delbert Hutto John Elder Hutto Jacob S. Taylor. Co. A. 9th C. S. C. Franklin H. Taylor. Born in Lexington County, S. C. June 12, 1854. Died Aug. 24, 1886. (This grave has small fence around it and tree growing up through middle) Sarah J. wife of John W. lybrand. Born August 8, 1840.

Died April 15, 1881. Aged 41 years.

WI LLSON My other query brought a lot of information on my family and those related to the Will

sons. Since then I've been back to Ben Lomond (Sevier Co. ) several times. Marriage record 2, p. 96, shows James H. Wilson, 50, and Emily F. Pugh, 25, on Oct .. 12, 1864. We thought her maiden name to be Mathews so she must have been married previously. Who was her first husband? Does anyone know anything about her family ?

Probate Book P, p. 82, shows a petition for letters by E. F. Wilson, widow of James H. WHson, who d. June 22, 1888, listing heirs as Symon (who is he ?), Hugh M. (my gr-gr-grandfather), John, Alfred B., daughter Lorina, (all children by Emily) and one daughter, name unknown (could be Hugh M.'s sister, Sarah Jane), and grandchildren Wm. C. Pettigrew (who is he ?), Victoria Wilson, Amelia Lowery (who is she?) and James Wilson.

There are a lot of new names we know nothing about. We thought he had been married three times, but can only prove two. James Harvey Willson m. Jane Seyrnoure in Canada or New York, had three children: Benjamin Seymore Willson, Aug. 5, 1830; Hugh McGregor Willson, June 14, 1831 (b. Canada); and Sarah Jane Willson, Apr. 14, 1832. He was thought to have married a widow Jones in La. with three children, James, Hiram and Victoria, but perhaps James, Hiram and Victoria are his grandchildren. Will appreciate any help.

WOOD Where are the graves of William Wood, Sr., b. 1779, N. C. and wife, Harriett, b. 1788,

N. C., living in Izard Co., Ark. and listed in the 1850 census. By 1860, Harriett Wood was living. in home of a son, Squire Wood. By 1880 eVidently both Harriett and Squire were dead, as all of the children of Squire were listed living with his oldest son, James Wood. William Wood, Jr., son of William and Harriett, and his wife, Sarah Benbrook, were buried in Spring Creek Cemetery. However, the date of death given as Jan. 12, 1872, on the stone of Wm., Jr., is incorrect as they had two children born after this date. Would greatly appreciate data on graves of Wm., Sr. and Harriett Wood. Could they be buried in a farm cemetery?
