What is a Full Classic® Car? A Full Classic® as defined by the Classic Car Club of America is a “fine” or “distinctive” auto-mobile, American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. Generally a CCCA Classic was high priced when new and was built in limited quantities. Other factors including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories such as power brakes, power clutch, and automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car is considered to be a “Full Clas-sic®”. The complete list of recognized classics may be obtained from the Classic Car Club. of America, P.O. Box 346160, Chi-cago, IL 60634.

A Message from Region Director Gary Capra

Hello, fellow classic car enthusiasts – happy holi-days to you all! Wow, what a great fall we’ve had, filled with exciting car activities. Several of us “brushed up” on our painting technique (sorry about that!) at Vintage Iron. Then we had the usual great get-together of many of our members at the Annual Meeting. And finally we had one of the most fasci-nating garage tours ever at Alan Travis’s. You’ll find photos from all these wonderful events in the next few pages. As they say on late-night TV ads, “But wait, there’s more!” Our spring schedule is packed with exciting events too. Of course, there’s all the Janu-ary auction week activities: the 3rd Annual Arizona Concours (get your tickets now!), the annual Auc-tion Breakfast where we welcome some of our members from other Regions, and of course the auc-tions themselves. The previews seem to be leaning more toward 1950’s-70’s cars so classics might be bargains. So far, Alvis, Aston Martin, Bugatti, Chrysler, Duesenberg, Lincoln, Mercer and Rolls Royce, among others, are represented in our cate-gory of choice. In February we’ll have our annual Classics Under The Sun at The Pavilions, and a Poker Rally now being planned by myself and Ken Dennison. Ladies, don’t let your husband/significant other miss out on the Olive Mill Tour in March, and in April we’ll see the return of the Great Steak Burn (Fry). The season will close with another great overnighter to southern Arizona, touring Bisbee and Tombstone. Well, it’s that cheery time of year when we get together with friends and family… and eat too much. And while we’re sitting on the couch after that turkey or ham, watching football or listening to Christmas carols, why not get out your checkbook

and send in your CCCA dues. Remember that the dues now go to National, but don’t forget to check the box for Arizona Region and add that extra $35 so you can participate in the above activities. If you’ve lost the dues form, you can find it online at classiccarclub.org and “Click Here to Renew”. Once again, have a wonderful holiday season…I look forward to seeing you all again in the new year. All the best, Gary Capra

Arizona car show to start 2016 concours season

The Arizona Concours will again serve as the signature event to commence the famed Arizona Collector Car Auction Week in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. The Concours is held on the land-scaped inner lawns of the historic Arizona Bilt-more Hotel, providing an intimate setting during the typically warm and sunny winter season. The Arizona Concours d’Elegance benefits Make-A-Wish Arizona, the founding chapter of the national organization that grants wishes for children facing life-threatening medical condi-tions. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - January 24, 2016 Arizona Biltmore Hotel

EARLY NEWSLETTER ARRIVAL!

In case you’re wondering why this issue of the newsletter arrived a bit early this year: the

date of the former November-December issue has been changed to October-November from now on. This allows Gary Capra (who has the

task every issue of picking it up from the printer, inserting it in an envelope, and taking

it to the post office for mailing) to enjoy his Christmas holiday in relative peace.

Thanks, Gary!

New Member Profile:

Mark Scalpone

Introduction by Ed Winkler

The first seeds for Mark Scalpone’s career in the automotive mechanical and restoration field were planted when he was a young teenager growing up in Illinois. It was there that he started working on lawn mowers and from that progressed to working on cars for various family members. Mark relocated from Illinois to Arizona in 1995 and continued working as a mechanic with several large national automotive repair companies. In January 2004, with about 30 years of automo-tive repair and restoration experience under his belt, Mark started Vintage Iron & Restoration in the east valley. Two years later he relocated his shop to a larger facility in the Scottsdale airpark area. And finally about four years ago Mark again relocated Vintage Iron to a larger 13,000 square foot facility where they are still doing business to-day. Mark is married to his wife Sachiko and they have 2 sons and 5 grandchildren. In his spare time (not that there is much of it), Mark enjoys working on his personal restoration projects as well as doing metalwork and making unique trophies for various car events.

The Arizona Region is continuing to grow and flourish. We do continue to lose our elderly mem-bership, mostly due to age-related problems, but our loyal Region members have brought new members into the CCCA and the Arizona Region. We fin-ished 2015 with 80 members; that was our goal, and the Board is very proud of our continued growth. If you know of anyone who is interested in our classic cars, please invite them to attend an event and join the Region.

————————————————————-

Please meet Mark Scalpone, our newest mem-ber. If you have been associated with the Arizona Concours or the Copperstate 1000 you probably al-ready know of Mark’s great contributions to both of these Arizona-based events.

Tech Session: A Visit to Vintage Iron

Photos by John Ossenfort & Ed Winkler

The Region’s first event for the fall was designed to get our cars cleaned up and out on the road. On October 17th, we visited the Vintage Iron auto shop in Scottsdale. Thanks to our newest member Mark Scarpone (see page 5), we had the opportunity to see how the pros clean up a neglected paint job. We received lots of “how-to” and “how-not-to” tips from the experts, and the pros and cons of different types of paint. In addition to the tech session proper, we wan-dered around some interesting cars, ranging from a 1940’s Hudson to 1980’s Corvettes, in various stages of refurbishment and reconstruction. The cover was pulled off Ed Winkler’s latest acquisi-tion, a 1932 Ford roadster (n/c) in classic 1950’s hot rod style—right off the cover of the old “Rod & Custom” digest-size magazine. Vintage Iron kindly ordered in pizza and Cokes to get us back on our feet after touring the shop.

Annual Regional Meeting

Photos By John Ossenfort

The Arizona Region’s regular Annual Meeting was held at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club on November 15th. This event brings out a lot of the members, as it gives them a chance to see old friends after the summer recess. Some 50 Arizona Region members attended, as did special guest CCCA Executive Director Jay Quail and his wife Dena. Our own Director Gary Capra was absent due to a sudden illness, but Assistant Director Dale Lillard filled in ably. The usual business reports were read and the Region is in good shape as regards both membership and finances. Dale announced that the Region will be sponsoring another Arizona CARa-van in October 2017 and jobs are available. Sev-eral new people (and some old ones) were elected to our Board, although the Executive Committee remained the same—see page 2 for the list. The highlight of the meeting was undoubtedly the remarks by Jay Quail. He gave us an update on re-cent and upcoming changes at National, and de-scribed some of the challenges that we face. Inter-estingly, he said that the long-feared decrease in membership due to increasing membership age has not happened. We do lose many older members but these are being balanced by an increase in new younger members. Thanks again to Sharon Briskman for her usual superb organization in planning this great event. Even the light rain this year didn’t spoil it.

Top & Middle: Checking out the cars before the meeting is always an enjoyable part of the event. Above: Harry Clark now owns this lovely green 1941 Packard 160 Coupe, which we believe was formerly owned by the late and much-missed former editor Les Jackson.

Alan Travis Garage Tour

Photos By Ed Winkler, Ken Dennison

& Lisa Capra

On November 29th, still full of turkey, some 15 Arizona Region members had the great privilege of touring Alan Travis’s garage/museum. Alan leans toward earlier cars than our usual interest, but his examples of 1915 and earlier cars and memorabilia is first-rate to say the least. Alan himself is a fascinating character. He does-n’t just collect, he drives, especially in long-distance runs. He has competed in the Great Race across the United States 15 times, and has won it twice. He drove his 1907 Renault in the 2012 Great Race and finished, then won the Director’s Choice award with the same car at the 2014 Arizona Con-cours. He has driven in the London-Brighton run for pre-1905 cars. He also collects 1915 and earlier motorcycles, and rides them in the 3300-mile coast-to –coast Cannonball rally. He even has one motor-cycle that runs on kerosene. Not restricting himself to road vehicles, his col-lection includes early bicycles, period clothing, books, Edison wax cylinders, photos...practically anything from the horseless carriage/Edwardian era. The approximately 20 cars and motorcycles that were on display ranged from 1898 to 1916. Alan knows the complete history of each: how it was made, who its previous owners were, subse-quent history. He restores all his vehicles to origi-nal condition. One of the highlights of the tour was the playing of a wax Edison cylinder entitled “How To Drive A Car” and narrated by Mark Twain. Alan also owns a 1912 Pierce Arrow motorcycle, seen at the 2015 Arizona Concours, that is on loan to the Smith-sonian. His 1907 Stevens-Duryea Model U was once owned by Winston Rockefeller. His rarest car, a one of one 1916 Scripps-Booth Vitesse speedster, boasts a hemi-head ohv V8 engine which was the

first V8 ever built in Detroit. As a final surprise, the car was built by Lisa Capra’s great grand-uncle, James Scripps Booth. All the attendees agreed that this was one of the most fascinating garage tours we have ever had. Many thanks to Alan Travis, and to Ken Dennison for arranging this great event.

TECH TIPS

ALIGNING YOUR FRONT WHEELS BY YOURSELF

Here's a tip I learned at a car show from a fellow lonely car nut. To align the front wheels by yourself, all you need is a ruler, tape meas-ure, and some modeling clay. Put the car on a flat level surface. Put the clay in the inner groove of the tire at its forward-most position, approximately 4" from the ground depending on the size of your tire. Whatever height meas-urement you use, take the measurement pre-cisely and match it precisely on the other tire. Now, put the tang from the tape measure into the clay in the groove. This keeps the tape measure from popping out as you extend the tape measure. Measure across to the inside of the other tire's first inner groove, at the precise same height used for the first tire. Adjust as per manual and remeasure until you got it where you want it. Or buy your spouse/friend something nice for Christmas and use them instead of the clay. from Robert Guinness, LBCarCo Tech Tips, 6/2/14
